The Nagaland state government has built a new cricket stadium in Dimapur. The Sovima Cricket Stadium, built at a cost of Rs. 10.33 crores, is the second cricket ground in the north-east region of India after Guwahati in Assam.
"We are happy that finally our stadium is ready. I believe that cricket is going to go a long way because now we have good facilities," Athasie Angami, the head coach of the Nagaland Cricket Academy, told ANI.
The stadium, which took eight months to build, will allow young players to train in Nagaland, as opposed to having to travel to Guwahati and other places for matches and coaching camps.
"Now, our boys will not have to go out from Nagaland to practice. They can learn here and we will be able to better quality players from here," A Rehman, secretary, Nagaland Cricket Academy, said. "And hopefully more and more Naga boys will come out with flying colors in the field of cricket."
The stadium recently hosted a match between the Under-16 Dimapur district team and the Sovima Youth Cricket Club.

Oh I would love to go there and watch a match... I always dreamed of having a cricket stadium next to my house when I was in Tripura 12 years back..
Posted byThe pitch should have been designed for pace (Aussie/SA/Eng) style and then have matches - tests or even t20(I'd surely love a low-scoring tight game). This practice will help India avoid kine of embarrassments we have had recently a) 4-0 - Eng b)4-0 Aus c) Last 2 T-20 world cups, where in we were undone by the "short stuff".
Posted by Lovetesh on (May 28, 2012, 8:46 GMT)KKR should host couple of IPL games there as well. I tell you KKR has got the biggest reach in terms of geographic area now. From Chattisgarh, Orissa, WB, Bangladesh, to entire NE India is supporting KKR.
Posted by AKS286 on (May 28, 2012, 5:15 GMT)2 or 3 more stadiums are built in northeast region. it has a big advantage is that india can host test matches in summer season. climate is awesome. players will enjoy to bowl and bat for 5 days in NorthEast. bcoz rest are sooo hot.
Posted byKudos to the Nagaland Cricket Academy....I want to see a cricketer from there representing India someday! :)
Posted bygood news ...may be cricket can bind people together.
Posted byGood news. North East should get more sports infrastructure. They are very athletic people and can raise level of Indian sports
Posted by Nair_saab on (May 27, 2012, 14:40 GMT)Very srongly built are these guys and natural athletes. Any one from nagaland getting into the indian team (if), will surely be an added advantege on the feild.Good news , now each and every pard of india is having a cricket trainig facility. Hope many cricketrs from this region get a chance to perform at higher levels.
Posted byCricinfo can do better than to plug PR pieces. Tripura is a long standing Ranji team, only NE state other Assam with a first class status and its 30000 seat capacity stadium built in 1998 is featured in Cricinfo itself - http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/ground/57841.html is your own page. How lazy can you get if you say that nagaland stadium is the only one after Dimapur. Dont take your eyes of the ball! It is not cricket:)
Posted by serious-am-i on (May 27, 2012, 13:55 GMT)well down Nagas. Hopefully we could see some nice players rolling out of Nagaland team into Ranji and probably even go on to play for India.
