The Review of the Structure of Cricket, the location of the ICC Offices, the issue of media accreditation for banned players, amendments to Code of Conduct to specifically include selectors and a review into the structure of the Champions Trophy were amongst the issues considered by the ICC at its Board meetings in Lahore which concluded today.
The Board dealt with the issues in the following ways:
The Review of the Structure of Cricket
The Board considered a number of alternatives to the current five-year calendar for international cricket, including extending the calendar to six years, and the option of introducing a modified program for two members.
After considering the proposals, the Board believes that each country needs time to consider the implications of any change with their own stakeholders.
The proposals put forward will now be taken back by each director to their own country for further discussions on the matter. These talks will take place at the next Board meetings, in March 2005.
The Location of the ICC Offices
The future location of the ICC Offices was again discussed by the Board, with further advice from UK Sport. Its proposal for the ICC to remain in London is being considered.
The Board has asked the Chief Executive, Mr Malcolm Speed, to continue negotiations with the interested countries, with a view to finalizing this decision before the end of November.
Media Accreditation for Banned Players
The countries considered the recent situation where a player banned for life for corruption offences was granted media accreditation for an international match.
The countries agreed to introduce a standard media accreditation condition for international cricket which means that players banned for match-fixing and related activities will not be granted media accreditation for international matches and events while the ban is in force.
The Board is of the view that, given cricket's history and the obligation to protect the game from corruption, such action is justified and reasonable.
Code of Conduct amendments
The Board elected to make clear that the ICC Code of Conduct does apply to the selectors of national cricket teams by including a specific reference to these officials under the definitions included in the Code.
Previously, the Code had made reference to "Team Officials" without making specific reference to selectors and this had created confusion as to whether these officials were bound by the code.
Review of the format for the Champions Trophy
Following a report from ICC Chief Executive, the Board agreed to review the format of the Champions Trophy ahead of the next staging of the event in 2006.
It was agreed that these discussions will take also take place at the next ICC Board meetings in March 2005.
Full reports on the meeting can be found on the official ICC website.
