India's national selectors will meet on Tuesday in Mumbai to pick the squad for the five ODIs in New Zealand in January. On their just-concluded tour of South Africa, India lost two ODIs heavily while their bowlers conceded 301 in the washed-out third game. However, the selectors are not expected to tinker too much with the one-day unit, with the focus being on providing stability to the outfit in the run-up to the 2015 World Cup. Cheteshwar Pujara's Test displays in South Africa are likely to earn him a spot ahead of Yuvraj Singh, which is expected to be the only major change.

Yuvraj had undergone a strenuous fitness program in France and forced his way back into the side for the home limited-overs series against Australia In October following a string of big scores in List A cricket. His first innings on comeback was an unbeaten, match-winning 77 in the solitary Twenty20 in Rajkot but a torrid ODI series followed, in which he scraped 19 runs from four innings at an average of 4.75. Each time, he fell to a fast bowler, succumbing three times to the pace of Mitchell Johnson alone.

He did make a fifty in the following three-match home ODI series against West Indies, but struggled against Sunil Narine's offspin. At the Wanderers, he made a second-ball duck in his only innings in the South Africa ODIs.

Yuvraj's form in the occasional Ranji Trophy match he has played for Punjab has also been disappointing. He made 33 and 40 against Mumbai, 0 and 4 against Delhi and was out for 39 in the first innings of the ongoing game against Jharkhand.

Pujara, on the other hand, averaged 70 over the two Tests despite not being part of the ODI squad that had had a taste of South African conditions beforehand. Pujara has played only two ODIs compared to 17 Tests, and there have been calls for him to be given a bigger role in one-dayers, given his tight technique and the fact that the 2015 World Cup will be played in Australia and New Zealand.

Among the others, Mohit Sharma's place could be under scrutiny, after his lackluster display in the Wanderers ODI, where he went for 82 runs from ten overs.

It is not certain if the selectors will use the same meeting to choose the side for the two Tests in Auckland and Wellington that follow the one-dayers in New Zealand. If they do, there are unlikely to be major changes, with the batsmen doing reasonably well, barring the last day in Durban, and the fast bowlers carrying out heavy workloads.

yuvi is a good cricketer..he can play well on bouncy pitches..he brought three world cups for india.without yuvi we cant view the match...so yuvi is the best allrounder for india...

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 8:24 GMT)

If India can not find a pace bowling all rounder, for the time being, they should try both Ashwin and Jadeja as spin all rounders. There should be 3 other bowlers, 3 pacers/2 pacer + 1 specialist spinner based on conditions.

Yuvraj,Raina and Mohit out.Pujara,Rishi Dhawan and Pankaj in.

Posted by akashchandran on (December 31, 2013, 7:11 GMT)

Both Yuvraj and Raina deserve one more chance to show that they can/cannot play in foreign conditions. Pujara needs to come into the squad but it should be in place of Ambati Rayudu. With Rahane and Pujara as options it is unlikely that Rayudu will get a chance in the New Zealand ODI series. Therefore it shall be nice if he is allowed to play in the knock out stage of the Ranji Trophy and for the Tests he can be back in the squad.

I feel that if we are to groom Virat Kohli as the next Test captain, then he should be handed reins for the New Zealand tour, leading the One day side.. My XI - Shikar D/ Rohit Sharma/ Virat Kohli/Pujara/ Rahane/Dhoni/Jadeja/Ashwin/Shammi/Zaheer/Bhuvaneshwari Kumar Suresh Raina/Yuvraj have had a an extended run and unless they come with spectacular performances and consistently in the domestic circuit, they should not be considered at all..enough of Dhoni's nepotism!

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 6:59 GMT)

Nobody seems to have a problem with Ashwin in the ODI team.. I'd rather have him as my number 7 in my test team, playing four other bowlers and dropping Rohit Sharma.. Mishra would be my specialist spinner in the ODIs..

