Pakistan leave out Rehman, Jamshed for Sri Lanka Twenty20s

ESPNcricinfo staff

Left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman and batsman Nasir Jamshed have been left out of Pakistan's squad for the Twenty20s against Sri Lanka in the UAE later this month. Left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar, who was not picked for the recently-concluded home and away limited-overs games against South Africa due to a finger injury, has been named in the 14-man squad, which will also play a one-off T20 against Afghanistan in the lead-up to the Sri Lanka series.

Middle-order batsman Haris Sohail, who has been on the fringes of the national team but has not played in it since August, makes a comeback. Uncapped Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited opener Sharjeel Khan also earns a call-up.

The squad is largely comprised of young players, with the exception of Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal and captain Mohammad Hafeez. The selectors have persisted with the newcomers, with batsman Sohaib Maqsood and bowlers Bilawal Bhatti and Anwar Ali retaining their places.

Fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has missed out once again due to his brittle body; he sustained an injury during the final match of the series against South Africa in the UAE earlier this month and needs a four-week rest period. He is expected to return for the Sri Lanka Tests.

Veteran allrounders Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Malik, who were ruled out of the South Africa games with injury, have not been named. Malik has recovered from his injury and is presently featuring in the Faysal Bank T-20 Cup for in his departmental team, Pakistan International Airlines.

Offspinner Ajmal will not play the T20 against Afghanistan on December 8, but will join the team ahead of the two matches against Sri Lanka, scheduled for December 11 and 13.

Rehman played only one of the four T20s against South Africa in November, and was taken for 18 runs in his solitary over. Jamshed played three matches, but didn't touch 20 in any of them and also failed to score at over a run a ball.

Sharjeel, 24, hails from Hyderabad and has earned a name for himself with his T20 blitzes. In the format, he has scored 688 runs - at a strike rate of 134.11 - and has a century to his name. He scored 72 to set up ZTBL's victory in their opening game of the Faysal Bank T-20 Cup last week, and has hit two cameos in successful chases since. He has also been in decent touch in the first-class competition, with three fifties in his previous three matches. He averages 51.44 after 30 List A matches.

That looks like a fantastic squad!!

I'm delighted to see the likes of Haris, Sharjeel and the return of Zulfiqar, who has been a revelation for Pak ever since his debut.

Although, I'm disappointed to not see Gul in that squad because he is the best fast bowler in this format and is just as good with the bat as Anwar Ali, hence he should have been there instead of Anwar and Amin for Hammad or Ehsan would have been ideal.

Sharjeel In -- good to see that alhamdulila but Abdul Razzaq out not welcomed. Umar amin play;s t20 is fine but for ODI;s his selection is not justified looking at his career stats . I think overall good selection as usual for T20 so no complains. This is Trial & error from PCB for improving t20 team further, thus Taufeeq Umar maybe considered as opener for t20's he can also be wicket keeper if suppose umar akmal gets injured during a tour or series. The comments about Mohammed Hafeez playing down the order are genuine and should be in place practically considering recent tour's its reasonable him playing down the middle order insha allah. Pakistan Don;t really have issues with T20 format from past its the Batting Department of ODI's that's always been the concern. Good Luck.

I'm very surprised people are upset that Jamshed has been dropped. Frankly how can you be an opener and can't play off the front foot against quick bowling. It's no good allowing players to score runs against weaker teams because it's fools gold. For the same reason Hafeez should bat at 6 because he's a useful bowler and can bat comfortably in the middle order. Again Alfridi makes the squad since he's also a good bowler but should bat at 9 since there are many younger batsmen who have a more mature approach to batting. Umar Gul is well passed his sell by date and has been very inconsistent. Personally speaking Pakistan need a batting coach (agressive) - Organise a squad game and force the batsmen to rotate the strike and turn 1's into 2's. Finally with respect to running - I was alway told anything behind the wicket is the non strikers call and vice versa - If this still leads to run outs then teach the guilty batsmen an improved method of running.

