Boland, thanks to a maiden first-class hundred from Willem Smith and 67 from Henry Davids, put pressure on Gauteng by taking a first-innings lead and then restricting their opponents to 73 for 4 at the close of play. A good platform for Boland was wasted at the bottom end of the innings when five wickets fell for 49 in the space of 14 overs.

Easterns took the initative, and first place in the table, at Centurion as they bowled Northerns out for 183 to take a 123-run lead into the second innings. Losing three quick wickets spoiled a near-perfect day, and they closed on 58 for 3. For Northerns, four batsmen got good starts but could not convert them into big scores. Brendon Reddy, with three wickets, was the pick of the Easterns bowlers.
