WEST INDIES v SOUTH AFRICA 1991-92

At Kingston, Jamaica, April 7. West Indies won by 107 runs. Toss: South Africa. Destructive hitting by Simmons, whose 122 came off only 113 balls, propelled West Indies to their highest one-day total at Sabina Park. Simmons took advantage of a bare pitch and short straight boundaries to hit through the line, all his five sixes coming in an arc between long-on and deep extra cover. One, off Henry, led a five-minute delay when the ball landed outside the ground and was stolen but then recovered by police.

South Africa were briefly in contention after progressing to 79 for one by the 20th over, but the loss of Hudson and Kirsten in successive Patterson overs proved decisive. The West Indian bowling, mean and just short of a length, was in contrast to South Africa's, which was innocuous and ill-directed. The West Indian captain Richardson was booed throughout by the crowd protesting against the omission of the Jamaican Jeffrey Dujon from the World Cup squad.

Man of the Match: P. V. Simmons.
