South Africa Squad For India Tour
The South African selectors have named the 14 players who did
duty in the recent 4 Nations tournament in Kenya as the squad for
the first phase of South Africa`s forthcoming tour to India.
The tour can be divided into two phases: The triangular one day
series against Australia and India and then a sequence of test
and first class games.
Several key South African players - notably Craig Matthews, Paul
Adams and Shaun Pollock - are injured and will not be in fit in
time for the one day games. Convenor of the selectors Peter Pollock has said that there could well be changes or additions to
the squad before the test series starts.
Gary Kirsten has been named as vice-captain in place of the injured Matthews.
A notable omission from the squad is a back up for wicket keeper
Dave Richardson. Apparently the selectors and Richardson himself
are happy for him to play every match. An unnamed keeper is on
standby to be flown out to India (an eight hour flight) if necessary.
Squad:
Hansie Cronje (captain), Gary Kirsten (vice captain), Andrew Hudson, Darryl Cullinan, Jonty Rhodes, Herschelle Gibbs, Brian
McMillan, Dave Richardson, Derek Crookes, Pat Symcox, Nicky Boje,
Lance Klusener, Fanie de Villiers, Alan Donald
