Delhi Daredevils v Deccan Chargers, IPL 2011, Delhi April 19, 2011

Sehwag backs Irfan to deliver

Delhi Daredevils are at the bottom of the IPL points table after four matches, and their biggest signing at the auction, allrounder Irfan Pathan, has been struggling to justify his US $1.9m price tag. Delhi captain Virender Sehwag, though, defended Irfan, who has so far taken only two wickets at nearly eight runs an over and scored 28 runs at less than a run a ball.

"He is coming from injury and will take some time," Sehwag said. "He is coming back after a one-year lay-off." Irfan had a back injury which kept him out of competitive cricket since last season's IPL, and returned to the top-flight only at the start of this year's IPL.

"He picked up an early wicket. He gave just about 30 runs in four overs," Sehwag said of Irfan's performance against Deccan Chargers on Tuesday. "He is getting better day by day."

After the loss to Deccan, Sehwag said one of the reasons for Delhi struggling at home was the slow track. "Kotla has always been like this over the last few years. It was always difficult to chase down a total of 160-170 on this track. With the ball keeping low it was tough to push things along late in the match."

Delhi have now been defeated in both their matches at Feroz Shah Kotla, and their next game is also at home, against Kings XI Punjab on Saturday. Sehwag hoped the track for the remaining matches at the Kotla would be more helpful to their pace-heavy attack. "We have indeed asked them to prepare a couple of green wickets here."

No doubt Irfan Pathan is the best all-rounder in india and his stats speak he is one of the best bowlers in india too. I am sure he will get back to his inswingers and a place in indian team.

He was a very good bowler when he started,But i think he was distracted by other`s calling him an "All rounder". If he can work on his pace and swing,he can certainly be the successor of Zak(Dont forget Zak is already 31!!!)

LOL!!!! Seriously- "Irfan Jewel of Delhi Team?" Our Best Bowler till 2006- where was I then? He had amazing 2 years- but thats it... N sum1 wrote- most consistent cricketer of IPL- rite... Dats y Rainas and Rohit sharmas have scored 300+ runs in all IPLS or how can u forget GOD- who will probably overtake raina as highest scorer? Wat abt Watto, Kallis? All of them have been successful in most seasons... N Irfan- y cant i remember him being Purple cap owner or Orange cap owner ever? Forget dat- cant even remember him getting many MOM.. Infact, Elder Pathan has more MOM(9)... Was a fan of Pathan's swing- but have accepted- he has lost pace, he has lost swing- and he has lost his place... :P Dnt live in past guys..

@DD owners : ya paid 1.9mil for this bloke ? what were you thinking??

I am aghast !!!! Some ppl here say that Irfan is the 'jewel' of our team and needs support to make a come back. Why at this level ? Ask Irfan to go back to the basics and atleast play the domestic season fully and perform, once he does that he will get all the backing ! Irfan at best was an above average bowler with a lucky bat and Ganguly screwed him by trying to make an allrounder out of him. Wasim, Gavaskar, Kapil, everybody had cautioned that Irfan dosent have sufficient talent and the right attitude ! So lets not cry for him, look at the younger generation and give them the support to come to Natonal level not oldies like Irfan.

Irfan has 846 runs in 59 innings and has taken 80 wickets in 71 innings he bowled in twenty 20 cricket....that speaks for itself...he is still recovering from an injury and showing signs if me he is the most consistent player in the IPL ever since its first edition...and i believe he will make a comeback to answer his critics....
