Yorkshire are hoping to sign West Indies paceman Tino Best for the early part of the season to replace New Zealand fast-bowler Daryl Tuffey, who has broken his hand.
Best has played 14 Tests, taking 28 wickets at 48.67, as his impressive pace was blighted by a lack of control and a suspect temperament. It makes a contrast to the more sedate Tuffey, who himself was only lined-up to replace Australian Ryan Harris for the early part of the season while Harris was at the IPL. However, Harris looks set to be in the Australian squad for their five-match ODI series against England in June their series against Pakistan, hosted in England in July.
It left Yorkshire needing an experienced fast bowler following Matthew Hoggard's move to Leicestershire. Best impressed on Yorkshire's tour of Barbados, and Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire's director of cricket, hopes to bring him to Headingley.
"He bowled really well, and we're hoping we can get him over" Moxon told BBC Sport. "We thought it would be sensible to have a look at him in a match against Lancashire and he bowled really well. He bowled fast and in good areas for 14 overs and 1-12 were his figures. So we're hoping we can get him for April at least. But until we get all the paperwork from the West Indies board and the ECB then we can't announce it as a done deal."
Tuffey was due to arrive at Headingley for his first stint in county cricket but he will now miss six weeks of the season after breaking his hand in the first Test against Australia. It's frustrating for Yorkshire but Moxon hasn't ruled out his chances for later in the season.
"Tuffey is a big blow because it's happened so close to the start of the season," he said. "But we've got to take it on the chin. It is frustrating but we have a plan. Hopefully, we've got Tino coming over for April, and then we'll assess during April where we go for the rest of the summer."
