Second Test

PAKISTAN v SRI LANKA 1991-92

At Gujranwala, December 20, 21, 22, 24, 25. Drawn. Toss: Sri Lanka. Test cricket's 65th venue, an industrial town 40 miles north of Lahore, saw only 36 overs in two and a half hours' play on an interrupted first day. Over the next four not a single ball was sent down, because of bad light, persistent drizzle and the dreadful state of the pitch and square. Sri Lanka had brought in Mahanama for the unfit opener Samarasekera, while Pakistan, guessing correctly that the pitch would help seamers, brought in Saleem Jaffer instead of the off-spinner Akram Raza. But, as De Silva chose to field, it was the Sri Lankan front-line bowlers, especially Wickremasinghe, in his second Test, who had the chance to impress. Ramiz Raja reached his second fifty of the series, with six fours, while the 18-year-old Zahid Fazal enhanced his reputation through an obdurate 21 spread over an hour and a half. But with a second draw inevitable, the rubber was left to be decided in Faisalabad.

Close of play: First day, Pakistan 109-2 ( Ramiz Raja 51*, Javed Miandad 20*); Second day, No play: Third day, No play; Fourth day, No play.
