England fast bowler, Stuart Broad's six wickets in the in the first innings proved decisive and helped his side beat India convincingly by an innings and 54 runs in the fourth Test that ended at Old Trafford on Saturday.
MS Dhoni, India's captain, won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch that had bounce on offer. The move backfired and England's new-ball attack of James Anderson and Broad ripped through India's top order.
The tourists were tottering at a score of 8 for 4 in the first six overs. Both fast bowlers had taken two wickets a piece and had Murali Vijay, Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli back in the pavilion.
Dhoni and Ajinkya Rahane braved it out for a 54-run, fifth-wicket partnership and then later R Ashwin joined his captain for a 66-run seventh-wicket stand. But India managed just 152 runs in their first innings.
England's batsmen put on a better show than their opponents and managed to take the lead, which stretched to 215 thanks to fifties from Joe Root and Jos Buttler.
After a poor first outing, India would have hoped for a better performance with the bat in the second innings, but they lost wickets regularly again.
England were able to secure a three-day victory - their first over India since 1967 at Edgbaston - without the services of Broad in India's second innings, after he had been forced to retire hurt due to a blow to the face from a Varun Aaron bouncer which squeezed between his grille and helmet.
England's captain, Alastair Cook, said he couldn't have asked for a better display from his side.
"You don't often get nine wickets in a session. The buzz was fantastic. We didn't think we'd get it done but it's great to do it today. Jimmy hasn't been very well, so for him to bowl like he did, and not having Stuart, was a great effort," Cook said.
