Rookie spinner Dananjaya gets World T20 call-up

Akila Dananjaya has been named in Sri Lanka's squad for the World Twenty20, following four impressive performances for Wayamba United in the ongoing Sri Lanka Premier League. Another uncapped player, opening batsman Dilshan Munaweera, has been picked and Ajantha Mendis has earned a recall. Mendis has not played for Sri Lanka since January after suffering a back injury.

Dananjaya, 18, had never played professional cricket prior to the SLPL, nor was he picked for the U-19 side currently competing in the World Cup in Australia. He had been selected in the preliminary 30-man squad solely on the recommendation of captain Mahela Jayawardene, who had faced him at Sri Lanka's net session. Dananjaya has taken seven wickets at the SLPL, at an average of 11 and an economy rate of 4.81.

Munaweera was picked despite not being named in the preliminary list. Renowned as a clean hitter on the domestic circuit, he showed glimpses of that power in the SLPL, but has a highest score of 36 in his four innings in the tournament so far

Mendis, though, has been impressive in the SLPL. He has nine wickets at an average of 14.11 in four matches.

A fractured finger during the ODI series against India last month had ruled out Kumar Sangakkara for four to six weeks and his selection in the 15 remains subject to his recovery in time for the competition. Likewise with seamer Nuwan Kulasekara, who suffered a groin injury in July.

There is no room in the side for batsman Upul Tharanga, who played in the Twenty20 against India earlier this month, despite scores of 65 not out and 48 for his franchise. Chamara Kapugedara, who hit a match-winning 69 from 39 balls for Uthura Rudras on Tuesday also missed out.

Sri Lanka play their first warm-up ahead of the World T20 against West Indies on September 13. Their first game of the tournament is against Zimbabwe on September 18.

Sri Lanka squad: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Angelo Mathews (vice-capt), Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lahiru Thirimanne, Jeevan Mendis, Dilshan Munaweera, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Ajantha Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Shaminda Eranga, Akila Dhanajaya.

A really good selection. My playing eleven for the first match: MJ, Dili, Sanga, Chandi, Angi, Thiri, Thisara, Kula, Ajantha, Mali, Akila Dhananjaya.

Should have dropped TM Dilshan and Herath... What's the point of having SLPL? Still they rely on aged man like Herath.. Where is Randiv , Senananyaka? Dilshan should replaced by Kapu or maharoof..

v.v.v.v.v.v.v poor selection, if am the selector, and if am giving a pen and paper, I would select KAPU as the first and automatic choice, and the whole world knows he is capable of, if some selector who misses a T20 selection, without KAPU, means some ???? I dont know, given the current form, he should surpass all.

No one would want to watch a match without KAPU..

Good luck anyway sri lankan team.

PS : Kapu put your socks on, you maybe called anytime.

Just for the record: Kapu played 3 matches in the 2011 WC, 1 game in Aus, 2 in Asian Cup and 1 t20 game against Pak. Kapugadare played total 3 matches since 2011 WC. Is he the reason we are loosing almost every series except against Pak?? How many Test opportunities he got? This is how we build our future? Till seniors retires SL don't have any cricket future.

T20 is not for ODI accumulators. The game can change in one over. How many accumulators do we have in the top 6? Too many. Australian Mickle Clark can score runs faster, can bat almost any pitch and more consistent than any of our 4 accumulators ( Mahela, Sag, Chandimal & Thirumana ) but he don't get a place in the Aus T20. First choices for t20 should be Kapu, Perera, Mathew, Maharoof, Malinga, Mendis, 1 more bowlers, keeper & 3 more batsmen s. Senior accumulator should not be a automatic selection for t20 they should be fight for their places.

  • ms2000 on August 25, 2012, 7:53 GMT

First of all they must think to drop Dinesh Chandimal and bring in an all rounder for his place. He is definitely out of form.

i'm shocked to see all the pro Kapugedara comments here, he does not deserve a place. he has dissapointed too much already. Lahiru has actually scored at a good pace in Odi's recently. we need consistent batsman, not one match wonders

Welldone Mahela you are so clever and you know how Sri Lankan Cricket should move forward and for betterment of our cricket you need to slowly blend the young with older so they become performance driven. We as Sri Lankan fans our expectations are huge from our crickerters so you and the coach and the selection committee has a huge responsibility in satisfying 21 million people. So best of luck you will get the results what you want from any age group in the team as you a respected Captain.

Can Mahela, Saga, Thiramani, Chandimal maintain a run rated 10+ if required? Injured Saga also in the 15 haha . Mahela in t20 because we need a good captain and Sag in the team because we need a keeper. For SL only hope is bowlers (Malinga, Mendis etc) and Perea, Mathew & Dishan. Glad to see youngsters got opportunities. Our t20 team is missing Kapugadare & Maharoof. Kapu & Maharoof are real match winners when comes to t20, we saw last t20 wc semis. Kapugadare should play ahead of MAHELA,Sanga,Chandimal, Thirimanna etc these players cannot even clear 30 yard circle when situation demand. Raw talent is missing sineour kabbos and accumulators play all test, odi & t20. T20 WC will be boring because we don't get a chance to see KAPU class. This wc all depend on SL bowlers Malinga & Mendis, Batsmens are real jokers except Dilshan, Pereara & Mathew.

