At Sharjah, October 22

At Sharjah, October 22. West Indies won by 11 runs. Toss: Pakistan. Put in, West Indies were given another fine start by Greenidge and Haynes, who raced to 50 in ten overs with Haynes, when 11, becoming the second batsman after I. V. A. Richards to score 5,000 runs in one-day internationals. After the openers and Richardson had gone, Hooper (71 balls) and Arthurton added 67 for the fourth wicket. Earlier in the week Pakistan had averaged 5.88 an over against West Indies. Now, needing 4.72, their batsmen were made to graft in intense heat against an unremitting attack. Miandad needed 74 balls to reach 50, hitting just one boundary, and Pakistan came to the last ten overs needing 64 with five wickets in hand. Ambrose bowled Miandad in the 44th over, and 192 for six quickly became 202 for eight when Yousuf failed to steal a single and Wasim was also bowled by Ambrose. When Patterson bowled Manzoor, the last pair, Qadir and Tauseef, had to score 18 from Bishop's final over. It was too much - as was the heat for umpire Bird, who left the field during Pakistan's innings, suffering from dehydration. He was replaced by Fareed Malik, a local umpire, who stood as square-leg umpire for the remainder of the match.
Man of the Match: C. E. L. Ambrose.
