Jimmy Adams set to skipper Free State, Gait released

Former West Indies captain Jimmy Adams is set to skipper Free State this summer, subject to approval from the United Cricket Board's finance committee.

Adams was axed earlier this year to make way for Carl Hooper when South Africa toured the Caribbean, but many felt that Adams was made the scapegoat for a general decline in West Indian cricket.

At 33, and with a batting average 41,26 from 54 Tests, the Jamaican should still have much to offer a young Free State side. His arrival in Bloemfontein is dependant on Free State getting the green light from the UCB, but Free State general manager Seppi Lusardi is confident that there will be no hitches.

All overseas professionals have to receive UCB approval, a precaution in place to ensure that unions do not overstretch themselves, particularly at a time wheh UCB treasurer John Blair has warned against rocketing salary bills.

"I don't foresee any problems," said Lusardi. "Our finances are in good order and we believe that UCB approval will be a formality.

"We're really excited about getting Jimmy. He's got vast experience at Test level and we hope that he'll pass this along to our youngsters, to players like Morne van Wyk who will be vice-captain this season. And don't forget, apart from his batting and captaincy, Jimmy's also a useful left-arm spinner. We think his acquisition is a very positive step for Free State cricket."

Lusardi also confirmed that Free State had released Andrew Gait.

"Andrew's accepted a contract with Derbyshire next year. This makes him an overseas player and with Jimmy coming, there would be no place for Andrew. If any other province wishes to pick Andrew up as their overseas pro, he would go with our blessing," said Lusardi.