  • on August 24, 2012, 13:06 GMT

I think Shaminda Eranga is not suitable.Mahela hit 23 off his last over.He should be replaced with Udana. Also i think it is better to insert kithruwan or kusal janith or someone instead of munaweera.

  • on August 24, 2012, 13:01 GMT

bad selection.inform batsmen dropped and out of form batsmen included.Thilan,Tharanga,Kapugedara,Maharoof informed players were dropped and out of form players Thirimanna,Chandimal included.during SLPL tournament Thirimanna scored only 68 and Chandimal scored only 35 so far.Kapugedara scored 135,Tharanga scored 124,Thilan scored 99, Maharoof scored 94.I can't believe how the team is selected.this will boomarang to Sri Lanka.

  • s2art1e on August 24, 2012, 12:07 GMT

I'm not so concerned about the omission of Kapugedera, as has been mentioned in previous posts, he has had plenty of chances and has not delivered with any sort of consistency that is expected of an international cricketer, however I cannot believe how the selection panel can leave out someone like Upul Tharanga? It is a ridiculous decision. As per the article, they have selected Munaweera who has a highest score of 36 in his four SPL innings in the tournament so far, yet Tharanga who it seems is in some kind of form, can point to two recent innings of note with 65 not out and 48. Not sure what Munaweera is like as a fielder, but Tharanga, is also probably one of Sri Lanka's most reliable and can field in many positions. With plenty of international and ICC tournament experience, and as far as I am concerned he ranks as one of Sri Lanka's best One Day and T20 cricketers, who has delivered over a number of years. I find his non selection beyond astonishing.

Very much happy about the selection of dilshan munawera,Shamindra eranga,Ajantha mendis ,jeean mendis & Akila Dhanajaya.Doubt about the selection of Lahiru Thirimanne ...He is not suitable for 20-20 format.....Angelo Perera would have been a better selection..........

@burner1985 : It's surprising how all the Kapu fans get worked up after just one good innings. spot on mate...

  • shantiratnamaj on August 24, 2012, 9:15 GMT

Good team! Only 15 can be in the squad. Instead of Ajanthan Mendis I would have preferred Kashalya weeraratne - he can bowl well and bat too. in T20 its handy to play guys who can do both bowling and batting - its just a maximum of 4 over spell - so anyone can do well or anyone can have a terrible day.Dhananjaya is a gud selection.

  • PHANTOM-X on August 24, 2012, 9:14 GMT

Thank God Kapugedara is NOT in the Squad.....@Paps123...Kapugedara only hit sixes when the ball is over pitched or too short....even ordinary players will hit when the ball is there to be hit....when bowlers bowl just short or yorker length this kapugedara guy fails miserably

  • Mahaanama on August 24, 2012, 9:13 GMT

Why do some fans cry about not including Kapugedara? Out of hundreds of matches he has played how many matches he has won for SL? How many times he has been the man of the match? What was the last time he scored two consecutive half centuries even in first class matches? Don't be silly here. We have seen what happens when he in included in playing XI. Almost every time SL ending up in losing side. Making one good knock in 25 innings doesn't make anything. Even though Thirimanne and Chandimal haven't been in form during SLPL at least they have played competitive cricket in international level. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw comments here like "No kapu no T20" because I wouldn't probably watch the match if he's playing

  • MAW71 on August 24, 2012, 8:42 GMT

I think this is the best available team. Kapugedera is a proven failure. One good knock in every 10-15 matches is simply not good enough from a professional cricketer. He was given ample opportunities to prove his worth in the team. I have seen Dhananjaya bowling and he looks a good prospect. Good to see some rookies are given a chance rather than relying on proven failures. Not so sure about Lahiru Thirimanna's selection though.

  • 9ST9 on August 24, 2012, 8:38 GMT

woah one innings from Kapu and all is forgiven. I wonder how many angry comments we'd see here if he was actually included in the side. By the way from what i hear Munaweera is a decent batsman but I don't think he will get a game.

  • JayJ404 on August 24, 2012, 8:29 GMT

Sri Lanka needs 40 runs to win in three overs.. Who would you prfer over Chandimal, Thirimanna & Kapu? Thirimanna and Chandimal are pathetic players to watch in T-20...

  • on August 24, 2012, 8:21 GMT

Good selection but Kapu deserves a place here than Chandimal...This time selectors made a mistake by not including Kapugedara.. big mistake..this is t 20.. he is a very good fielder.. chandimal current form not well...miss out kapugedara... selectors go to hell.. he is looking good..bbut he is not in the 15..

  • on August 24, 2012, 8:02 GMT

?????????????? Kapugedara ,he is the ideal t20 batsmen

  • on August 24, 2012, 7:56 GMT

How can Uncapped Dilshan Munaweera get into the squad when batters like Angelo perera, Kapugedara misses out! Kapugedara's temparament is questionable but who needs temparament to smash the ball in t20 ? There's no finisher in this squad in this sqaud...t2o is not Thirimanne's game!

