Vaughn Johnson, the Otago coach, has resigned from his position following allegations of financial misconduct. Johnson, on sick leave due to a stress-related illness, decided to step down ahead of the investigations. Johnson had taken over the Otago role from Mike Hesson in 2011.
"The association was made aware of an allegation involving Mr Johnson and raised it with him," Otago Cricket chief Ross Dykes said. "It has since accepted his resignation. This has been a very sad and disappointing episode for all concerned."
Johnson apologised for his conduct in a statement issued by him. "I have made some very bad decisions around my personal finances which have compounded to a point where I have let down Otago Cricket and myself," Johnson said. "I sincerely regret my actions and must now concentrate on restoring my health so I can do my best to make amends."
Johnson had coached Wellington from 2000 to 2006 and had also worked with New Zealand Cricket since the early 2000s. A former pace bowler, Johnson played 27 first-class matches with 64 wickets and 20 List A matches for 21 wickets.
