Francis to stand in World Cup
K. T. Francis has been nominated by the Board of Control for Cricket
in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) as Sri Lanka's nominee for the World Cup panel of
umpires.
The twelve-member panel comprises two umpires from England and one
each from the other eight Test-playing nations.
The ICC however have included South African Dave Orchard and New
Zealand's Doug Cowie as special invitees to the panel.
The Australian Cricket Board have yet to name their nominee for the
panel.
The World Cup panel of umpires: David Shepherd and Peter Willey (both
England), Srini Venkatraghavan (India), Steve Dunne (New Zealand),
Javed Akhtar (Pakistan), Rudi Koertzen (South Africa), K. T. Francis
(Sri Lanka), Steve Bucknor (West Indies), Ian Robinson (Zimbabwe),
Dave Orchard (South Africa), Doug Cowie (New Zealand).
Three umpires from the associate-member countries who are
participating in the World Cup were also named: Sailat Hossain
(Bangladesh), Subash Modi (Kenya), William Smith (Scotland).
The World Cup commences in England on May 14 and involves 42 matches.
The final is scheduled for June 20.
Manuel for Dhaka
Sri Lanka's second umpire in the International Cricket Council (ICC)
panel - Peter Manuel will officiate in the one-day triangular series
in Dhaka, Bangladesh from March 19.
V. K. Ramaswamy from India and Javed Akhtar from Pakistan are the
other independent umpires officiating in the tournament.
The double-legged tri series (all day/night) matches involves
Bangladesh, Kenya and Zimbabwe.
Vidyaloka Meepawala clash today

The Battle of the Favourites of Galle, the annual cricket encounter
between Vidyaloka College, Galle vs Meepawala Amarasooriya College,
Akmeemana will be played for the second successive year today and
tomorrow at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
This newly introduced big match in Galle is aimed at popularising
cricket in rural schools under a special cricket promotion program
launched by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka in
association with the Galle District Cricket Association.
During this year's school cricket season, Meepawala Amarasooriya team
played 11 matches and drew ten. They beat Kataragama MV.
Vidyaloka College played 9 matches recording one victory against
Galagedera MV and 3 defeats.
However as the teams are packed with more experienced players than the
previous year, Galle cricket fans expect a very keenly contested match
this year.
N. G. Paubudu Manjula captains the Meepawala Amarasooriya team while
Harsha Ravindra leads the Vidyaloka team.
