Sri Lanka call up Maharoof and Silva

ESPNcricinfo staff

Sri Lanka have called up allrounder Farveez Maharoof and wicketkeeper Kaushal Silva to provide cover for the players who will miss the start of the England tour due to the IPL. Sri Lanka's newly-appointed captain Tillakaratne Dilshan will be in England by May 11, but five members of the Sri Lanka squad will stay in India and are expected to arrive in time to play against England Lions, at Derby, from May 19.

Malintha Warnapura, the opening batsman, who was set to cover for Dilshan had he stayed at the IPL, has been withdrawn along with stand-by fast bowler Saminda Eranga. The latter was to be a replacement for fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep but it appears likely Pradeep will travel to England early instead of remaining with Royal Challengers Bangalore where he has yet to play a match for the franchise

However, with Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Dilhara Fernando, Thisara Perera and Suraj Randiv not available for the Middlesex match the selectors have drafted in reinforcements.

Maharoof is currently playing county cricket with Lancashire where he has made an impressive start to the season with a hundred on his debut against Somerset at Liverpool. However, the fixture list could have worked in Lancashire's favour with them not in Championship action the week Maharoof will be needed by Sri Lanka and he may only miss one CB40 match against Somerset. He hasn't played Test cricket since 2007.

Silva, 24, is uncapped but has an impressive first-class average of 45 and will provide wicketkeeping cover for Prasanna Jayawardene.

Well all are playing the selector. There were so many who were condemning the selection of Angelo Mathews and Tissara Perera some time back. Some were comparing Mathews with Maharoof. Well now the results are clear. I will say now when Angelo is fit he should bat either at number 3 or 4. Dinesh Chandimal should also bat either at 3 or 4. Sanga and Mahela should bat at 5 and 6 then we will create two stars required to take over from Sanga and Mathews a when they retire. Mathews batting at 6 always run short of partners despite having an average of over 37 in tests and 35 in ODIs.

'Silva will provide wicketkeeping cover for Prasanna Jayawardene' ?? why not replace Prasanna with K. Silva?

They didnt pick tharanga because he is not as good as other available players. 1.chandimul(wk?) 2.para 3. sangakarra, 4. mahela.J 5.samaraweera 6. dilshan 7. thirimanne/silva/prassana 8. pradeep 9.mendis 10.herath/randiv 11. fernando/perera/lakmal. Personally i feel chandimul should keep to open up an extra batting slot(for thirimanne), prassana is reasonable batsman but not a 1st choice batsman. Kaushal silva cud keep instead and bat 7 as he could even be picked as specialist batsman, while if sri lanka wants a trusted and experienced test keeper they'll go for prassana. all in all tharanga should sit on sidelines and let youngsters like chandimul get some test cricket

Good luck Maharoof! You are a too good player to be left out. Think that you will be able to impress at seeming english wickets. If Angelo is not fit. Maha is the best replacement.

clearly Kaushal Silva has been picked for his batting n not as a keeper.. just as cover for the players staying back for the ipl..he averages 45 n has played twice as more matches as chandimal and tirimanne.. he probably shouldve been in the original squad ahead of tirimanne but i guess the selectors felt he wud get his chance anyways as soon as prassanna retires.. silva also captains SSC even though he is very young.. chandimal, silva n tirimanne are definitely the future of SL cricket.. all the best to them n the rest of the team..

from what i have seen I am not sure if Dilshan has the right temperament to be the captain. i think he gets flustered quite quickly. This can easily pass on to the younger players and affect their confidence.

if maharoof selected for Sl test squad his role will be a different one. He will have to play as a batting alrounder not as a bowling alrounder

Why oh why do we exclude tharanga as opener in the longer format? He is a quality player irrespective if the format.we want the best team possible for the England tour and to continue to improve

kaushal silva is very good batsman , if he has given up wicket-keeping . he would be selected to sl aide for batting, for example he is better than lahiru thirimanna . because he is considered a wicket-keeper he is not given the spot!
