Katich takes Derbyshire captaincy

Simon Katich, recently signed as one of Derbyshire's overseas players, will captain the county next season after taking over from Graeme Welch who has stood down.

Welch wants to concentrate on his form during his testimonial season and after discussions with David Houghton, the director of cricket, it was decided Katich - who leads New South Wales - was the man for the job.

Katich said: "I have been fortunate to play under some great captains and have led New South Wales so I intend to bring all that experience to Derbyshire and carry on the progress the club made under Graeme."

Houghton added: "Graeme was an outstanding captain on and off the field for us last year but in Simon we had a natural alternative and proven leader."