  • on August 24, 2012, 7:20 GMT

Brave selection. glad to see blasting Dhilshan Munaweera in the squad. Two dhilshan can open the inning. Akila Dhananjaya's selection is bit radical. hope it can be a good one. sachithra Senanyake should be included in this squad. but no any room for good spin balling allrounder. wot to do? best 15 ppl they were selcted. this bunch have all the capabilty to take the title to Srilanka. Hope Mahela J will correctly blend this players for final recipe. All the best Boys.

we seem heavy on spinners but the selectors obviously know something I dont..I would have liked to see Senanayake in the squad as he is a very good fielder as well as his obviuos bowling abilities...good luck SL

  • JayJ404 on August 24, 2012, 6:57 GMT

Runner ball players like Sanga, Thrimanna & Chandimal for T-20, 2 overs each to settle down on the wicket 6 overs gone.. perhaps Mathews too will waste few balls poor Thisara is there to sacrifice his wicket due to bad run rate... Kapu is a good player he will make runs or get out soon this is T-20 friends not 50 overs game.. Anyway you will see next IPL how many SL players get chance to play.. I bet you not more than 4 batsman these lousy runner ball players will not entertain the game at all....

  • shajw on August 24, 2012, 5:58 GMT

A very good squad. My starting XI would be: Dilshan, Mahela, Sanga, Chandimal, Angelo, Jeevan, Thissara, Eranga, Malinga, Ajantha, Dananjaya.

  • paps123 on August 24, 2012, 5:36 GMT

They should have gone for Kapugedera in place of Chandimal. He is one guy who can hit big shots and thats what is required inT20. I am not concerned about Chandimal's form but he is not a T20 player at this stage. Sri lankan middle order does not need solid batsman, they need someone who can tonk the ball like Thisara can. Remember Kapugedeara's 6 of Nehra in the last over in the last T20. In such matches all you need is a quick 25 which he is capable of. Also think Sri Lanka are having 1 spinner too many in the squad unless they prepare poor turning pitches and the tournament becomes a contest between sub continent teams only. Hope that is not the case.

  • on August 24, 2012, 5:35 GMT

without Kapu It looks like no hard hitter in the team but conditions in Hambanthota may caused this decision to pick thirimanne

  • jayaboy on August 24, 2012, 5:33 GMT

i think when it comes to the t20,kapugedara is a useful player than chandimal or even thirimanne.its no use of having a player who had a SR of 115 in at 6

  • tdslbuwa on August 24, 2012, 5:25 GMT

  • Fast_Track_Bully on August 24, 2012, 4:40 GMT

well, selecting a player directly to WC based on club performance is not good. The quality of the opposition and pressure of the game is different at international game. If he got a below average performance, it may threaten his career too. Anyway, all the best!

  • acnipuna on August 24, 2012, 4:31 GMT

Bunny 09, are u mad Upul tharanga will get 30 ball 40 odd with his very poor fielding without big hits but thirimanne is package with every thing

  • on August 24, 2012, 4:26 GMT

How come this Akila Dhanjaya was not in the under 19 tour to OZ you know why? its all about you know whom in the selectors. the current 19 team is full of relatives of the SLC selection comittee members. or friends sons. obviously this guy is talented no doubt,I wish him all the best. also Thanks for not selecting KAPU, CHAMRA SILVA AND DILHARAKA.

  • burner1985 on August 24, 2012, 4:20 GMT

It's surprising how all the Kapu fans get worked up after just one good innings. If that's the case Tharanga along with half the domestic teams should be in the squad. And people just keep talking about one innings he had against India out of over 100 knocks. Though I'm critical of Akila's selection, I hope he proves me wrong as we could sure use another good spinner. But for Munaweera it sends out a bad message as he has don't anything great in the SLPL and was not even in the 30 man squad.

  • on August 24, 2012, 4:14 GMT

Kapugedara should have been selected in place of herath.... we don't need so many spin options.this is t20 n why herath????? squad is great but would have been awesome if kapu was in it.

  • anver777 on August 24, 2012, 4:13 GMT

No real surprise for SL fans !!!!! 18 year old Dhananjaya should be there, specially after his superb performances in the ongoing SLPL....... surely he's gonna puzzle few batsmen in WCT20 !!! This lad will be another Narine in the international scene in the future !!!!!!

  • on August 24, 2012, 4:06 GMT

Dananjaya, 18, had never played professional cricket prior to the SLPL, nor was he picked for the U-19 side currently competing in the World Cup in Australia. He had been selected in the preliminary 30-man squad solely on the recommendation of captain Mahela Jayawardene, who had faced him at Sri Lanka's net session. Dananjaya has taken seven wickets at the SLPL, at an average of 11 and an economy rate of 4.81.

    Well Done Mahela ..................

  • QingdaoXI on August 24, 2012, 3:27 GMT

Sorry Sri Lanka made mistake by selecting this old horses Dishan, Mahela, Sanga and Herath, this cup is going to be held at home and at present they are playing SLPL, they would have choosen best young blood and given a chance for them. They would have played better than this lot under the captaincy of Mattews.

I have only two doubts Chandimal's recent performance and rangana herath t20 career.Sachithara is far better than rangana at the moment.ANYWAY GOOD SELECTION. THANKS YOU SELECTION COMMITTEE.

  • on August 24, 2012, 2:12 GMT

mahela & co definitely will struggle when selecting final 11 out of this 15. Kula vs Eranga, Dhanjaya vs Mendis. now mahela or munaweera the opener?consistent thirimanne vs hard hitting jeewan Mendis? Can they forget Rangana Herath easily with his remarkable economy in vital periods? Hope Mahela and Ford face this.

