Marcus Trescothick has had a foot operation but is expected to resume training before Christmas. Trescothick required a repair to a tendon and the removal of a bone spur from the fifth metatarsal of his left foot.
He had been troubled by the injury during the domestic season, although that didn't prevent him from scoring 1315 runs as he lifted Somerset into the top division. "I was struggling with the injury throughout the summer," he told the BBC. "Hopefully this will resolve the problem."
Trescothick lost his central contract after he opted out of England's winter tours because of a stress-related illness, but he has been useful to Somerset, and in the winter too, as he has been acting as mentor for young players in the county.
His services for Somerset have been rewarded with a benefit year, while his England career remains on hold. He has not played an international match since last December.
