Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has been named the ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2011 during the ICC Awards ceremony in London. Sangakkara also won the ICC People's Choice Award, capping a memorable evening for him.

"It's a great honour first of all to have been nominated for this award [ODI Cricketer] and a great honour to have actually won it," said Sangakkara, who was not in London because of the ongoing home series against Australia.

"I would like to thank the rest of my team-mates, they have done a great job over the years in one-day cricket and I am privileged to be part of this and [to have] led these guys for just over two years. I thank you again, I feel very very proud."

Sangakkara played 25 ODIs in the period under consideration - August 11, 2010 to August 3, 2011 - and scored 1049 runs at an average of 55.21 including a century and seven half-centuries. He also had 26 catches and 10 stumpings as wicketkeeper and led Sri Lanka to the final of the 2011 World Cup.

Sangakkara won the ODI award ahead of Australia's Shane Watson, India's Gautam Gambhir and South Africa's Hashim Amla.

For the People's Choice Award, Sangakkara received more votes than Amla, England batsman Jonathan Trott, West Indies opener Chris Gayle and India captain MS Dhoni.

First of all Congradulations to Sanga. You are the Peoples choise for cricket thats for sure. You have proven that with lots of things during your leadership. Unfortunately you missed the Test player of the year because we had not won many matches. If we had definitely you would get that award too.

Sad part is we miss you nas Sri Lanka captain where we need matured, calm and professional guy.

  • POSTED BY on | September 13, 2011, 9:25 GMT

Congratulations! Sanga you deserve this awards. I wish you all the best for coming years too!

  • POSTED BY TWIC on | September 13, 2011, 9:20 GMT

In my honest pinion, it should have been Hashim Amla who won this award. An absolutely fantastic year for him with the bat, only gets him a nomination, thats just not right. It is much harder to open an innings in ODI's than to come in at 3 or 4, when the ball stops swinging too much or when spin is introduced.

One thing to remember is Sanga plays his home matches on flat, spin-friendly pitches, where pace bowling is nearly negated. Amla plays in South Africa, a pace bowling haven, making opening an innings even more difficult.

Though let it be said, I have the utmost respect for Sanga as a player, and as human being.

However, I was amazed how he was selected as the readers' choice, simply because when Dhoni is there, you probably expect Indians to go with him. However, its now very clear that if any player deserve it, the world (even someone over their country players) would accept it. We all are happy if you take the captaincy again !

    one of the Great sportsmen.

  • POSTED BY on | September 12, 2011, 23:04 GMT

@Ahsan_Shere, Sangakkara only averages 40.48 while he was the keeper, but Gilchrist averaged 47.61, all of which while he was the keeper, and his batting average had been above 50 until December 2005. However, Sangakkara has only ever really done great things with the bat while he was not keeper, when he averages 70.84. Gilchrist was also a much more explosive player, much more of a matchwinner with the bat in both formats. Also, Sangakkara has played more than half of his test matches in Sri Lanka, on slow, low pitches where he averages 61.85. I agree that Dhoni and Stewart aren't as good, but if anyone is to be rated higher as a batsman/keeper (which is what Gilchrist and Sangakkara are, as opposed to keeper/batsmen) it would have to be Matthew Prior or Andy Flower.

  • POSTED BY on | September 12, 2011, 22:31 GMT

Winning a people's choice award against the Indian cricket captain is no easy task, for a country with one sixtieth of the population.

Sri Lanka is lucky to have Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena in the team - the most elegant batsmen in the world today. Them batting together is like listening to Mozart or seeing a Stanley Kubrick movie - pure entertainment (ok, maybe not as disturbing as Kubrick can be...).

I wish Sangakkara, my nephew-in-law by a long winded distant relationship, (although he is three years older than me), all the best, and may he reach heights hitherto unknown..

Sangakkara is the all time best Wicket Keeper Batsman ahead of Gilchrist, Dhoni & Stewart.

AMLA? over a thousand runs at 75 with 5 ODI centuries. Of course this system is so biased cos Amla was statistically miles ahead of cook and trott as well.

What a cricketer Sangakkara is, also having been chosen as the Captain of the Test team, now the ODI player and the Peoples Choice which of course is a tribute to the ICC panel.Kumar deserves all this credit and many more. I'm also very glad about Trott winning the award who has been the backbone of the England team. Ranil Herath - Kent