  • on August 24, 2012, 1:57 GMT

    good selection at the end

  • on August 24, 2012, 1:17 GMT

@jackthelad sour grapes I see. You obviously found the need to comment. Making blanket statements about sub continent cricket just shows off your lack of knowledge about anything cricket. Yes your team is consistent. Consistent at choking. Your South African team couldn't produce a decent spinner for since you started playing cricket. So you borrowed a Pakistani. Does it hurt to see him jump up to the run up? Sucks to be you then. Where are Hashim Amla's origins from? I know this thing with being the best of the world is a first for you and your country. Unlike your team all sub continent teams know how it feels to be World Champions. No alarms here. Don't worry. We don't need big stars in SLPL. It meant to develop local talent. But then again even at this stage it has better quality cricket than your country's excuse for a T20 league.

@Srilanka Cwc Champions: No player is forced to take part in IPL, its only after player shows interest he is sent to auction & if this lad is not interested in playing IPL, he could very well stay away from it. No one is forcing him to play in IPL. For christ sake stop whining about IPL & start thinking about SLPL, u have not a league of your own.

  • jackthelad on August 23, 2012, 21:01 GMT

Chamath Arts - South Africa are a good team, and firing at the moment. India - Pakistan ... excuse me? Barely also-rans at this time. India rely on their pitches (ah - so did England, and SA stuffed them comprehensively) - Pakistan are wandering minstrels who show up when, and if, they show up. The comments from subcontinental 'cricket fans' on this site never cease to astonish me by their lack of any analysis or vision ( oh ... much like their cricket teams, then, eh?).

  • jackthelad on August 23, 2012, 20:43 GMT

Doesn't it ring alarm bells that almost every one of the 'super duper' foreign stars slated to play in this nonsense either pulled out or have left early? This country couldn't organise the proverbial brewery-fest, let alone anything serious.

  • Exmaxer123 on August 23, 2012, 20:22 GMT

well dne selectors.. u have done a great job with selection.. i am not wrrng about KAPU because he had too many chances to show his colors in the international arena.but he failed again and again. this is the perfect side for T20 world cup. Dilshan Munaweera is a great young talented player like SANATH and DILI. i think he will be a good opener for SL. cz i have seen his ability since his school ages. MUNE congratz for a bright future.. and also good to see akila dhananjaya in the team..

finally GOOD LUCK SRI LANKANS for give a great victory to your MOTHER SRI LANKA

  • SLMaster on August 23, 2012, 20:03 GMT

What is this thing with in favor of KAPU and hatred with Lahiru & Chandimal. Those latter two are good and futher of SL. KAPU had many chances and need to prove a lot (I mean lot more) to get in to the side. Overall great selection. My recommendation is resting some because of the amount of cricket.

  • on August 23, 2012, 20:01 GMT

chandimal has failed in his last t20s and odis. so i think, he should not be in playing 11. thirimanna is a better batsman than chandimal, as he knows to score as soon as he comes to bat. it seems like chandimal plays well in overseas.

  • on August 23, 2012, 19:54 GMT

    good selection very balance squad my playing 11 1.Dilshan 2.Munaweera 3. Mahela 4. Sanga 5. Thirimanne 6. Angelo 7. Thisara 8. Kulasekara 9. Malinga 10. Ajantha 11. Akila

  • Vibhanu on August 23, 2012, 19:33 GMT

seriously dude.Chandimal and Thirimanne in playing 11.Only for fielding I think.

  • amilag on August 23, 2012, 19:24 GMT

All of a sudden SL selectors are in a difficult task to select 15 men. Picking 11 be even harder. SLPL is totally responsible for this mess!!!

  • SLWATERBOY on August 23, 2012, 19:10 GMT

Selectors and Mahela, you all have done a great job by selecting Dilshan Munaweera. He is a perfect opener for T-20s and ODIs. I have been following him up since long time and he should have been given opportunity way before now. This guy has lot of confidence and when he hit the ball, it stays hit all the way! He is young and he needs some guidance on how to build up an innings. MJ you can do that, please transfer some of your knowledge to him. With proper guidance, Munaweera can be another Sewag! He will be a guy who can open for SL in T20 and ODI's and then tear apart any bowling line up early. Like Sana used to do for us and now T.M. Dilshan is doing for us in his style. Since Dilshan is at 34, Munaweera can be our next Dilshan by the time T.M. Dishan is retiring. So Good Job at the end and all the best for our TEAM!!!

  • DwightR on August 23, 2012, 18:46 GMT

good to see youngsters on the squad, although i dont think they'll make the playing XI, I dont think its a good idea to have them debut in an international ICC tournament of this scale without some international caps behind em. It called "paying your dues". assuming Sanga n Nuwan are back from injury my XI- 1. Dilshan 2. Mahela 3. Sanga 4. Chadimal 5. Mathews 6. Perera 7. Kulasekara 8. Malinga 9. Herath 10. A.Mendis 11. Eranga

  • Htc-Android on August 23, 2012, 18:28 GMT

good selection. my team 1.Dilshan 2.Munaweera 3.Mahela 4.chandi 5.sanga 6.mathews 7.perera 8.kula/Eranga 9.Malinga 10.A.mendis 11.dhananjaya. Jeewan mendis unlucky to miss out but no choice, we have to pick the best and balanced team. the reason why i picked chandi bcoz he is an attacking batsmen and more suitable than thirimanne. sanga should bat at No.5 in case if there is any collapse he can save the team.

