Catch as catch can

John Emburey remembers how Mike Gatting pulled off a miracle catch off Allan Border ... almost

John Emburey: We'd made 290 in the first innings and Australia's innings was in the balance at around 170 for 4. Border was going well, and close to his hundred, when he hit Phil Edmonds hard and straight between Mike Gatting's legs at short leg. Gatt stuck a hand out and Border, who thought he had brilliantly caught it, set off for the pavilion. But Gatt didn't have it under control. He juggled with it, jumped forward to try and catch it again, but missed. I think it was probably the right decision by umpire Dickie Bird to not allow it - he really didn't have it under control for that long. Border was pretty happy: we were soon off for bad light, he went on to make 196, and Australia won the Test comfortably.
