Mushfiqur Rahim named Bangladesh captain

ESPNcricinfo staff

Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim has been named the Bangladesh captain for the home series against West Indies and Pakistan in October and December. Mahmudullah, the allrounder, has been appointed vice-captain by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

"This is the ultimate honour for any cricketer. I thank the board for entrusting me with this responsibility," Mushfiqur said. "I am fully aware of the expectations of the entire nation and I will be totally committed towards ensuring that the Bangladesh team strives towards fulfilling the dream of millions.

"To lead the team well, I will have to perform both off and on the field. At this moment we are trying to set our mind on the West Indies series, the preparation is going on and we still have a month left."

Bangladesh were left without a captain and vice-captain after the board had sacked Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal from the positions after a disappointing tour of Zimbabwe, where they lost the one-off Test as well as the ODI series. The BCB said that Shakib and Tamim had been axed because "their leadership was not satisfactory" and there were reports of indiscipline as well during the Zimbabwe series.

"In Zimbabwe only one or two of our players performed while the whole team was missing its rhythm," Mushfiqur said. "My target will be to lead the team so that we come out with a result that is achieved through team performance."

Mushfiqur was the favourite to succeed Shakib as captain since he was one of few Bangladesh players who command a spot in the XI in all formats of the game. He also led the Bangladesh team during the BCB Cup, while Mahmudullah led the Bangladesh A side.

Preliminary squad for West Indies series: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Mahmudullah (vc), Imrul Kayes, Tamim Iqbal, Shahriar Nafees, Mohammad Ashraful, Junaid Siddique, Shakib Al Hasan, Alok Kopali, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Nasir Hossain, Naeem Islam, Shahadat Hossain, Nazmul Hossain, Shuvogoto Hom, Shurawadi Shuvo, Raqibul Hassan, Syed Rasel, Robiul Islam, Mohammad Elias, Sahagir Hossain.

Bangladesh still aren't there yet, many pieces are still missing, but look at the ages of all these players. They have time on their side to get their act together, in 3-5 years though they need to be competing to move up the rankings in ODI's and tests. And not just to no. 8, they need to be 4-6 at their best with this generation

@mrgupta...........yeah INDIA won over australia and england when these two team had lack of quality players.in 50's and 60's was the bad time 4 world cricket...........the then Australia and England side's standard was not so high rather their standard is now...........at that time win was comparatively much easier than present.....If INDIA get test status now they would face same problem like BD facing.

I always hate when a captain gets sacking after losing, hoping Mushfiqur's captaincy won't end this way. Ameen

mushfiq has quality and a good cricketing brain...hope he will lead the team nicely .most importantly he has to perform regularly and play good as well.best of luck...

  • gorsi on September 21, 2011, 9:54 GMT

Good move by BCB but they gotta be concentrating on cricket now.. Mushfiq is a good choice snce he is reliable with bat and being a keeper reads the game well enough. He needs to ensure that he plays higher up the order in Tests n ODIs since he looks like only player in bangla sqaud who could accumulate runs for team and if Tamim, Ashraful and shakib play as they always do with mushfiq playing throughout the inning they can do wonders.. Fingers Crossed n best of luck

You guys are really sounding like a broken record. Your constant harassment of BD in these articles tells us much more about your character than about their cricket.

  • MijanurRahman on September 21, 2011, 5:30 GMT

Let's wait and see whether these new leaders can lead to avoid a white wash by West Indies. Anyway, Mahmudullah will be able to bowl as a full bowler and show his quality as an allrounder.

  • mrgupta on September 21, 2011, 4:36 GMT

@Bang_La: Have you heard something about stats in Cricket? Get your facts right. Bangladesh has so far played 69 tests and including their victories against West Indies A side they have Won 3 tests and lost 60. Win-Loss 0.05. India after their 69th test had Won 6 and lost only 29 including Victories against England and Australia. Win-loss 0.20. The Win-Loss ratio was 4 times better than Bangladesh and Victories against Top opposition. Within an year after that India defeated England (in India) by 2-0. ICC (MCC at that time) didn't had the guts to ban a team which had blanked a Top opposition in a test series. Let Bangladesh repeat that and then talk.

  • on September 21, 2011, 2:48 GMT

Bang needs to be demoted to Associate Status - it does not belong in Test Cricket.

