England strolled to a nine-wicket win in the second Test at Headingley, and duly wrapped up the series 2-0 against a bruised and battered New Zealand side. After Matthew Hoggard and Stephen Harmison took 40 minutes to knock off the last four wickets for 59 runs, Marcus Trescothick guided England to their small target with the minimum of fuss.

New Zealand were always going to be in need of a miracle at the start of the day, but Hoggard and Harmison made sure that didn't happen. Scott Styris made a positive start, whipping Harmison for three fours on the leg side in the first over of the day, but he fell in the next over to a sparkling catch by the man of the moment, Geraint Jones. Hoggard bowled a classic awayswinger which Styris edged, and Jones dived fully to his right in front of first slip to take the catch (118 for 6).

The wicket didn't deter Jacob Oram and Chris Cairns from playing their shots, though. Oram slashed Hoggard through the vacant third-man area, and drove him to the rope next ball. Cairns then smashed Hoggard way back over his head into the stands, and England suddenly had a nervous eye on the scoreboard.

However, Hoggard averted any panic by trapping Cairns leg-before. Similar to the one which got Nathan Astle yesterday evening, this ball cut in and hit Cairns in front of middle and leg (144 for 7).

Michael Papps, nursing a broken knuckle, came in at No. 9, and he prodded tentatively forward to his first ball from Hoggard and was put down by Graham Thorpe at second slip, to deny Hoggard his 100th Test wicket. But Papps didn't last much longer, as he fended a Harmison short one to Michael Vaughan at silly mid-off (149 for 8).

Those two wickets sent Oram into attack mode. He twice smeared Hoggard over the mid-on boundary, the first of which was the biggest six of the match, and continued to swing at everything. However, Chris Martin was then run out without facing. Oram left a short delivery from Hoggard go through to Jones, and as the batsmen attempted a quick single, Jones was alert enough to shy at the stumps, and hit them, with Martin way short of his mark.

With Daniel Vettori unable to bat because of his torn hamstring, that was that for New Zealand, and England required only 45 runs for victory.

Trescothick and Andrew Strauss took their time before Strauss edged Daryl Tuffey low to Nathan Astle's left at third slip for 10 (18 for 1). But it didn't matter, as Trescothick continued his good form, slapping five fours in an unbeaten 30 to take England home.
