James Taylor, the Nottinghamshire batsman, has been added to England's Performance Squad after being left out of the initial 26-man selection.
Taylor captained the Lions over the winter and despite apparently missing out on the 2012 EPS he led the side against the touring West Indians at Northampton, in the build up to the first Test, scoring a hundred from the middle order. The selectors are able to name up to 30 players and make additions at any point in the season, giving a clear indication of who is in their plans.

"James is a talented young player and we feel that his performances this season, including an impressive innings for England Lions last week, merit inclusion in the England Performance Squad," Geoff Miller, the national selector, said. "The EPS is designed to allow the selectors to monitor the development of international players and better prepare them for the demands of the international game."
Taylor, who has played in one ODI for England, moved from Leicestershire to Nottinghamshire over the winter but, despite making a hundred against Loughborough in his first appearance, he is yet to set Division One alight, with 225 Championship runs at 28.12 and a highest score of 46.

Posted by maximum6 on (May 19, 2012, 22:14 GMT)At last sense has prevailed. I hope he has a long and fruitful England career. he has the temperamnt, i believe.
Posted by jmcilhinney on (May 19, 2012, 18:16 GMT)hahaha! RandyOZ is the first person in the whole world to post a comment on an English player getting added to a development squad. Why an Australian care so much? The only logical conclusion is that he wants to know as early as possible who's going to be beating Australia in future Ashes. I guess when the up-and-coming Australian batsmen are so poor there's no point keeping tabs on their "progress". Don't worry Randy, at least your bowlers can put on a few runs.
Posted by@RandyOZ - Almost as rare as an Australian batsman under the age of thirty who doesn't look an absolute mug when confronted with half-decent bowlers.
Posted byvery very happy for him need some youngters in the team now ... but why u left lesta for man ??
Posted by jmcilhinney on (May 19, 2012, 16:12 GMT)They did say when the initial squad was announced that there were a few places left available so I think they always wanted Taylor in but they wanted him to prove that he deserved it. No doubt that century for the Lions was enough to do that, so it certainly was an important innings. I also notice no Borthwick or Kerrigan and no Compton in that squad.
Posted by RandyOZ on (May 19, 2012, 15:43 GMT)An actual Englishman? Surely not?
