Tamim signs for Pune Warriors

  shares 137

Pune Warriors have signed up Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal, filling all their overseas slots for the coming season. Tamim, whose signing was formalised on Wednesday, became the eleventh overseas player for the Warriors and their second signing this week after Australian captain Michael Clarke.

Tamim and the franchise management, led by their captain Sourav Ganguly, had been involved in talks for the past week. He joins Shakib Al Hasan as the second Bangladesh player in this year's IPL, and the fifth from that country in the tournament overall.

"I can gain a lot of experience by playing with greats like Sourav Ganguly and Michael Clarke. I like to talk a lot about cricket so I think I am lucky to be playing with them and look forward to learn new things," Tamim told ESPNCricinfo.

"It'll be an extra boost, so it is very important that I do well. More importantly, just like Shakib opened the door for me, I would want that with my inclusion in the IPL, it will let other players from my country to play in this competition.

"With the T20 World Cup coming up this year, it will be a big opportunity for me to perform in the format," Tamim said.

Tamim would look to carry his form into the IPL - he hit four half-centuries in the recent Asia Cup - given his failure during the Bangladesh Premier League last month where he only played two matches for the Chittagong Kings and scored only eight runs.

Now at least Bangladeshis won't cry over IPL being useless tournament :D Anyway, with Greame Smith being injured Tamim is likely to open the innings. And being a neutral fan, I hope Team's think tank have brain and they do allow Tamim to play every match that too as an opener.

It will be a sad experience for Tamim if he is kept on the side line. Considering his current form I am very hopefull that Saurav will give him a chance to play. We all know Tamim has a natural ability to strike but had to change his game for the team's sake. If he is given with the chance to just go for big hits which is atumatic for T20 match, with a little luck this guy can come real handy, hope it works for Pune, all de best to dada and tamim..

Let's see can he open in the 1st Game of Pune? He'll have to fight hard to take place in regular 11. He had proven his class in TEST & ODI. Now it's time to prove himself as a t-20 opener.

Dada is playing his cards wisely. He is a mastermind, without participating in auction by PWI, he managed to get the good players. This time PWI are underdogs to crack the show. My playing XI is : 1. Smith/Harshad Khadiwale , 2. Tamim Iqbal/Marlon Samuels, 3. S Ganguly, 4. Manish Pandey/ Jessey Ryder, 5. Machale Clarke/ Luke Wright, 6. Robin Utappa/Ekalavya Dwivedi, 7. Vrothers, Tamim is from Bangladesh and not from India- Correct it. Scoring 4 half centuried not going to help any team- convert those to HUNDREDS or else you will become another Mr. Fifty like Habibul bashar. We don't want this to happen

We have Minimum eight World Class Player. Our Domestic Player Also Good Skill compare Indian Domestic Player. Always India underestimate Bangladesh, that's way they are World Champion But Ranking Number # 3. Best Of Luck Team INDIA & Best Of Luck IPL

@hadleecrowe look, if u will watch the starting matches of ipl this season ,things will become very clear to u, aus,wi,nz,sa,sl,eng are playing matches with each other these days so their players will not be available for around one month and later some other series may also get started,so in this case their might be a situation for some team that it is having only 3 of its 11 overseas players available,so this is a good rule from bcci.

@ sachin_vvsfan: No doubt Tamim's t-20 record is worse than some BD national side players. But I think he has been chosen due to his stroke playing tendency. Mahmudullah or Kevin O Brien are handy at Middle-order but none of them can b used at opening or Top-order slot. Tamim is a good stand-by option 4 Pune opening slot. Brendan Taylor of Zim can b a choice also.

Can anyone explain to me the point of having 11 international players when only 4 can play at a time??? frustrating watching what could be great battles between class players when u have to see journeymen indian players when quality internationals sit on the sides... Look BCCI be realistic ... the IPL is a money making venture so pick the best players and be rid of the quota system. Look how many people follow the English premiership with only one or two ENglish players in soe teams... What happened?? It became a global brand, if oen 20 20 league had the guts and coin to do that you would have a competition worth watching.

Clarke and Tamim are not well known for their T20 skills. yes Calm down bengalis. He was in great form in Asia cup but didn't he score too slowly(almost costed the game aginst india). Someone like mahmadullah is handy in T20 with his bowling skills. Pune should have gone for the likes of kevin o brien, mahmadullah instead of clarke or tamim

  • POSTED BY on | March 30, 2012, 6:17 GMT

Its great, it will gain strong support from bengoli people. Dada & Tamim ...wow..