  • Ronsars on September 21, 2011, 2:45 GMT

Mushfiqur is right choice as he has captaincy experience but i think Mahmudullah is too young for VC....Anyway good luck guys am sure home series against WI will be a keenly contested one

  • Bang_La on September 21, 2011, 1:17 GMT

Andrew Miller must be happy to see his Five feet nothing cricketer in captain's boots. And @Sam_k14, if ICC survived without demoting India over 75 years, it will survive few more years with Bangladesh in test arena. No worries :)

  • demon_bowler on September 20, 2011, 23:28 GMT

Congratulations to the Mighty Atom, whose batting certainly caught the eye when England played Bangladesh home and away last year. Bangladesh have certainly improved in the last couple of years, but need someone to give them a bit of steel in test matches -- Bangladesh often play well in one innings, but then throw it away in the other. For all the maverick brilliance of Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur looks to have a real test match temperament.

  • smudgeon on September 20, 2011, 22:20 GMT

Congrats to Mushi, I like the guy, he's shown some grit and determination at test level which is strangely absent from most of the other BD team. Anyways, let's hope the board let Mushi & Mahmudullah have time to settle into the roles, chopping & changing your leadership team is a recipe for unrest, disaster, and ultimately more heartache on the field. Like others who've posted here, I'd like to see Mahmudullah bowl a bit more, he seems strangely under-utilised (particularly in ODIs) for an all-rounder.

  • on September 20, 2011, 22:02 GMT

arrogance is wat caused shakib/tamim to lose their positions . hope mushfiq/mahmudullah grab the opportunity with both hands and bring about good results in west indies series .good luck and no arrogance please . peace!

  • Legaleagle on September 20, 2011, 22:01 GMT

They can name anyone to be the captain of this team but it wont do any good. This team is not worth getting into test cricket. It's because of poor management not because of players. Players feel arrogant without achieving anything. This team performs well against non test playing countries only. I really hope BD do something more than just changing captains if they want to be a force to be reckoned with in world cricket. They are no way near that at this time.

  • on September 20, 2011, 19:54 GMT

GOOD CHOICE..HOPE THEY DON'T BECOME ARROGANT LIKE SHAKIB.

  • S.S.Sagar on September 20, 2011, 19:36 GMT

  • reyme on September 20, 2011, 19:33 GMT

@Sam_k14 Why do you think BD has not reached Test Status? Under the new coach the leadership they will improve further, like it or not.

  • on September 20, 2011, 19:11 GMT

Congrets Mushfiq, we like your bangla shouting during game time and wish you good future in coming series

  • tigers_eye on September 20, 2011, 18:58 GMT

Congrats to Mushi and Riad. Wait till Mushi starts dropping crucial catches and Riad getting few single digit scores. These folks who lauding the new Captain and VC would want their heads in a heartbeat. Captaincy is not like an underwear that one can change everyday. There has to be a play in grooming and sticking with the plan. BCB lacks in that big time. Funny is Mushi was sacked from VC for indisciplinary reasons. Make up your mind board, if not, do not tamper with the team combination and leadership.

  • Sam_k14 on September 20, 2011, 18:30 GMT

No point in changing the horse when cart is the same. BD should not be playing Test cricket. Period. The team has not reached test status and players are not test material. Mushfiqur Rahim is not going to make any difference. Hopefully ICC will demote BD and get them to play county cricket for few more years and then reassess

  • BanglaChild on September 20, 2011, 18:14 GMT

Although the circumstances under which Shakib and Tamim were removed (not using the term fired) was unwarranted, the golden rule is not to have your best players take captaincy and vice-captaincy. What waits to be seen is how Shakib and Tamim respond through their personal performance and cooperation towards Mushie and Riyadh. Let time speak as one can hope for the best.

  • on September 20, 2011, 18:06 GMT

BCB didn't have any other choice, did they? I don't have any problem with Mushi bt as far as i'm concerned Riad's place in the team sometime gets uncertain.Raj could have been a better option at for ODI and T20

  • on September 20, 2011, 16:49 GMT

but he needs to improve his wicket keeping a lot.

