Sri Lanka among ten countries at mini World Cup cricket
Thirty junior cricketers have been picked for practices from
which the final 14 will be picked for the mini World Cup (under
15) cricket tournament to be played in England from August 6 to
20.
Ten countries are participating in the mini World Cup and they
will be put into two groups.
Group ``A``: West Indies, Zimbabwe, Canada, India and England.
Group ``B``: South Africa, Sri Lanka, Holland, Pakistan and Australia.
Sri Lanka`s squad of 30 players were picked after the Schools
Cricket Association played 20 matches at a district level on a
league basis. These matches were outside the normal under 15
tournament matches.
The Schools Cricket Association also had three trial matches and
two more trial matches will be played tomorrow and on Tuesday.
Once the selectors of the Schools Cricket Association pick the
final squad of 14 players, they will be put through a rigorous
test in seven matches against the top under 17 schools teams.
The final squad of 14 will also travel to Radella to play a match
or two to get acclimatised to the cold conditions.
The final squad of 14 cricketers too will be at a residential
training camp before they leave for England.
The Schools Cricket Association have already written to the organisers of the Mini World Cup to arrange two practice matches
for the Sri Lanka squad before the tournament begins.
After the tournament starts on August 6 where the teams will play
in their group, the semi-finals will be on August 15 at Trent
Bridge and August 17 at Headingly, while the final will be on August 20 at Lord`s.
