BRIDGETOWN, Cana: JAMAICAN fast bowler Franklyn Rose took the
most wickets and topped the bowling averages in the 1997 Red
Stripe Cup cricket championship which ended last Monday.
Rose, 25, captured a season-high 45 wickets in eight matches at
a miserly average of 15.42 each. His best bowling performance
was a first innings haul of six for 63 against the Leeward
Islands in the sixth round when he also captured five for 36 in
the second innings.
Experienced Guyana opening batsman Clayton Lambert topped the
batting averages (64.85) after scoring 454 runs in four games
after three of his team's matches were rained out.
The left-hander hit two centuries in the competition - 145 in
the opening round game against champions Barbados and 159
against Trinidad and Tobago in a seventh round.
Barbados' middle order batsman Floyd Reifer had the highest
aggregate, scoring 756 in the 10-round championship at an
average of 44.47 to erase Brian Lara's previous record of 715
runs which was achieved in five games.
Reifer, a 24-year-old left-hander started the season with an
unbeaten 151 against Guyana and made a career-best 200 against
the Windward Islands in the ninth series.