  • championcommando on December 3, 2013, 19:25 GMT

In domestic t20 i saw port qasim young wicket keeper batsman m. WAQAS who probably represent U-19 squad really impressed me as he can not only bat but also kept wickets very well. selector should groom him as a future product.

  • championcommando on December 3, 2013, 19:13 GMT

but this is batting department in which Pakistan is lacking to find a mature and good temperament batsman although they have also got some talent in batting such as Ahmed shahzad, shoaib maqsood, yasir hameed Fawad alam, haris sohail, sharjeel khan, sami aslam, babar azam, ali waqas khurrum manzoor. Awais zia, khalid latif ,shahid yousuf who has potential to play on international level but they need to show some chracter with the bat and perform on regular basis instead of make hundred in a match and on next 5 matches even fail to get double figure for this purpose they must learn the art of rotating strike and play shot only on loss balls

  • championcommando on December 3, 2013, 18:39 GMT

people are talking about Umer gul no doubt he is one of the best bowler in T20 that why he is the top wicket taker in this format b4 his injury and he is still the only bowler who took 5 wickets hawls twice in this format but bowling department is never the problem of Pakistan when u see a bundle of fast bowling talent in Pakistan domestic such as Muhammad talha, Tabish khan , sadaf hussain, imran khan, najaf shah, Muhammad haseeb (playing for wapda), zia ul haq and some other name including new sensation usman khan while on international level Pakistan has already got M.Irfan, junaid khan, umer gul, Bilawal bhatti, anwar khan and sohail tanvir so Pakistan fast bowling has a very strong bench and has a safe future for next 5 to 6 years.

  • Haz95 on December 3, 2013, 18:33 GMT

ODi XI S Khan, A Shehzad, S Maqsood, U Akmal, M Ul Haq, M Hafeez, B Bhatti,S Afridi, S Ajmal, J Khan, M Irfan. I really want H Sohail in the XI but dunno who to replaces -_-. You will not find a bowler like Hafeez who can, CAN finish the game.

Test XI K Manzoor, S Masood/ A Shehzad, A Ali, Y Khan, M Ul Haq, F Alam, U Akmal,B Bhatti? A Rehman, S Ajmal, J Khan/M Irfan... We really need a Specialist wicket keeper, I believe my Umar Akmal or maybe Sarfraz Ahmed. But even then, with the batting required, there will be only a spot for 1 specialist pacer as we also need a pace all rounder too.

    T20 XI S Khan, A Shehzad, S Maqsood, U Akmal, M hafeez, H Sohail, B Bhatti, S Afridi, S Ajmal, J Khan, Mohd irfan/ U Gul.

  • t20cric on December 3, 2013, 17:36 GMT

@Sports4Youth: The thing is that although he Umar Gul may not be the best bowler he is still miles ahead of guys like Tanvir, Wahab etc. The only reason I want Gul to be selected is that he will keep those useless guys out & may be able to groom the new generation of fast bowlers we have now. If they picked another young fast/ medium-fast bowler instead of Tanvir or Wahab then I would have no problem that they aren't picking Gul cuz then atleast we are grooming bowlers for next few years. Also I don't think he only got into team cuz of exclusion of Asif & Amir. He is bassically our next lead fast-bowler after Shoaib Akhtar retired. Also we won the T20 world-cup cuz of him & reached semi-finals in last T20 world-cup cuz he played a match-winnings inning against SA. Umar Gul is a better bowler then he gets dredit for especially in T20 where he has gotten figures of 5 wickets for 6 runs TWICE (second was earlier this year against SA).

  • pakstarr on December 3, 2013, 17:33 GMT

@Sports4Youth - I find your comments that Gul is a failure totally wrong. I don't know what you have been watching over the years. He has done more then most in the team, read @bouncer709 take on Gul, spot on.

I think Gul will in near future join the stable of bowlers we currently have. There is a lot the youngsters can learn from him and he will prove useful option if selected for team.

  • on December 3, 2013, 17:22 GMT

Take a bow, young Usman Khan Shinwari...what a Swing Bowler. This ZTBL team is seriously good, with dynamic youngsters and the magician Ajmal. This team could potentially replace players from our national side. Take aways from this tournamnet were: Harris Sohail, Usman Khan, Sharjeel Khan, Yasir Hameed, Mohd. Rizwan, and several other young players from other teams. Watch out for the future Pakistan team guys, it will be devastating once again. Inshallah!