  • DilumSL on August 23, 2012, 18:25 GMT

OK Question for the people who are happy to see kapu not in the team. please name a another young player who has done well in SLPL?? Lahiru n chandimal are our future they deserve a chance but chandimal is not in good form and sending Lahiru in 6 or 7 is a huge waste.BTW what is the use of SLPL when the players who plays well didn't get a chance.

  • on August 23, 2012, 18:21 GMT

thirmanne should be replaced with tharanga....eranga should be replaced with kapugedra....other than that good selection...sri lanka should play all three spineers in all the game except with asian countries.....gud luck sri lanka

  • on August 23, 2012, 18:20 GMT

As a Pakistani, I've seen this guy and he is a really nice spinner. He has good lines and lengths, gets turn and bowls a huge variety of off spinner, leg spinner, top spinner, googly it's just crazy.

Mendis won't do anything he has his carrom ball but he's inaccurate and gives a lot of easy hits. His deliveries also do not turn that much so he can be played like a medium pacer instead of as a spinner,

  • on August 23, 2012, 17:54 GMT

good selection , now for the perfect playin 11, this T20 WC gonna be real tough for the lankan lions as india , pakistan , saffers ... are in full throtle

  • on August 23, 2012, 17:51 GMT

good selection my 5 will be 1.Dilshan,2.Munaweera,3.Mahela,4.Thirimanne,5.Sanga,6.Mathews,7.Thisara,8.Jeevan,9.Kulasekara,10.Malinga,11.Ajantha

  • Skilled90 on August 23, 2012, 17:44 GMT

Guys,i know chandimal has not been performing well, but in this team selection the logical explanation is he has been chosen as a back up keeper for sanga, ofcourse dilshan can keep but having dilshan field is more productive,if you look at the selection in this perspective it seems quite the good one,and quite exciting and new lol

  • Udendra on August 23, 2012, 17:24 GMT

I think Chandimal, Thirimanne are not good T20 players.

  • Galle_Rocks on August 23, 2012, 17:17 GMT

Chandimal definitely needs some practise to correct his techniques , senanayaka should have been better tan rangana hearth , sena is a great fielder

  • on August 23, 2012, 17:14 GMT

kapugedara should in instead of chandimal, except that this is a very good selection...

  • on August 23, 2012, 17:14 GMT

Congratulations Akila. You Deserve It . Good Job Mahela!

  • Cricket_Geek on August 23, 2012, 17:11 GMT

Not sure why Herath is not favoured by many here. He has been Sri Lanka's best spinner in all formats. He spent most of his early years under Murali's shadow. In most Twenty20 games rarely is his economy over 5 runes per over. Granted he is not a gr8 fielder. He is a decent bat & can hit the ball hard & clear the filed if he wants to. He still has a couple of yrs of good cricket left. His selection is good. I am actually waiting to see how Mendis performs. He has been blowing hot & cold for sometime now. This is his chance to step up. Again the batting seems to be over reliant on Dilshan, Sanga & Mahela. I am waiting to see how Thirimanne & Jeevan Mendis perform. They had a good series against India. But this a different ball game as other teams have much stronger bowling attacks than India

  • 3rd_man on August 23, 2012, 17:10 GMT

Surprise selection Munaweera . He can hit the ball style remind me bit of Sewag. He is confident young man too. he can handle media. my only problem is after getting starts he could not convert them to big scores. his first class average 31.67 shows that. but he got very impressive strike rate. but I don't see why he cant improve. he needs to know how to build an inning. singles are very important. not trying to hit every ball to boundary. Disappointing with B.Rajapaksha. many expected lot from him, but he seems to be lost it. looks bit of heavy for his age. wonder whats going on. but his strokes remind me bit of Lara. hope somebody there for him to improve his game. Angelo Perera another good talent unfortunately he missed out. for me he is a very good talent. he can be someone very consistent and who can hit the ball straight. I don't mind kapugedara's exclusion, cos he should show consistency as a batsman. he got the talent by i feel he doesn't know how to develop a batting innings.

  • cravin on August 23, 2012, 17:09 GMT

Glad to youngsters got opportunities. But this team is missing Kapugadare & Maharoof. Kapu & Maharoof are real match winners when comes to t20, we saw last t20 wc semis. Kapugadare should play ahead of MAHELA,Chandimal, Thirimanna etc these players cannot even clear 30 yard circle when situation demand. Raw talent is missing sineour kabbos and accumulators play all test, odi & t20. That's why we cannot win a series (The reason we won a series aginst PAk, because they bat poorly and Perera & Mathews gem) after Arajuna & Aravinda left the team.

  • on August 23, 2012, 17:06 GMT

  • senna25 on August 23, 2012, 17:01 GMT

Big disfavor for Kapugedera. He was never given a long enough stint. In the series in Australia he was flown in for the last game. The recent series in Sri lanka he was selected for one match

  • on August 23, 2012, 16:27 GMT

good team selection. but chandi not deserve the place. senanayake could have been a better choice to herath. my playing 11- dilshan, munaweera, mahela, sangakkara, mathews, thirimanna, thisara, jeewan, ,kulasekara, malinga, medis/dhananjaya.