Regarding Yuvraj being a match winner on his day, I agree but sadly those days r over. For d ppl who claim him to b d fielder he once was, I wud say they were dreaming or not watching him field during recent matches. He was lethargic in d field and he is also dropping chances these days which is very unlikely of him. He was undoubtedly d reason for India winning last WC but honestly, cancer took d toll out of his body and he was not d player he used to be 3 yrs ago. HIs occasional heroics wid bat cannot cloud d failures he is undergoing and it is not jus d failure, it is d kind of failure that is even more disturbing to see. For a batsman who is 12 yrs old on Int exp, he simply is becoming a bunny for Fast bowlers. As all good things, his story has also come to an end.

Raina should also not be spared any longer if he remains consistent with his inconsistency. Regarding Varun Aaron, I think he was not fully tested for Int crckt yet. One good spell doesnt pave path for an Intl series.

@ Hardik : Agree with u mate. I have no doubt in my mind that pujara fare well in seaming friendly pitches but I am not so sure about his stroke play. If he was to play in PP's, I dont see him firing. This doesnt mean any disrespect to him, but honestly, this is a fact that should be taken into consideration. He is good in cutting d ball for 3rd man and playing square on off side. That kind of play is more suited for tests.

But on the hindside, Amla was also tagged only a test prospect early in his career and so was Trott. If they were successful in ODI's, I dont see any reason y Pujara cant. But rather I wud try him at d opening spot in d place of Rohit. It is extremely unfair for Rohit to be asked to move to middle order, specifically to no 4 given his recent heroic as an opener, but It is d best possible solution for the well being of the team if they want to make space for Pujara. I guess Rohit proved to b a reliable no 4 for MI and he was gifted with aggressive play aswel.

pankaj singh must get a chance in place of ishant sharma/umesh yadav/mohit sharma. out ofthese 3 umesh yadav looks completely out of touch after coming back from injury. varun aaron is also bowling well. but its better to allow him to play atleast 1 full ranji season before drafting into indian team.

Yuvi have served superbly in ODI for a decade dont think he is the same Yuvi now.Lets thank for his service all these years & move ahead. The trio of Kohli, Pujara & Rahane is Must both in Test & ODI. Team Batting should revolve around this 3.Better to give more opportunity for Rohit & Dhawan to get back their form. I dont think Raina deserves spot going by his current form, his weekness in foreign Pitches & more importantly he never been consistent through out his career. My Playing XI for ODI - Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli,Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Dhoni,JAdeja,Ashwin, Buvi, Shami ahamed & Umesh Yadav.

i dont know why your peoples are thinking the small areas. first of all we need a left hand fast bowlers (Zaheer/ Ashish/RPsing/Irfan). in that when u see last decade Ashish, Irfan and Zaheer performed well in consecutive series. So lets try this with RPsingh. Opening batsman we require Campir and Shikar compination. My team is Campir, Shikar, Pujara, Virat, youvraj, Jadeja,MSD, Bhuv, Harpajan Zaheer and RP singh. And Shami as alternate bowler and Rohit as alternate batsman and Rishi dhawan as alternate for youvraj if at all necessary alrounder.

I dont have hope with Aswin, Rohit and Vijay on internation matches. They are tigers in IPL not in overseas

Tests should be major concern for india.INdia will win the ODI series easily. Some new faces must be included in test squad considering future tours.Rishi dhawan,Pankaj singh and Baba Aparjith have performed well.Shikhar dhawan I'd best for ODIs but somebody else should be given chances in tests considering his present form and technique. My test XI will be:Vijay,Aparjith,Pujara, kohli,Rohit, rahane,Dhoni, jadeja,Dhawan,Pankaj singh and shami.Pankaj singh is better than ishant in every way.He is an inch or more taller, swings and seams better and is note accurate.Rishi Dhawan is also very accurate and swings and seams at brisk pace.He is good in rverse also.

@Krishn Verma - I like your choices except for the one on Yuvaraj, which I think is more emotional than rational a choice. Yuvi has served his time and iit is now clear that his health more than his age is his nemesis. Let us not flog him to a state of humiliation - which in my opinion has already happened at the Wanderers. I strongly support you/others who have voted for RISHI DHAWAN. It is time to blood this young fellow and give him as many opportunities as were given to Ishant and before him, to Nehra. I have a feeling he will pleasantly surprise many, including some skeptical selectors.

what about raina ranina in 25odi matchs total 260 runs

Posted by ssenthil on (December 31, 2013, 5:44 GMT)

So when we are going to drop the perennial under performer Dhoni and Ishant Sharma from the test teams? Time running high for Dhoni to be dropped from Tests permanently. come on Selectors, India need a better W/K batsman in overseas who can bat with tail and score runs unlike chickened Dhoni, who never able to score a fifty for a long time in tests at overseas.