  • on September 20, 2011, 16:42 GMT

  • on September 20, 2011, 15:32 GMT

I always thought dat Mushfik z a gud leader.....it z true dat he z better dan Sakib, bt after Sakib,,,,,,he z best...about Mahmudulla, i cant tell anyfing bt i thinik Shahreer Nafees or Alok Kapali could b better choice dan Mahmudullah

  • on September 20, 2011, 15:25 GMT

I mean Musfique is well captain of Bangladesh. Earlier he is the vise captain of Bangladesh.

  • on September 20, 2011, 15:08 GMT

When board selected last time Shakib as a captain that time my opinion was to select Mushfiqur as a captain. Now I congratulates the BCB for this selecting.

I think not leaning anything from his past.

  • tauhid_aks on September 20, 2011, 15:02 GMT

@Tarahb, please know about cricket and then comment........ I think Mushfiq is a good choice as vice captain, but he is a little immatured.BCB needs to groom the next captain from now on, as Australia did with Michael Clarke, and they are getting the results.

  • Arthaurian on September 20, 2011, 14:58 GMT

Stagnant choice for a stagnant team.

Rahim captained the U19 side that included Shakib and Tamim, so i guess this was the most likely decision, although i have a feeling BCB will go back to masrafe once and if he comes back. Riyad is still learning...he has a long way to go..

  • on September 20, 2011, 14:04 GMT

With gloves,a batting average around 26 is quite satisfactory atleast for an inexperienced side(as you may call them).Mushfiqur-Rahim's appointment as the skipper can serve the purpose for quite a long period as he is still 23 although he has already witnessed 98 ODI's.If the decision clicks and works for Banladesh,a lot of rising talent will get excellent grooming under his nose.

  • on September 20, 2011, 14:04 GMT

ash should be the captain now..........

  • Praxis on September 20, 2011, 13:27 GMT

Will we ever know the details why Shakib & Tamim was stripped off their responsibilities? Its not that I think Shakib was a very good captain. But we need to hear clear statements from BCB or else we'll stay confused. Mahmudullah is a good choice, although there wasn't anybody else left to be picked.

  • tarahb123 on September 20, 2011, 13:26 GMT

Mohammad Ashraful is the best player in the world, he should be captain

  • on September 20, 2011, 13:06 GMT

Let's welcome Mushfiqur Rahim & Mahmudullah Riyad. They are now the new captain & vice captain

  • Masking_Tape on September 20, 2011, 13:04 GMT

WOW! Shocking! I did not see that coming! Where did BCB pull that from?

Like this is a news.. I knew Riyad was gonna be VC too. Specially after the way the made him the skipper in that BCB tourny.

  • on September 20, 2011, 13:00 GMT

As predicted. would love to now see a more solidified bd unit and perhaps mumadullah moving up the order instead of being wasted down at 7 or 8. hopefully this will be good for bd and allow shakib and tammim to really focus on their game. hopefully the captaincy wont have a negative effect on mushfiqur, seeing as he seems to be the one holding down the number 4 spot as well as the strains of keeping and rallying the troops... high expectations for them against a much stronger WI squad they beat last time...

  • on September 20, 2011, 12:55 GMT

Good decision! I never liked it when Shakib neglected Mahmudullah even when he bowled well in an innings. Based on recent performance, this is is my best 11 for the next 6 months- 1.Tamim Iqbal 2.Shahriar Nafees 3.Junaid Siddique 4.Mohammad Ashraful 5.Shakib al Hassan 6.Mushfiqur Rahim 7.Naeem Islam 8.Mahmudullah 9.Abdur Razzak 10.Rubel Hossain 11.Nazmul Hossain

In this team you have- - 2 fast bowlers (Rubel and Nazmul) - 4 spinners (Abdur Razzak, Shakib, Mahmudullah and Naeem - AND the batting line is DEEP (#1 to #8)

This is the best combination you can have for the sub-continent wickets

  • on September 20, 2011, 12:41 GMT

Good decision by BCB as this was the only logical duo. Hopefully we'll be able to see more of Mahmudullah's spin from now on, way to go for Bangladesh team.

  • on September 20, 2011, 12:13 GMT

It is really a complicated decision taken by the BCB. Shakib was the best performer in Zimbabwe and still he is best player in Bangladesh who takes the challenge from the front. If Shakib n Tamim can play good against the West Indies only then Bangladesh can get something from forthcoming series. Anyway good luck for Mushfiq n co.....
