Adam Hollioake, the former England captain, has appeared in an Australian court over debts estimated at A$23m ($22m) after the property development company that he ran in Perth with his father, John, after retiring from cricket went bankrupt.
Hollioake, whose company has been declared bankrupt, has appeared in court to answer questions about his financial affairs and to confirm how much money he owes to about 40 creditors, including another England captain, his Surrey and England team-mate Alec Stewart.
Hollioake, 40, told the Daily Mail that he was a victim of the financial crisis, saying: "Alec understands the position I got myself into, as do the other creditors, apart from one who is determined to stamp me into the ground.
"What happened was mostly out of my hands, although I accept that I did not apply the same professionalism in my business affairs as I did in my cricket.
"There have been claims that I've ripped people off, run away with their money, got it all tucked away, secretly loaded myself up. The truth is, I've been left with nothing. Nothing, that is, except the devotion of my wife, Sherryn, and the love of my kids.
"When we married I was captain of England, good looking, plenty of money, not a care in the world. Now she is married to a fat old guy, not good looking any more, and no money."

Posted by SRT_best_with_vivdonsobers on (July 18, 2012, 7:06 GMT)He should play five years of IPL. Everything will be sorted. Life will be okay when he gets IPL quick money
Posted by venkatesh018 on (July 18, 2012, 5:03 GMT)Try getting into the IPL. The quality of cricket in the league is well suited to a 40 year old fat man. Far worser cricketers than u are earning incredible amounts.
Posted by dutchy on (July 18, 2012, 1:39 GMT)""What happened was mostly out of my hands" - way to accept responsibility there, Adam! Yet another cricketer bites the dust in business - he should give Craig McDermott a call.
Posted by Meety on (July 18, 2012, 0:03 GMT)Going to have to fight a lot of fights to make the coin needed to pay that off - or just go bankrupt & do it all again in a couple of years!
Posted by yessaurabh on (July 17, 2012, 22:17 GMT)try to get into IPL. Age and fitness might not permit to play there, but sure some waiting staff,or similar associated jobs would be there for you. sorry but no sympathy for someone who owes 22 million to creditors. sympathy goes to all the creditors including Alec Stewart
Posted by AdrianVanDenStael on (July 17, 2012, 21:19 GMT)I don't even think its true that Hollioake is fat. There was a story a few weeks ago about him doing some cage-fighting with some photos and he looked in pretty good trim for his age. I think his comment about being fat is just the sort of thing people say about themselves in moments of self-deprecation and sadness whether it's true or not, and Hollioake has had plenty of sadness in his life. Hollioake is hardly the first individual whose business ventures have gone wrong, and don't forget that after his brother died in such sad circumstances in 2002, Hollioake helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity. Surely it shouldn't be too hard to wish Adam Hollioake well.
Posted by JG2704 on (July 17, 2012, 20:51 GMT)Shame for him. He and his family have had a terribly stressful time of things. He always came across as a decent guy so I hope he gets himself sorted. All the best to the Hollioake family
Posted by KennytheLeggie on (July 17, 2012, 19:13 GMT)@Xolile. I do not see what his weight has to do with it. Just because someone is indisciplined in one aspect of their life, does not mean it has any adverse effect on another, or indeed could be personality trait that would define a person completely. I believe he said he was fat as a form of self deprivation to deal with his current situation rather than an conclusive post-analytical statement. I do think you are correct however, that he does not deserve sympathy, but his wife and kids deserve some thought, and I for one wish them the best of luck.