Posted by dakshinap on (December 31, 2013, 5:40 GMT)

Sourab Tiwary should be select instead of Rohit Sharma. Because Rohit is struggling in the seaming condition. Sourab is scoring consistantly good runs in the difficult conditions(Ranji matches). ThenIshant Sharma & Monit Sharma is not good enough for the International level, They should be replace by Varun Aaron and Pankaj Singh. Then selectors please give chance to Rishi Dhawan, he is a quality Allrounder.

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 5:39 GMT)

Batting order looks quite settled except that one position of No. 4. Cheteshwar Pujara, saurabh tiwary, kedar jadhav are top contendors .Especially tiwary is a left hander and has great six hitting ability.Dhoni can come at 4 because he can bat at any position and stabilise the innings.Jadeja is working good as an all rounder in ODI's.Ashwin will grab the spinner's position.Shami will be spearhead of pace attack.Bhuvaneshwar will be brought back in attack.oUmesh Yadav, suryakant pradhan and Aaron may be considered for the third spot in pace attack ,especially pradhan, who is good with bat and exceptional with ball for orrisa .Just check his stats once.

Posted by ROXSPORT on (December 31, 2013, 5:25 GMT)

I would say Rohit Be-Sharma too needs to be dropped, once & for all. His temperament, more than his technique, have failed him & it is highly improbable at this late stage of his career (though not impossible, as we have witnessed with Ian Bell) that he can do enough to change that. He simply is not dedicated enough, what with the IPL riches coming all too easily to him. So, let him enjoy his IPL & forget about his being a part of the Indian team. Also, no Rayudu please. He hasn't done enough to justify being there. I would say Rishi Dhawan, Sandeep Sharma, Manpreet Juneja, Mandeep Singh should be looked at. We can invest in them as they have time on their side in which to repay our faith in them. Sadly, time has run out for Rohit & may not be there for Rayudu.

Posted by Ramesh_Joseph on (December 31, 2013, 5:18 GMT)

I hope selectors pick Varun Aaron as he is back from Injury and I really hope they drop the mediorcre Ishant sharma, but that seems unlikely since Dhoni supports him so much.

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 5:16 GMT)

Just hope Pujara gets selected in ODI. His style of batting suits overseas tracks and moreover WC will be played in Australia and NZ. He will be rock solid and could still score at a strike rate of 80 plus if not 100 plus. Hope he does not get treated like Dravid who was branded test material in his early days.

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 5:08 GMT)

Looking at 2015 wc India need to give chance to players who can play short balls at 140± with ease like kohli, Dhoni.. If you want to replace yuvraj Singh then there is no better player than Robin uthappa because he is equally talented match winner.. Uthappa for yuvraj, varun Aaron for mohit Sharma, pujara for rayudu or rahane

Posted by Karunk on (December 31, 2013, 5:02 GMT)

2015 world cup is in Australia & Newzealand and selectors will be making a big mistake, if they don't include Pujara in the ODI side. Except Pujara, Virat & Rahane, we saw how other flat track bullies fared in the recently concluded one day & test series in SA. 250+ runs in an ODI is a competitive score in Aus-Newzealand and we need batsmen like Pujara & Rahane to get that score. Indian selection team should not treat Pujara like how they treated Dravid who used to be there in ODI team while touring abroad and then make way for flat track bullies for ODI matches played in India. Yuvaraj must have regained his fitness after 6 months of training in France but his batting skill at international level against quality bowling has gone down further. He should not be in the ODI team.

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 4:46 GMT)

Pankaj Singh of Rajasthan will be very good choice ahead of Mohit Sharma & Please no zaheer Khan for the ODI. He is one of the worst fielder.

