Royals have received death-bowling boost - Dravid

Rajasthan Royals captain Rahul Dravid has said the inclusion of bowlers like Fidel Edwards and James Faulkner in the squad has strengthened their bowling, specially in the death overs, improving Royals' chances in the IPL this year.

"[Last year] we were hampered by injuries to our main bowlers, Shaun Tait, Kevon Cooper and S Sreesanth," Dravid said. "Moreover, Shane Watson was not available for most of the matches and that meant that, at times, the responsibility of bowling death overs was shouldered by rather inexperienced bowlers.

"We had to pay the price for that but this time we are better equipped. In the auctions, we went for Fidel Edwards and James Faulkner under our backup plans. Edwards can generate good pace like Tait, and Faulkner has been doing well in this version of cricket."

Dravid was also happy with Sreesanth's fitness. "He has been bowling very well in the nets and practice matches," he said. "He is eager to prove himself."

While stressing that Watson's "presence alone was great for the team", Dravid said that the decision to bowl would rest with the Australian allrounder. "I feel at some point of time he will bowl but he will have to decide himself." Watson did not bowl during the recent Test series in India because of fitness issues.

Dravid also refrained from stating who would partner Ajinkya Rahane at the top of the innings, saying that the team would think about the options it has.

RR is a decent team now ! this team can give many teams run for their money. I think knowing Dravid he would go for tried and tested team members with few tweaks to take care of their death bowling. This means Faulkner is going to play. Cooper has done a decent job as well , so it wouldnt be fair to drop him. The fact that Kushal keeps wicket makes his case really interesting ! this will certainly allow dravid to squeeze in a local spinner.

My team would be Rahane Kusal (WK) Watson Dravid Sachin B Faulkner Binny Cooper Shree Chavan Harmeet

Rahul Darvid looks more a sports manager than a thinking captain; which makes him the best among other IPL teams' captains. Most of the time he succeeds in bringing out the best from players.

He is good team player but a better captain!!!

Dravid's thinking is just wonderful, look at his selection of foreign players, he has got a back up for everyone, fidel edwards for Tait, Samuel Badree for Brad Hogg, Owais Shah for Brad Hodge, Cooper for Faulkner, Obviously no one can replace watson, but they have got perera who can create an impact at the top if Watson is out injured or something!!

@dayada: You are absolutely right, kusal is a great talent, we have seen it now since his debut but still he won't be put ahead of watson, and he wont' be slotted in the middle order as Hodge and owais shah, two seasoned t20 specialists are present!!

@Narbavi: I'm srilankan. i agree with u & i dont think RR will give kusal a chance even without watson becoz he is a overseas player. I'm a good fan of kusal & he'll catch everyone's eyes in future. This is not the time....

@Htc-Android: they can use kusal only if they decide to give watson a rest, and you are wrong, they have two more keepers, yagnik and sanju samson, sanju samson will be starting the first two or three games for RR this season!!

Rajasthan has only two choice for wicketkeepers. One is kusal and the other is goswami. Goswami is not reliable with the bat. Kusal is the other choice left for them. So they must go with him.

i see lots of comments about kusal perera & watson, it's okay but some of them talk about kusal highly. dont do that becoz he is very young & inexperience but talented, he'll become good in future. so it's really unfair to compare kusal & watson.....

Hey guys c'mon... Idea is RR to beat the hell out of other teams... So they need a super keeper who can bat well... in this RR squad its non other than Kusal... He dsnt need to open the innings, He can be used any where, but the problem is he goes as an overseas player.... but definitely worth to have him in the side.. he times it to perfection.... @ Narbavi on (April 2, 2013, 16:23 GMT) - watto won the player of the series in T20 WC mainly coz of super bowling skills which he might not use in this series... Watto the all-rounder is always welcome but not watto the "out of touch" batsmen...

Narbavi- He talk so much about Watson he has a point to prove about watson becasue he's an Allrounder and also how fail or out of touch not caring for T20 format also not for watson i remember he come before t20 world he out of touch too but he come's the tournament all about him ausie ride with his form i know he had bad few months but he can return well. Also we talk about Kusal janith and RR options why we go for owis shah he fail since 2009 and also he wasn't part of england team why we give him to chance cuting kusal janith out of the game and also RR have no idea how become next wicket keeper my opinon is we play Kusal janith all the game with keeper and opening bastman with rahane and we go watson with number 4 like they did 2007 ipl they win. and other 2 guys for Brad Houge and Shaun Tait why not some time kusal might fail few open matches but you give him to chance he will suprise you definitly guys trust me he only for second chris Galye on this IPl.

  • POSTED BY Baseball-Sucks on | April 3, 2013, 12:36 GMT

@Narbavi ; Well, I didn't say that RR would lift the cup if they play Kusal. :) It doesn't depend on one player but a collective effort. But every team is going to the competition hoping to win it, aren't they ? So Kusal can definitely can help to bring the RR more than a few steps closer to that goal with his explosive batting n sharp wicket keeping.