  • POSTED BY on | March 30, 2012, 6:07 GMT

Simply Brilliant! Tamim and Jessy Ridder/Grame Smith opening. Followed by Ganguly, Manish Pandey (1st Indian to score a 100 in IPL), Robin Uthappa, Michel Clark, Laxmi Ratan Shukla (Man of the tournament for Bengal Vijay Hazare tournament), Angelo Mathews, Rahul Sharma, Murli Karthik, Aashish Nehra and Ashoka Dinda... They still have Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Jerome Taylor and Wayne Parnell. And you guys say the team is waste. #EpicFail There are 11 players Clark will be busy in his other tournaments, same goes with South Africa and Srilanka.

  • POSTED BY on | March 30, 2012, 6:01 GMT

I think inclusion of Clarke is the best decision of PWI for this season. Clarke, Mathews and Samuals will share the role of finisher in Yuvi's absence.

  • POSTED BY on | March 30, 2012, 5:57 GMT

LOL... PWI have 8 openers - Dada, uthappa, ryder, smith, tamim, khadiwale, pandey and jadhav. Monish Mishra in one of his interview said he also wants to open innings. So that makes the count equal to 9.

  • POSTED BY on | March 30, 2012, 5:34 GMT

I don't know what is going to happen. But i think if pune give tammim a chance to play as a opener, he may perform well. All the best pune warriors. Love from Bangladesh.

I think it's a great decision to take Tamim to the Pune squad. He is known as Boom-Boom Tamim in Bangladesh. As far from my experience Tamim never care any Bowler specially Indian, Australian & English & he has the ability to perform good in any situation. . . so he'll be a very helpful hand for Pune Warrirs & hope that PW will win the IPL 2012

  • POSTED BY on | March 30, 2012, 3:21 GMT

I think Pune's IPL team selection so far are horrible.Micheal Clarke & now Tamim.I think Dada should have to go for any allrounder who will at least fill up the place for Yuvraj, but getting two opener & a batsman like Clarke in the middle order,I don't think will help them too much. But,after all Dada is Dada so he will make a reasonable playing 11 at during match time.

  • POSTED BY cimrsimg on | March 29, 2012, 23:25 GMT

@ Cpt. Meanster: I don't why you feel WOW about this team. In the 13 you listed, only 3 are Indians. Dada is the only real star, but not in that great form. And with so many foreign players, end of the day you can play only 4, so it's not helping much.

  • POSTED BY Cpt.Meanster on | March 29, 2012, 21:18 GMT

I am a hearty well wisher to Bangladeshi cricket. Being an Indian, I always want the sub-continental sides to prosper. I always feel we are one people. Tamim is a fantastic choice for the Warriors. In fact, he should have been picked in the auction in February. Anyway, it's never too late in cricket. I am sure Tamim will open the innings for Pune. I think his partner will be either DADA or Jesse Ryder. What a combination !!! I am sure Tamim and his team mates will provide a treat to our beloved Yuvraj Singh !!!! Come on Tamim.. do it for Team Pune and do it for Yuvi !!!

  • POSTED BY Knightriders_suck on | March 29, 2012, 19:46 GMT

Another dud signing, with the bowling that Pune have getting another batsman makes no sense. We already have Ryder and Smith. Where does Tamim play? Plus Uthappa and Pandey are two certainities and they are pretty similar to Tamim. Seriously we needed a bowler. Thomas, Parnell, Nehra!!!! if that is the fast bowling stock what is canon fodder? Philander would have been a perfect and he was available, instead Sahara had to play this cheap marketing gimmick. Balance of the whole team is skewed. Our three best bowlers are Rahul Sharma, Murtaja and (I don't believe it) Karthik. So if we play all three there is no spot for two quickies. So you have to open with Murtaja or ryder in every match. Pune look like wooden spoon holders to me now. Anybody wants my tickets?

Good to see Tamim get a contract with an IPL franchise as 5th Bangladeshi player & 2nd currently. His batting approach matches with T-20, his t-20 career is poor, though. He should try to improve his T-20 records whenever he'll get any chance their.