  • on August 23, 2012, 16:14 GMT

Sri Lanka have a very tough group must never take Zimbabwe lightly because they beated both Bangladesh and South Africa especially in the final comprehensively.

  • Karnain on August 23, 2012, 16:12 GMT

Great selection after a long time. Nice to see Akila Dananjaya, Shaminda Eranga & Dilshan Munaweera in the team. Even better to hear Upul Tharanga, Isuru Udana and Dilhara Fernando is not included. Only worry for me is the way Anjelo Mathews approaches the innings (playing so many dot balls first-up). Hope Sanga & Kula recovers in time otherwise Upul & Udana will be selected again as replacements. Also believe that Thisara Perera should bat high up in the order since he has proved that he can play longer innings now. Hope the weather god will be kind and rain will stay away. All the best!! CHEERS!!!

  • axe_hay on August 23, 2012, 16:07 GMT

Has anybody heard of Roshan Jayatissa ?? He has amazing domestic stats ?? The selectors could have tried him as the next mystery spinner. And as usual youngsters like Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Angelo Perera get ignored.

  • on August 23, 2012, 15:59 GMT

Thank god selectors didn't get fooled by one Kapugedara innings. He had enough and more chances & each one was wasted. Herath shouldn't have been selected. Prasanna or Sachithra would have been a better option.

  • A.N.C.P on August 23, 2012, 15:49 GMT

hey guys.... stop asking about KAPU.....!!!! i think he has got enough chances to proof him self but he failed, i think now the time for try something new and get some youngsters in the team. so i think the silection is really good this time... give it a go and see.... rather than depending on Sanga and Mahela all the time. All the best for the boys....

  • on August 23, 2012, 15:48 GMT

munaweera is a better selection, he should play instead of chandi & thiri

  • Sinhaya on August 23, 2012, 15:44 GMT

@counterstrike1.6, thanks for your wishes but I disagree that Ajantha is better than Herath. At least in tests, Herath is our main bowler. In T20s Ajantha may be different but since 2009 Mendis has been sliding backwards. I hope Dhananjaya will impress and be our future Murali.

  • boundryhiter46 on August 23, 2012, 15:44 GMT

  • deshc on August 23, 2012, 15:37 GMT

Even now "Kapu" should need to include this squad. He is a genuine match winner than Thirimanne or Chandimal.

  • SLMaster on August 23, 2012, 15:26 GMT

Good selection, but should be given more rest to top players (i.e. Mahela, Sanga, Lasith, Thisara etc.). They are playing non-stop for sometime now. The pick from SLPL is really great.

  • Balumekka on August 23, 2012, 15:25 GMT

  • Tusker17 on August 23, 2012, 15:06 GMT

Im not too sure about Mendis. That is Ajantha and Eranga. Both havent done anything spectacular in the SLPL. Senanayake would have been a better choice. Instead of playing a seamer in Eranga we should have looked to fortify our slow bowling options. Especially when there is Mathews and Perera to open with the new cherry. We arent playing in Oz or SA.

Anyway, lets see where we stand in about 45 days!

  • Rasika99 on August 23, 2012, 15:00 GMT

A player cannot be measured by a single good inning he played. Kapu played superbly last match against BCD. But to be a good national player, consistency should be there. Kapu has got more than enough opportunities than anybody in SL side and could not provide his best to the team. So its reasonable to drop him. I think couple of young batsmen should be include to the side focusing next world cup in 2015.

  • jerryman on August 23, 2012, 14:51 GMT

nice to see ajanta mendis back... chandimal or mahela shud open with dilshan.. and maybe the debutant akila can partner ajanta in the spin team and jeevan /dilshan can bowl an over each if needed .. Good luck SL and all teams..hope it will be an exciting series..

  • SL_Boy on August 23, 2012, 14:43 GMT

SLPL rock's Excellent, already really hard to pick 15, I think Chandimal should not be in T20, he is so slow … time will prove.

  • Dank on August 23, 2012, 14:43 GMT

For the first time in SL Cricket history after 1996 we are having a proper squad. regardless of 50 over format performances I think Kapu is a better player in T20s and he deserves a chance. Herath for T20 is not ideal but can live with this. If at all there is a change I'll have Kapu in and Herath out

  • SLfan on August 23, 2012, 14:34 GMT

I normally don't like De Mel and co. because of what he did to Marvan Atapattu. But have to admit that this is a (surprisingly) perfect selection from the selectors. I was indeed surprised to see that this time they have selected the best possible 15 players. Normally this don't happen in Sri Lanka because selectors are very capable of messing up the things. So, good job !

  • Dhushan on August 23, 2012, 14:31 GMT

Dear Lord, I thank you for this day for NOT including Chamara Kapugedara & Dilhara Fernando in the SL squad for the T20 World Cup. Amen!

  • on August 23, 2012, 14:30 GMT

nice to see Ajantha Mendis back in the side.but where is Maharoof,Kapu & Sachithra.specially Maharoof can hit the ball hard and even ball.

  • Sobat on August 23, 2012, 14:23 GMT

whats so big about kapu??? im sure if i play the amount of matchers he had played even i could have played a knock like he did in SLPL.... pls include me too... give me 100 games sure i will make a 50 before the 100th match... he he he ae madai......

