ZTBL in trouble against PIA

Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) faced the prospect of follow-on after a dismal batting display in their Quaid-Azam Trophy Group-IV match against PIA at Rawalpindi Stadium on Friday.

After PIA had put on an imposing 400 after being 242 for five overnight, ZTBL were 90 for seven at the close of second's play, still needing another 161 runs to avoid follow-on.

PIA were helped in their run spree by an almost run-a-ball hundred by Shoaib Malik and a 73-run knock by Bazid Khan. Shoaib batted with authority in getting to the three figure mark and struck 12 fours and a six in a 149-minute stay at the crease.

Other wickets went to Mubashir Nazir, who claimed four for 74 with Fahad Masood picking up three for 96.

ZTBL made a start they would quickly want to forget, and were four down with just 22 runs on the board.

Pacemen Umar Gul and Stephen John shared four wickets while Najaf Shah, Asif Mujtaba and Shoaib Malik took one each to bowl their side into a strong position. Meanwhile KRL maintained their ascendancy against Karachi Blues and put on 396 after resuming at 145 for four.

Thanks to an innings of 144 by Misbah-ul-Haq, KRL gained a lead of 281 on their home ground. Karachi Blues had managed to score only 115 on the first day.

Misbah was in a punishing mood and hammered 15 boundaries and four sixes in a 182-ball knock that took him 221 minutes. Also among the runs was Yasir Arafat who cracked 51 punctuated with seven hits to the ropes. But KRL continued to pile on the agony, reducing Karachi Blues to 46 for two when play ended for the day.