  • on December 3, 2013, 17:17 GMT

It seems junaid does not God fathers- he is genuine match winner still he gets dropped on and off......

  • t20cric on December 3, 2013, 17:03 GMT

Just looked at the scoreboard of the T20 final of SNGPL vs ZTBL and I think Pakistan selectors will be reassured of their choice in selecting Sharjeel Khan and Haris Sohail. Imran Nazir and Yasir Hameed also looked good but I know that Imran Nazir has had chances but he's been inconsistent & Yasir is already 35 so no point in giving him a chance. Mohammad Rizwan didn't do good today but he looks like someone who deserves a chance in the international team in the future. Bilawal Bhatti today proved again that he is a reliable allrounder. But the thing is that SNGPL has international stars in the team but ZTBL only have Ajmal from the international team & they still won. Usman Khan is the star of the match though & he is definitely one for the future. To bowl 3.1 overs and 2 of those being a maiden as well as picking up 5 wickets for only 9 runs (all that at the young age of 19) is a huge achievement & if you also look that his list A batting average is 33 he should be in Pak team soon.

  • bouncer709 on December 3, 2013, 16:55 GMT

@Behind_the_Wicket: I agree with you, at least there batting line is better than Pakistan national team. I am just wondering, this Sui gas team was plying fine in the tournament, Misbah came and the team top order collapsed, and for the people who says without Misbah Pakistan team can not play 20 overs, here Misbah was part of Sui Gas, who could not play 20 overs, but ZTBL players proved they have potential to fill the gaps in Pakistan team, selectors should give one more chance to Yasir Hameed too.

  • bouncer709 on December 3, 2013, 16:42 GMT

@Sports4Youth: who told you umer gul bowls 130km, he still bowl in higher 130s, around 137-140 km/h. and this man did not make place in absence of Asif and Aamir, don't compare him with these shitty people who sold respect and bought embarrassment for Pakistan. In fact Umer Gul filled the space in Team after Waqar and Wasim and served Pakistan well more than his quality, and had a big role in T20 World Cup win. However, now a days, we have other fine bowlers and I think Umer Gul should not mind his exclusion from the team due to his injury, and he was going off colours. So he need to gain his rhythm from domestic cricket.

  • Behind_the_Wicket on December 3, 2013, 16:14 GMT

I bet about ZTBL , this team can beat Pakistan National Team and I see , Misbah ul Haq with big Zero , Umar Akmal Strugling against this side today , Bhutti played some good shots but his bowling was below average today. What a Performance form Usman Khan Shanwari 5 wickets for 9 runs in 3.1 overs. ZTBL batting is same like Indian Batting , Imran Nazir , Sharjeel Khan , Yasir Hameed , Haris Sohail , Shahid Yousaf & Ansar Ali .

  • bouncer709 on December 3, 2013, 16:13 GMT

WOW, Usman Khan Shinwari... what a bowler this young kid is.

  • Sports4Youth on December 3, 2013, 15:08 GMT

CONGRATULATIONS !!! BHATTI has just scored 38 from 20 ball (5x4, 2x6). Unfortunately he is out.

  • on December 3, 2013, 14:51 GMT

Today once again Sharjeel Khan and Harris Sohail proved why they were selected in the FAYSAL BANK T20 Final against Sui Gas. Harris scored an attacking 50 coming down the order, while Sharjeel with Imran Nazir scored a blistering 45. Good selection by selectors, also keep an eye on Yasir Hameed, this guys has been performing consistently and being not out most of the time.

  • Sports4Youth on December 3, 2013, 14:50 GMT

Earlier we were not getting any new players because one end was constantly occupied by Umar Gul and at the other end the selectors kept rotating W.Riaz, M.Sami, Junaid, Cheema, Tanvir Ahmed, S.Tanvir etc. Even Junaid was not being given any fair chance. Now with M.Irfan & Junaid the pace attack is well settled. Bhatti & Anwar Ali can do a great supporting role as all-rounders. We do not want Gul back in the team. It just disturbs the balance. Also in order to bring Gul into the team you will have to push out either Irfan or Junaid, do you want that.

