Shaun Tait has been ruled out of South Australia's Pura Cup match against Queensland after being diagnosed with tendinosis of his left hamstring. He was forced to leave the field after pulling up sore during his fifth over of the Ford Ranger Cup match between the two sides on Wednesday.
Tait was sent for an MRI scan to assess the seriousness of the problem and his fitness will be reviewed next week ahead of the FR Cup match against Victoria on December 23. The injury will do nothing to help him gain a place in the Australia side this summer after he was named in the 13-man squads for the first two Tests against England.
And if Jimmy Maher's amateur diagnosis is correct, Tait could spend more than a few days on the sidelines. Maher said the injury looked the same as the one that has kept Shane Watson out of cricket for four weeks.
"They did look quite similar," Maher told AAP. "It's probably the same injury, hopefully he gets back on the park, you don't want to wish anyone a long period out of the game. I don't know the extent of it but hopefully it's not too bad and he can get back to bowling, because he bowls a heavy ball and can't be too far from Australian selection either."
Ryan Harris, the allrounder who struck a final-ball six to win the match against Queensland, has been drafted into the Pura Cup squad to cover for Tait.
South Australia squad Matthew Elliott, Daniel Harris, Mark Cosgrove, Callum Ferguson, Cameron Borgas, Darren Lehmann (capt), Shane Deitz (wk), Ryan Harris, Jason Gillespie, Dan Cullen, Cullen Bailey, Paul Rofe.
Queensland squad Jimmy Maher (capt), Lachlan Stevens, Martin Love, Shane Watson, Clinton Perren, Craig Philipson, James Hopes, Chris Hartley (wk), Andrew Bichel, Daniel Doran, Ashley Noffke, Nathan Rimmington.