  • POSTED BY Narbavi on | April 3, 2013, 10:15 GMT

@Baseball-Sucks: So if kusal plays RR will win ipl? wow great logic, watson didn't do well in the tests, t20 is a different ball game, a format which he has always excelled, your point is totally invalid when u say RR has to leave out Watson to play kusal at the top order!!

  • POSTED BY Baseball-Sucks on | April 3, 2013, 9:37 GMT

@ Narbavi ; Let me ask ask you one thing. Do Rajasthan Royals wanna win the competition or just wanna build a team with big names ? I really don't care If Kusal plays at expense of Watson or any other. But They must open with him, if they wanna win anything. And He is a terrific wicket keeper too who was highly praised by Ian Healy in his very first match. Rajasthan Royals have the opportunity to deploy the MOST destructive opening pair "Perera n Rahane" among all other IPL teams. PS: Watson was good but not anymore. He is terribly out of form n out of shape. He barely manages to keep his place in the Aussie XI thanks to his reputation.

  • POSTED BY on | April 3, 2013, 9:07 GMT

Kusal has his own identity. He has a level head and certain characteristics and looks a born cricketer and he will stir up the IPL. Mark my words. Even in fielding he caught some marvellous catches. At 22 he is fr superior to any srilanlan past or present.

  • POSTED BY Narbavi on | April 3, 2013, 8:52 GMT

@Nadeera Handaragamage and @baseball-sucks: I am jealous? Really? did u even see my first comment where i had praised him? My point is simple, u guys want him to replace watson in the playing 11, that's just too much, man of the series in the first ipl and man of the series in the t20 wc last year should be replaced by this new guy? Perera might play the first game as watson isn't available for the first game, but do not expect him to play instead of watson in all games!!

  • POSTED BY on | April 3, 2013, 8:45 GMT

good luck. I hope & pray that RR wins the title for the sake of the great human being who goes by the name Rahul Dravid. Best wishes from a former RCB fan and a loyal Dravid fan.

  • POSTED BY vak1997 on | April 3, 2013, 8:36 GMT

Although RR has T20 specialists like Watson, Hodge, Shah, I'm looking forward to Dravid's batting. He's just a class apart!

  • POSTED BY on | April 3, 2013, 8:17 GMT

@Narbavi-You are jelous about kusal janith perera.dont jelous young exciting players.he has quick hands and good hand eye cordination.

  • POSTED BY Baseball-Sucks on | April 3, 2013, 7:01 GMT

@Narbavi; Pls go n check my comments which I made a few months back regarding Kusal Perera. I (and my fellow SL fans) mentioned that a new kid is on his way to international arena n he is gonna be the next Sanath Jayasuriya. :) Then he came n made the headline right away as the reincarnation of Sanath Jayasuriya. We know what we are talking about pal. Rajasthan Royals are so lucky to bag him the way they did. The most interesting thing about him is he is not afraid to go after bowlers from the get go n doesn't care who the bowler is. This young blood is gonna rock the IPL and Watson is no match for him.:) Just wait n see..

  • POSTED BY on | April 3, 2013, 5:10 GMT

I think the wonderfully named Sachin Baby (and look at the timing of his arrival on the scene with this name :-) ) would be a star one day, provided he gets enough chances. I have seen only a few glimpses of him, but he looks both talented and having a good head. I hope RR give him a fair deal.

  • POSTED BY on | April 3, 2013, 4:59 GMT

If rajasthan make kushal perera sit on the bench....dan dey would be doing the same mistake dat warriors did last year...and the result everyone knows...the kind of form which perera is having at present will make d rajasthan pair as the most explosive openera in IPL. go rajasthan...go wid perera....

Not these old horses ,We respect them but now time change...

@Baseball-Sucks yes drop the man who was voted Player of the Series in the first IPL and the last T20 world cup, very good idea. Sarcasm aside, Watson even without his bowling is still a class act, according to stats, he is the 3rd best batsman in the ipl after Gayle and Marsh. Watson struggles in test cricket but questoning him in limited overs cricket is foolish. Perera is good but he is no Watson yet.

Why are some ppl shopping for Watson ? Its hilarious. :)) He is terribly out of form n out of shape. This new Sri Lankan opener(W/K) is a pocket rocket. He is in an explosive form. And he doesn't care who the bowler is and will take any bowler apart. Kusal Perera is 10 tmes better than Watson. If RR play to win, they must send Kusal and Rahane as openers.

iof watson cant bowl then he is waste in the team as a batsmen. they have kushal perera who is a batsmen cum wkt keeper. last year royals had wkt keeping problems. so if watson cant bowl pepera must be in the team. 1.dravid 2.rahane 3.perera 4.ashok maneria 5.brad hodge 6.stuart binny 7.james faulkener 8.harmeet singh 9.shreeshanth 10.amit singh 11.shaun tait/samuel badree/edwards

And he is an overseas player too, already RR has a headache regarding their overseas players as they have to leave out Shah and Hogg and Edwards or Badree