ODI team for NZ tour: 1.Dhawan 2.Rahane 3.Kohli 4.Pujara 5.Rohit 6. Dhoni 7. Jadeja 8.Ashwin 9.Bhuvi 10.Shami 11. Pankaj Singh12. Ishant 13. Raina 14.Rayudu 15.Yuvraj 16.Rishi Dhawan (All rounder)

Tests: 1.Dhawan 2. Vijay 3. Gambhir. 4.Pujara 5. Kohli 6.Rahane 7.Dhoni 8.A. Mishra 9.Zaheer 10. Shami 11. Bhuvi 12. Ishant 13. Rohit Sharma 14. R.Ashwin 15.Jiwanjot Singh/Sanju Samson 16. D Karthik (wk) if select 17.Rishi Dhawan.

I feel Rishi Dhawan should have been tried in SA, NZ tour will a perfect plateform to launch him as a Pace All rounder, he is form of his life in bowling and a decent batsman too..pick him for this tour plz..at least in ODIs..

Posted by kiran_ym on (December 31, 2013, 4:44 GMT)

Yuvraj on any day is a huge bonus for any oneday side.. I agree he is going through a lean patch but its time for bcci to back him up. Everyone in present india team has got adequate chances. It's yuvi turn now. Lets support him and i'm sure he will come out with flying colours. He is a true match winner and one of our aces for next world cup 2015.. If its pujara for yuvraj then it has to be rahane for raina.. But on any day Yuvraj is far better than our weak lower middle order batsmenand the tail followed by sir Jadeja is very weak as we witnessed in SA..

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 4:37 GMT)

I believe Pujara definitely deserves a chance in ODIs, often people forget that ODIs exposure abroad is also getting acclimatized to their conditions. Grooming Pujara will definitely stabilize our middle order. At the cost of Yuvi remains a debate. When Yuvi is on fire, he's the most dangerous batsman. When he struggles, the middle order could be put under a lot of pressure. In my opinion, Yuvi needs to work on his game before he comes out stronger before the WC, i still feel Yuvi will play an important role in 2015 WC. So won't be a bad idea to drop Yuvi.

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 4:35 GMT)

Pujara and Rahane should be in the team to bring stability in batting. Playing on fast paced pitches is no picnic and these two have proved themselves on such pitches time and again!

>>"ZAK into ODI"?

Are you kidding? In SA, ZAK was bowling slower than Dhoni. It's time for ZAK to retire.

>>"There are unlikely to be major changes, with the batsmen doing reasonably well, barring the last day in Durban, and the fast bowlers carrying out heavy workloads."

So it is enough if fast bowlers carry out heavy workloads, no need for them to actually take wickets?

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 3:27 GMT)

Pujara is a very balanced and careful batsman. We need to give him as much experience as we can. Good bats men are made some time. For yuvraj one have to look at Rohit. Currently he has gone backwards. For a young man of his age he has no fire in him.Perhaps little rest and soul searching will do him some good.

Posted by loke_cricfan on (December 31, 2013, 3:10 GMT)

CP should be in the team, he can fill the role of RD. Yuvraj should not be dropped, he is a big match player.

I think Pankaj Sharma Should get a chance insyead of Mohit Sharma..with the Green Pitches in NZ..he will be letha Weapon for indian bowling attack..

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 2:47 GMT)

Pujara is best choice. he showed his class and character in test. He can prove as a good middle order batsman in ODI.

Posted by Sanath.Shenoy on (December 31, 2013, 2:45 GMT)

i think yuvi merits a place ahead of raina. better bowler and clean striker when required(an ideal num 6 with dhoni at 5). raina is a touch better fielder but i think india has good enf fielders in to be placed in key position. Also Zaheer mush be back in place of mohit. Experience in death bowling will be required (How he foxed morkel with the yorker in 1st test). unless dhoni goes for CSK approaach and put in both Mohit and Raina in the team..... :(

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 2:39 GMT)

It will be interesting to see where and how Pujara fits in. The Indian ODI top 3 cannot be tinkered right now. So can Pujara be slotted at number 4? Coming in at 20/2 is his game but is he comfortable with coming in at 150/2 at 30 overs? Well we have never seen him play those situations so will be interesting to see. Anyone else who is grabbing for attention at no. 4/5? Thoughts people.

