Dilhara Lokuhettige replaces injured Welegedara

Sri Lankan fast bowler Chanaka Welegedara is unlikely to travel to England for the Champions Trophy, after failing to recover sufficiently from an ankle injury he sustained on May 18. Welegedara failed a fitness test on Wednesday morning, and Sri Lanka Cricket have since named seam bowler Dilhara Lokuhettige as a replacement. The selection was cleared by the sports minister, but has not yet been approved by the ICC.

Lokuhettige, 32, played eight ODIs for Sri Lanka in 2005, and two Twenty20 internationals in 2008. He has six ODI wickets at 36.83. He has largely been picked on his form in the recently concluded List A tri-series in Pallekele, where he was the joint highest wicket-taker: nine scalps at an average of 17.66. If approved, he will be one of four pace specialists on tour, with Lasith Malinga, Shaminda Eranga and Nuwan Kulasekara also traveling. Allrounders Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews are part of the squad as well.

"SLC have written to the ICC Event Technical Committee regarding this replacement," an SLC statement said. "The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad."

Welegedara had picked up the injury during the penultimate match of the tri-series, which he left, in pain, during his third over. His chances of traveling to England had looked promising on Tuesday after scans revealed no breaks or fractures, but inflammation persisted and he was unable to put sufficient weight on his landing foot.

Welegedara, also 32, was the leader of Sri Lanka's Test pace attack, but has been plagued by injury in the last 12 months, in which he only completed one Test match. He strained his groin playing England in March last year, before tearing a shoulder muscle before the Pakistan series in July. He recovered in time to travel to Australia at the end of the year, but tore a hamstring early in the second Test in Melbourne, and has not played any international cricket since. Largely regarded a Test specialist, Welegedara has not played limited-overs international cricket since June 2010.

The Sri Lanka squad leaves for England in the early hours of Monday morning.

I like to give a chance to Kpugedara.Because Mathews+Kapugeadara+Thisara can be dangerous trio...

my XI - 1. Dilshan 2. Kushal 3. Sangakkara 4. Chandimal 5. Mahela 6. Mathews 7. Thisara 8. Lokuhettige 9. Kulasekara 10. Sachithra 11. Malinga Sachithra instead of Herath because he gets a good bounce in English pitches and can bowl well to both left and right hand batsmen. Lokuhettige because he's in good form and can swing the ball both ways around 135kmh+ and can do what Jeevan does with the bat. I'd get Thirimanne in place of Chandimal but since he's the vice-captain of the team, they won't drop him. So this team it is.. hopefully this team will be good enough to beat any team in any day.

this team is the right team that's what i think ,but we should keep hearth in the playing xi because he is the best spinner ewe got work he do in test is amazing but no one give the recognition he deserves, even in major ODI tournaments he does a great job but some how i feel he gets dropped from finals and we loose or earlier we use someone and when he fails we call back hearth i think mehela never gave him a chance so hope anjo will play him in all matches and we will win the trophy because i believe the teams that have good spinners will do well in eng.

Sanath Aiya Can you try thisara for NO 03 position as hope he can more runs in power play overs and Lokuhetti can use in last five overs. your selection committee is one of the best up-to-date, Pl do not think of players like Rabukwella, Kupu anymore.........Pl select current informed player as this replacement. we are unlukey the some informed player like chinthaka jayasinghe who left the country because of De mel's selection commitee. But I feel current informed players will have a luck to knock the for national team.

  • Karnain on May 24, 2013, 1:11 GMT

But unfortunately he will not get a chance in the playing 11 unless there is an injury to one of the pace bowlers, even in that case Eranga is there. 1. Dilshan, 2. Kushal, 3. Sanga, 4. Chandimal, 5. Mahela, 6. Anjelo, 7. Thirimanne / Mendis, 8. Tisara, 9. Kula, 10. Herath, 11. Malinga

  • ---lasitha--- on May 23, 2013, 16:49 GMT

well done sana, hope he would make it to the 11 ,with the normal batting line up i would love to see him at 9 with perera at 8( perera alone is not enough for bighitting at the end) and malinga and kule/eranga/herath. come on people look at the batting order if we go in with this line up. please comment on this

wow..what a good decision Sana...Finally Dilhara Lokuhettige reworded for his skills...His allround ability made his club Moors into surprise finalists in the domestic season.....His bowling is well suited for England conditions and he is a hard hitting batsman like Thisara Perera ,he is having the ability to clear the roops and can be used as a pinch hitter at any stage

  • on May 23, 2013, 8:28 GMT

oh come on. we already have 5 seamers(malinga, kulasekara, t.perera, eranga and mathews), and if you count part-timer lahiru thirimanne, we have 6. why not bring in spinner like dananjaya, shehan jayasuriya, or sachith pathiranna. or even give ajantha mendis a chance.

  • MH19 on May 22, 2013, 22:57 GMT

Another Master stroke by Chairman of Selectors Sana. Great work and good choice and now he has been given the nod he should know how to retain his place by performing.

  • on May 22, 2013, 14:05 GMT

Absolutely! no need to always give chances to younger players. We have to play some quality cricket as well. for that we need quality matured players!!

  • DilumSL on May 22, 2013, 13:42 GMT

Do we really need another fast bowler??? Malinga, Kula, Thisara and Mathews all 4 of them will be in the playing XI. We also have Eranga. It is hard to believe that management will drop Herath from the playing XI. with Herath we have 3 bowlers and two all rounders. We will be playing ENG, NZL and AUS in group stage. So why do we go with so many fast bowlers. We should include another Spinner who can bat well. It is true that we play in pitchers that help fast bowlers. but pitch itself can't take wickets and all these above teams play really well against pace.

  • on May 22, 2013, 13:25 GMT

Welagedara will always pick up an injury before a series................

  • SL_Boy on May 22, 2013, 12:20 GMT

I don't agree with sending a young guy there without experience in to this type of a tournament, young guys should be in SL A team … since we don't have a perfect fast bowler Dilhara is an excellent choice he is in prime form with bat and bowl, this will give other crickets hope and encouragement if they perform they get selected not base on their club or age.

  • shihan12 on May 22, 2013, 12:06 GMT

Even though he is 32 I think he is a good choice..Hope he will continue his form during this tour

  • ashangamage on May 22, 2013, 11:28 GMT

good choice by SLSC. He is very good all rounder

  • morgie1982 on May 22, 2013, 11:24 GMT

I think someone should remember SLC replacing 32 year old with 32 Isn't compulsory There is many young fast bowler could use also SLC replacing a genuin fast bowler with a non specialist all-rounder(his bowling also some right arm mediums)