All the best Tamim Iqbal.Do Well.

  • POSTED BY Baundele on | March 29, 2012, 14:16 GMT

Pune have a relatively weak set of international players. So, Tamim will be in their starting XI. He has the ability to perform well and cement his position in the team. On a bigger context I see it as an improvement to the BCCI-BCB relationship. If Shakib and Tamim performs well, we may see Bangladesh playing in India rather sooner than later.

This seems quite interesting.. If I am not wron Indian teams signs only those who seems to be a threat for their national team.. Last time they sign 3 players who did well against the world cup match.. Now they sign Tamim who was superb in last Asia Cup match against India. As Sakib is already in IPL I think Nasir will be signed by another team. Hope every one understand trics of India's success.

Great to see Tamim finally get his chance to show the world what he is made of well done Pune and well done Dada he will show you why he's one of most explosive player that came out of Bangladesh. All he needs now is to shine from the rest of the foreign players in Pune side which he will do in the nets.

@vvsquare, during BPL he was recovering from injury and still to get back his rhythm. But if you'd seen him in Asia cup, you must admit he is a class batsman and a very good inclusion for Pune. He should not be kept only as a bench warmer

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2012, 11:43 GMT

Gud luk for the future. I really luk fwd to b'desh becoming a formidable test unit just as the other sub continent nations. all the best.

owww.....Pune done dam mistake..!! Tamin and Clark are not good T 20 Players, if u see the current sqaud pune need some daashiing players like GUPTIL ( new Zealand player) or Taylor ( Zim Wkt batsman) 1st thing they miss the AUction and they are buying useless player...!!! i dont thing with this sqaud pune can win only 1-2 match .......!!

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2012, 11:01 GMT

Hurray!Tamim Iqbal will play in Ipl season 5.it will be great opportunity for him.Best of luck Tamim.we whole nation with you.We all proud of you.God bless you.

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2012, 11:01 GMT

I think that will be learning session for Tamim Iqbal, no doubt he is going to be the legends of Bangladesh Cricket & one of the greatest stars of World Cricket as well, but playing in this tournament helps him to share the knowledge with the leading cricketers to gain a lot from them. But i would like to emphasize on being a good human & to be sporting, because that is actually most needed to be a ICON of a Nation. To conclude it, i must say that best wishes to Mr. Tamim, pray to GOD that you will be able to continue your prolific form that you have shown in the last ASIA CUP.

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2012, 10:53 GMT

Congratzzzzz Tamim.I think pune took right desicion to add tamim in their squad but i'm not satisfied to see Clark in PWI team.Instead of clark pune should go for young guns like paul stirling,k O'brien,Taylor etc.Clark is a good cricketer no doubt but not suitable for this types of format..Anyways all the best Pune.

@ Bruisers .. Nathan McCulum had his contract bought out.

  • POSTED BY vvsquare on | March 29, 2012, 10:33 GMT

if tamim played only 2 games in d "BPL"(i.e. bangladesh premier league not barclays :D ), I wonder how many games he'll get in the IPL...bt atleast he can "talk cricket" like he said sittin in d dugout..:D :D

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2012, 10:29 GMT

Good for Tamim and Bangladesh cricket and also he will add a good potential to pune if they allow him to play as much game as possible. not like what KKR did with Mashrafi Martuza (who was been given a chance to play just 1/2 games and bowl in the slog over, what is too much pressure and chalanging for any bowler and not enough to prove ur potential). u cant judge a player by testing him playing just 1 or 2 games in this formate. though i believe that 1 or 2 games will b enough to prove himself for Tamim. Best of luck Tamim.

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2012, 10:26 GMT

Congratulation Tamim Iqbal Khan hope u will get easily chance in XI & get some 50 & 100 too....:)

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2012, 10:26 GMT

Hopefully he'll open the door for players like Musy,Nasir and many more youngsters. Even a Mashrafee comeback is possible, the IPL always neglects us but i think its time they start buying our players.

  • POSTED BY Sachit1979 on | March 29, 2012, 10:25 GMT

Guys, get out of your comfort zone of whats within the subcontinent or the old habit of picking someone with birth from the even older Australian Supremacy Theory. Stop and look at the previous T20 World Cup qualifiers. And make the most worthy player play for you.

Haven't Ryan ten Doeschate and Shakib been brilliant with KKR?