Posted by wapuser on (December 31, 2013, 2:37 GMT)

Gautam gambhir should be bring in to indian national team instead of shikhar dhawan

Good Decision to bring Pujara to Stabilise batting Collapse.. Don't want to see another batting collapse.. I bought tickets for Napier, Hamilton and Auckland matches and hopefully will get value for my money..

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 1:34 GMT)

No more deserving player than Pujara to cement a stable no 4 spot. And no more deserving (of a drop) player than Yuvraj.

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 1:19 GMT)

Thats exactly what I was waiting Yuvraj needs to work in his game if he cluldnt face pace and bounce on flat tracks he not going to stand a chance on green tracks at all. Pujara has done enough hardwork to prove himself as a quality batsmen probably the best amongst all. if he lives upto his reputation in the odi's this guy is the next sachin we are all waiting along with kohli..They will form a deadly pair agianst all the pacers.

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 1:17 GMT)

@Cricfever_PM Zak in ODI. R u serious??? He should have not even played the tests. His batting lacks attittude, his run lacked purpose. It was so bad that Dhoni did not even use him in the second innings. Good to see selectors decided to drop Yuvraj as he is past his prime. Zak should also be dropped and should not be considered for the NZ tests.

Posted by Naresh28 on (December 31, 2013, 0:53 GMT)

Pujara in Odi's should be a priority. Dhawan and Rohit should only play ODi's. They dont have the temperament for TESTS. Time to see how I Pandey does as a pacer. Raina and Dhoni should only be played in ODi's. I would still give Yuvi a chance in ODi's.Dinesh Karthik should play in TESTS. Gambhir should be given a slot in Tests.

if Yuvraj gets dropped, Raina should also be dropped so should ineffective Ashwin....time to recall Bhajji & Zak in ODI team

ii think bowling is worried bat India we should have a bowling coach who can guide young bowlers I don't know why selectors forgot Balaji.

Pujara, Rahane, Manoj Tiwary or Stuart Binny are the Best Options to Replace Yuvraj Singh in the ODI Squad....

Posted by   on (December 31, 2013, 0:14 GMT)

Ashwin should make way for off-spinning allrounder Jalaj Saxena. Raina will have to prove himself on this trip or lose his place to Aparajith. Exciting batsman Samson should go to NZ for experience. Pankaj Singh for Mohit Sharma.

Time for VARUN AARON to come back to the Indian ODI squad. Looking good again, make it happen BCCI

Posted by   on (December 30, 2013, 22:53 GMT)

Yuvraj Singh was man of the series and helped India win the World Cup. On current form he should be dropped for the NZ Tour as India will travel with Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayadu. But please don't forget Yuvraj Singh is a big match player. He has the experience. He has been there and done that! In a pressure cooker scenario of a crucial World Cup tie, he is exactly the man I want at the crease. Also he is an accompolished bowler and brilliant fielder. I am pretty sure some fans will trash him but I hope the above is a reminder.

Posted by Nampally on (December 30, 2013, 22:34 GMT)

I have been pleading for the past 2 years to get Pujara in ODI's simply because India needs Kohli & Pujara to give Indian batting a backbone. Dhoni in his crazy frenzy tried Yuvraj & Raina at #4 right when Pujara is staring at his face in SA. It is like trying to fit a square peg in the round hole. If Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli , Rahane, Raina/Rohit are the top 5, India has good batting strength in ODI's. Dhoni at #6 followed by 5 bowlers- Ashwin, Jadeja, + 3 seamers complete the XI. It is unfortunate that Rohit's indifferent form justifies dropping him after his fine batting in India. He does not seem to relish green pitches. As for Yuvraj, he is all at sea Vs. Pace. It is hard to believe Yuvraj hit 24 runs of Broad in an ODI! The Indian selectors also need to groom Pujara & kohli for captaining the Test & ODI teams. Dhoni lack of rationale in XI selection & his seat of the pant decisions leave lot to be desired. India lost a winnable Test series in SA due to numerous Dhoni's Follies!