  • on August 23, 2012, 14:21 GMT

Kapu should be there instead of Thirimanna or even Chandimal. Its all to do with roles in the team. Its useless of Thirimanna to come at 6 and have a strike rate of 112. Kapu can do alot better there even though he isn't as consistent as Thirimanna. Plus, SL have guys already to do what Thirimanna offers to the team which is to anchor the innings.

  • erangakavi on August 23, 2012, 14:21 GMT

Great to see this.. should be the best team for T20 worldcup! My team is Dilshan & Munaweera,Sanga,Mahela,Chandimal, Angelo,Thisara,Kula,Ajantha,Malinga,Akila/ Jeevan

  • on August 23, 2012, 14:20 GMT

why Herath ? he can't take more than one wicket . in fact, he is not fit as well as not good fielder .. .:(

  • TheRedox on August 23, 2012, 14:20 GMT

It's funny how some people want Kapu back in team after just one good performance.Grow up.People like Thiri and Chandimal deserve more chances. And as per Sanga,he's got the highest average for SLankan in T20.So Sanga should somehow have to feature in final eleven.

  • on August 23, 2012, 14:15 GMT

why do they selected Jeewan Medies . he can't hit the ball outside. he can hit only one six and eats all the ball. kapu is better than him .. bad selection ...:(

  • on August 23, 2012, 14:09 GMT

kapugedera scored 135 runs in slpl with average of 38..but chandimal scored just 34..chandimal not suitable for t20's..also he cant hit big sixers...i think inform kapugedera is a good option for out of form chandimal..otherwise this is the best squad for world cup.

  • on August 23, 2012, 13:55 GMT

i belive KAPU should be a automatic choice for 20/20 cricket he is much better than Tirimanne when its comes to this format . people who saw his aggrasive innings few days ago his 39 ball 70 runs with 5 six will agree with me . also the home conditions will suits him .. who can forget in last 20/20 world cup in west indies he single handedly won the match aganst INDIA by hitting a last ball six

  • shash24 on August 23, 2012, 13:48 GMT

Superb selection. But kapu is a good option than chandimal as he was not in a good form. I think TM Dilshan nd Munaweera should open. Mahela in the middle makes batting line up stonger. Thisara also consider as a batting all rounder in this format becaouse he will not able to bowl his 4 overs.

    My Final XI, 01. D Munaweera 02. T Dilshan 03. M Jayawardene 04. K Sangakkara 05. A Mathews 06. J Mendis 07. T Perera 08. N Kulasekara 09. R Herath 10. L Malinga 11. A Dhananjaya

  • on August 23, 2012, 13:04 GMT

looks a ok squad on the outside but have to wait and see how they fare.. but I feel they are one spinner too many (Akila, Ajantha, Jeevan, Herath). Should have opted for one more batsman (probably replacing Herath) like Tharanga, Angelo Perera, even Kapugedara, etc.

  • tdslbuwa on August 23, 2012, 13:00 GMT

Dilshan Munaweera and Akila should be in playing eleven.Mahela can go to no 4 spot and Dilshan and Munaweera should open batting.Batting order should be Dilshan,Munaweera,Sanga,Mahela,Angelo,Thisara,Jeevan/Chandimal,Kula/Shaminda,Herath,Malinga,Akila. Jeevan can ball and play at 7.But Chandimal should bat in top 4 .So I prefer Jeevan over Chandimal. This is a good squad because every one is fighting for a spot in playing 11 .Good luck SL.....

Awesome team... but given the kapu n upul should have been picked instead of Chandi n Lahiru.. (not performed much in T20's) ... So keen to watch Ajantha n Akila in action... hope both will get picked for playing 11 at least for 1 match.. Good Luck Lions... !!!

  • hasaansl on August 23, 2012, 12:04 GMT

    1. Mahela Jayawardene 2. Tillakaratne Dilshan 3. Kumar Sangakkara 4. Dinesh Chandimal 5. Lahiru Thirimanne 6. Angelo Mathews 7. Jeevan Mendis 8. Thisara Perera, 9. Nuwan Kulasekara 10. Lasith Malinga 11. Akila Dhanajaya

  • satish619chandar on August 23, 2012, 12:04 GMT

Mendis is always a factor in home conditions.. Still remember how well he bowled against Aussies in T20 series last time.. Could still be a surprise element.. Overall, they got a decent team with excellent all rounders in Perera, Mathews and Kulasekara. Eranga coupled with Dhananjeya is a good bunch of young talent too. Picking the right 11 will be the toughest job for them. Everyone looks to deserve a chance to play.. Only Munaweera looks certain to be benched..

no matter which teams selects whom.. WI is gonna win the cup.

after a long lay off i am seeing SL selectors picking up the perfect squad for a world cup. any team sans Chamara Kapugedera, Chamara Silva, Dilhara Fernando are good enough for me. i would love to see the 02 Dilshan's opening the batting and Mahela coming in at 3. Chandimal is perfect at 4. Sanga will warrant a place in the team if he can come in at 5 and blast a quick fire 20 or 30 at a strike rate of more than 120. if not Thirimanne should play. 6,7 & 8 are automatic selections with Mathews, Jeevan Mendis & Thissara claiming the spots. 9,10,& 11 should include Herath/Malinga and Kulasekera/Eranga or Mendis/Dananjaya....bowling looks very strong with lot of variety & batting will be strenghthened with Munaweera & Jeevan M. HOPE WE CAN WIN THE T20.

