Drew, Kruger among eight axed by Tasmania

ESPNcricinfo staff

The fast bowler Brendan Drew and the batsman Nick Kruger are among eight players who will be axed from Tasmania's contract list for next summer. A fortnight ago, Drew and Kruger were playing in the Sheffield Shield final but neither man did enough to encourage the selectors to retain them on the contract list.

The wicketkeeper Brady Jones, the opening batsman Jon Wells, the seamer Ben Laughlin, the batsman Ashton May, the allrounder Matthew Day and the rookie spinner Marc Simonds will also be delisted.

"While we are hopeful that some of these players remain in Hobart to chase their dream of playing cricket at the highest level, Cricket Tasmania wishes those who do not all the best with their cricket futures," Tasmania's chairman of selectors, Michael Farrell, said.

The axing of state players is expected to be significant across most states this year with Cricket Australia keen to reduce the number of players offered central deals. That will create a knock-on effect with many players who were on national contracts needing to be squeezed into state lists.

While 32 players held CA contracts by the end of the summer, including seven who were upgraded due to playing enough matches for Australia, that number could be slashed to as few as 15 when the new list is revealed. Tasmania are expected to have to find room on their state list to accommodate Tim Paine and Jason Krejza, both of whom hold CA contracts that are unlikely to be renewed.

@katandthat3 :- "Really surprised about Laughlin and Wells getting cut"... Why?... Their Shield performances have been poor... Laughlin FC bowling aver @54.75 / SR 104.7... Wells batting aver @16.54... Not good enough for a State 2nd XI... The BBL isn't State based so those contracts are external to this process...

@RandyOZ... There's redneck, wktkeepersdad + more SA supporters around - even I've got a soft spot for the redbacks though I have torn allegiances... "Worst in the comp"... ?... Considering there are 2 comps - SS & OD'ers, then NSW would sit at the bottom with WA & SA probably coming next... SA would be better off looking to get a Steketee, Sandhu, Cassell, Agar, etc... Lots of good young talent coming through or pinch Josh Lalor & Coulter-Nile...

We are the worst in the comp, should prolly recruit some of these guys (I am a redbacks supporter - one of the few left!)

Really surprised about Laughlin and Wells getting cut, thought they had some pretty good performances for Tassie but in saying that they did pretty well in the BBL and will still be with Hobart, if not, definitely by another city. Laughlin is a excellent short form bowler and gun in the field. I guess with the BBL now we'll see quite a few others lose state contracts and look to pick up a BBL one to supplement the loss of the state one.

@DT Webb - you don't have to have a contract to play. That's why Farrell said "...we are hopeful that some of these players remain in Hobart to chase their dream of playing cricket at the highest level..." @popcorn - man that's harsh!!!!!!!!

ben laughlin got axed? wow that is crazy, someone will pick him up for sure. SA could do with him

Can't see any of these players getting a start interstate in any starting no.12 team under their current form... Drew, Kruger, Laughlin nearing 30 & haven't achieved anything in Shield - possibles that never quite made it... Too many young guys coming through that are much better & need time in SS... Seeing that Tassie are dropping 8 to accommodate 2 Oz ex-contracted players, then they obviously have a number of new players that they are looking at - local & interstate... Sth Oz need quality young bowlers & wouldn't give this group a look at - more likely other good young bowlers that arne't getting a decent go in their home State...

Can someone correct me if I am wrong, but am I right in saying that because they don't have a contract doesn't mean they can't play? I think Lockyear was dropped last season but made a few appearances?

The FIRST Person who should have been axed is JAMES FAULKNER. He is the ROOT CAUSE why we lost the Ryobi Cup Final. He couldn't even score the ONE RUN THAT WAS NEEDED TO WIN. Ask Ricky Ponting. It would have been his first Ryobi / ODI win fo his State.George Bailey and Punter brought the scores level.Thn James Faulkner FAILED when it mattered. He should have been given the Damien Martyn treatment - he was banished from Test Cricket for six years after Australia lost to South Africain 1994.