There are 3 potentially future players we have in mind. First Varun Aaron is not only quick but accurate as well. Shami and Varun may become the future pair. Another Off-spinner is Mohish Parmar, is the mold of Murali but had to fix his action. The BCCI did not go after him and start training for the fc domestic matches. His average of 92 wickets at 18 a piece is pretty good. The other opener for Shikhar is Jiwanjot Singh of Punjab. Both Varun Aaron and Jiwanjot Singh are playing in the domestic fc match for Punjab v/s Jharkhand and a fifty + batting average for the opener will be great

Yuvraj out for pujara is a good move but what about umesh yadav and rahane? Surely they are not ODI players by their records (and both have played enough games), they should be test players only. For rahane, saurabh tiwary should come in, he has had a great ranji season making a decent contribution in 10/12 of his innings and on some bowler friendly pitches. as for mohit sharma and umesh yadav, rishi dhawan and pankaj Singh should come in as they have had a few good seasons In a row now, not vinay kumar who I can already see being given a recall due to his recent performances, it's time to look for an all rounder in dhawan or a tall bowler in pankaj.

I'm hoping Aaron gets picked. I know he's returning from injury, but he did well against Mumbai recently in the Ranji trophy and bowled quick. The NZ ODIs should be a good opportunity to try out some fast bowling options like Aaron and Umesh, especially after the poor showing by Zak and Ishant in SA.

Zaheer, Pujara should be picked Yuvraj should be dropped Rahane should be preferred ahead of Raina Only 2 spinners should be enough for the series

Shikhar Dhawan didnt score much after his debut in test. Murli Vijay should also be given notice.

I loved watching Yuvi bat. Sadly, he is not up to the mark to play for India any more.He should be honest with himself, otherwise he will not only let himself down, but the whole country. All the best Yuvi,Thanks for the memories.

with no yuvi i dont watch the odi's..

Posted by pvwadekar on (December 30, 2013, 20:20 GMT)

This was bound to happen given his recent performances against Australia. By the same logic, Raina also needs to be dropped. Yuvi is not in good form but he will come through before 2015 WC (not sure about Raina). So please give chance to Pujara at 4 and Rayudu/Rahane 5 positions. Also get some new bowlers for example Rishi Dhawan, Ishwar Pandey, Varun Aaron.. please no Vinay Kumar or Mithun

When selectors sit down they must think about Rishi Dhawan! Pujara has already earned his place!

Posted by fguy on (December 30, 2013, 20:05 GMT)

until we are finally rid of has-been Zak & never-was Ishant we'll never win. they had 2 good sessions on a wicket which did all the work for them but soon as it's even slightly flat they struggle.

It will be an injustice if Rishi Dhawan isn't picked in the squad. Also they can try out some new faces like Harshal Patel and Pankaj Singh instead of the Sharmas/Kumars/Unadkats.

Bring Gautam Gambhir as third opener in both formats not necessarily play him first but it will put other openers under pressure to perform. Shikhar dhawan and rohit sharma both failed in ODI as openers.

Yuvraj, Gambhir and Sehwag belong to last world cup. The next one is in Australia-I dont think these guys have proved that they have it in them to succeed abroad. I also believe Raina will be exposed due to lack of technique on foreign pitches. He always escapes a close scrutiny by performing well in INdia.

its better India build up a core group of youngsters and I don't think it l be too different in tests and ODIs... pujara kohli rahane dhoni ashwin and jadeja should play both formats... in ODIs the team should be - dhawan rohit kohli pujara rahane dhoni jadeja ashwin zaheer and shami....

It is important that selectors Persist with a class player like Pujara for long time. Don't select him just for those ODI's Played on Bouncy tracks as Our Flat-track super stars Shiver- let him Play in Subcontinent as well. Srilanka persisted with Jayawardane, initially considered as a test match palyer, for longtime and see how he improved his game in all formats.

Hard decision to drop Yuvi but by the same time team has to plan for 2015, so Pujara has to be in ODI team. NZ tour will be another good experience for India and they have to forget the horrer tour 2002 as the best Indian team was outplayed against the might Shane Bond attack. We need to strengthen Bowling attack, time to make Zak into ODI.
