By Ivan Corea
Cricket is full of the unexpected, the visiting Thomian cricket
team came in for a shock when they found that they will be
facing a Sri Lankan cricketer playing for the top English public
school - Haberdasher's Askers School in Borehamwood,
Hertfordshire.
The Sri Lankan cricketer in question is 15-year-old Asantha
Jayaweera, son of the distinguished cricketer and ex-Royal
Captain, Asitha Jayaweera. Asantha is a left-arm bowler and has
played for the Hertfordshire and Middlesex County. Haberdasher's
Askers school has a good tradition of sports - the school also
is in the top ten where GCSE and A level examination results are
concerned. There are two Asians who play for the 1st XI cricket
team.
The Thomians will face the bowling of this young Sri Lankan who
is doing so well within the sphere of cricket. His father,
Asitha Jayaweera, had high praise for the present Thomian
cricket team stating in his opinion it was one of the best teams
to come out of South Asia.