  • on August 23, 2012, 11:58 GMT

A well balanced really good squad. 6 specialist batsmen, 3 all rounders, 3 Fast bowlers & 3 spin bowlers. This is the best squad that Sri Lanka can put on field. This squad has the potential to win the World Cup.

  • Sthilanka on August 23, 2012, 11:57 GMT

the best squad has picked .but i think senanayake would have been a better choise than dananjaya. but may be 18 year old will prove i'm wrong.who knows?

  • burner1985 on August 23, 2012, 11:53 GMT

As usual, Sri Lankan selectors had to plug in a couple of players out of nowhere to create some controversy. Akila Dananjaya has played only 4 first classes matches and all of them were in SLPL. Munaweera was not even in the 30 man squad and has not done anything spectacular so far. What a load of crap.

  • amilag on August 23, 2012, 11:53 GMT

Excellent selection! SLPL with its very short stay seems to have contributed to selection a lot. The team looks very strong and picking 11 player for a game will be so difficult. SL have every chance of winning this world cup! good luck!

  • nmdasaya on August 23, 2012, 11:52 GMT

what a suprise! never thought munaweera will make it throuh!

  • on August 23, 2012, 11:49 GMT

About time Mendis received some recoginion. VVS Laxman was a wonderful player of spin yet was dismissed more by Mendis than any other spinner. Mendis is the best hope for spin in the Test team also.

  • Dian007 on August 23, 2012, 11:46 GMT

Very poor selection, no KAPUGEDERA means no T20, he is better than players like chandi, lahiru, jeewan in terms of T20. who is capable of hitting 5 sixes solely, other than players like Angie, Tissara and Mahela. no one else, Kapu is the best hard hitting batsman for Sri Lanka.

NO KAPU NO T20 for Sri Lanka, not worth watching.

  • on August 23, 2012, 11:46 GMT

Kapugedara should be in squad. Chandimal isn't suitable for T20. So, Kapu should get chance ahead of Chandimal. Picking of Dilshan Munaweera is great decision, he is great opener and has fine touch of willow and leather...this is great squad and selectors have done good job..other than Chandimal case..

  • Uppercut07 on August 23, 2012, 11:46 GMT

For once SL selectors 've got it right! Hopefully sanga & kulasekara will recover in time for da 1st game

  • Mahaanama on August 23, 2012, 11:43 GMT

I'm impressed with this selection & so glad to see both Kapugedara & Tharanga are not around any more :). Playing XI should be: 1) T.M. Dilshan, 2)Dilshan Munaweera, 3)Mahela, 4)Sangakkara, 5)Thisara, 6)Mathews, 7)Thirimanne/Jeevan, 8)Kulasekara, 9)Malinga, 10)Herath, 11)Akila Dhanajaya/ Eranga/Ajantha Mendis. Chandimal shouldn't be in first XI due to his recent poor form and definitely Thisara Perera should bat up in the order. Sending Thisara down the order is wasting his talent because he doesn't have enough time to settle down and go for big shots when he has left only 3-4 overs to bat. Congrats Sri Lanka!!!!

  • on August 23, 2012, 11:42 GMT

As much as I adore Sanga and rate him as one of the Test best batsman in the world, him remaining injured could be a blessing for Sri Lanka. He has been terrible in T20s for a long while now. His showings in IPL have been consistently poor the past 2-3 seasons. He takes about 20 balls to score 10-15 runs and, more often than not, gets out trying to up the tempo. Thilan has shown he has the ability, so perhaps giving him a go instead may be the right way to go.

  • first_slip on August 23, 2012, 11:26 GMT

Chandimal and Thirimanna both in, but no Kapugedara, hilarious

  • on August 23, 2012, 11:22 GMT

It is a mistake by the selectors for not selecting Kapugedara. It is necessary to select players when they are in form and not otherwise.

  • on August 23, 2012, 11:18 GMT

Very strange! Kapugedera is not included. Why? Generally he is an automatic choice of the national selectors whether he gets runs or not.

  • WPDDESILVA on August 23, 2012, 11:17 GMT

Lord have Mercy !! Ami seeing things !!? I cannot see Kapugedara's name here !! Praise the Lord.

  • on August 23, 2012, 11:17 GMT

    my 11 will be 1,Mahela 2,Dilshan 3,Chandimal 4,Sangakkara 5,Mathews 6,J.Mendis 7,Perera 8,Kulasekara 9,Malinga 10,Herath 11,A.Mendis

  • on August 23, 2012, 11:16 GMT

What is the rationale behind selecting Ajantha Mendis. Though he picked up wickets he is clearly not up to the standard and same goes with Shaminda Eranga and Lahiru Thirimanne. I think Dinesh Chandimal deserves to be dropped. Jeevan Mendis is out of form as well.

Why not Kapugedara? I think he is getting his form back and he is certainly better than some of those included in the squad.

Good to see Akila Dhananjaya in the squad. I hope he will not be too exposed as in the case of Ajantha Mendis.

This is amazing team Srilanka have ever selected. I think this is looking very good to compete against the top team like West Indies. Go sril lanka..........

Happy for Ajantha. He deserves this. He is better than Herath any day. Good luck to him. I think, his good performances in SLPL waked SL selectors up. Good for SL. - Indian Fan.