  • Sports4Youth on December 3, 2013, 14:45 GMT

For all those asking for the inclusion of UMAR GUL. This is to clearify that Gul has completed his rehabilitation and had declared himself fit before the South Africa series began. But the looking at his performances the selectors have decided to ignore him. The selectors did persist with him since Amir and Asif were banned by the ICC, but because Gul did not show any improvement and his bowling had become below par at the pace of 130 kmph there was no point in considering him again. If a player does not improve after 10 years of international exposure then he will never improve. Now the team has great options in M.Ifran, Junaid, Bhatti, Anwar, Rahat, Asad Ali etc. There can be more options if more youngsters are given oppportunity.

I just hope the selectors do not go back to the old failiures of Gul, Sami, Riaz, Tanvir etc. There is a lot to look forward to.

  • on December 3, 2013, 14:17 GMT

All Gul fans, Gul had knee surgery and still not recovered yet from it. That's the reason he was not picked for any recent tours. Good decision by PCB. Let's pray he is fit for T20 WC.

  • sdqs_23 on December 3, 2013, 8:35 GMT

Further to our comment in ODi and Test we need to take chance Mohammed Rizwan of SNGPL he is in good nick.

His Average is:42.72 in First Class, List A 37.78 and T20 37.66 and a good wicket keeper

My Team For T20 Srilanka Series 2013 and as well as Afghanistan

Ahmed Shehzad, Sharjeel Khan, Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood, Haris Sohail, Bilawal Bhati, Shahid Afridi, Anwar Ali, Saeed Ajmal and Junaid Khan

There is no space for Sohail Tanveen He is leg side player a good medium pacer easily beat ball to sohail and final he play rush short and bowling i also not an extra ordinary.

  • Fast_Track_Bully on December 3, 2013, 5:06 GMT

@ LionsofLanka. One question: What make Mathews as captain? Is he a good bowler or batsmen or a thinking captain? Even he do not know why he is in the team!

  • TMuhammad on December 3, 2013, 3:54 GMT

Good Almost a good team. But please keep these players away from short pitcher M. Akram who loves to see every bowler to bowl short pitch deliveries and Whatmore who want every batsman to chase the outgoing swing deliveries to give catch practice to the fielders in slip or to wicket keeper. For God Sake please tell them to keep away from such activities as this is a favorite act of almost every Pakistani batsman. Strangely, when they are first selected to play they avoid such acts but when they play a few matches their techniques changes and they start chasing out swing bowls and forget to bowl yorkers and instead bowl short pitch.

  • Syed_imran_abbas on December 3, 2013, 0:34 GMT

cant stand umer amin and sohail tanvir. both have no talent better than domestic level. both are waste of space. i would have rather taken gul and jamshed in side. gul will help anwar and bhatti as well.

  • Sports4Youth on December 2, 2013, 20:22 GMT

I am a supporter of SHARJEEL but I am not a critic of JAMSHED. I personally think that Jamshed is a very talented yound lad. His failiures against South Africa should be ignored really. It happens to many players in their early days. Styen & Co.are a good bunch of bowlers backed up by some razor sharp fielding. Even Hafeez & Misbah and others have failed miserably against SA in the recent times. So why only target Jamshed. Not so long ago Jamshed had won the hearts of all cricket followers. So we know that he boy is talented. The rest of the trade he will learn with proper exposure to international cricket.

  • Sports4Youth on December 2, 2013, 20:17 GMT

@ Stark62 Oh come on be fare mate. Gul as good as Anwar Ali with bat. I think you didnt see the 1st SA vs Pak One day Anwar was man of the match. Yup I agree on no umer Amin; instead Ehsan should get a place. No disrespect Gul is a great bowler in this format.

  • Crick_Chater on December 2, 2013, 19:22 GMT

Over all good selection. Please bring in Hammad and let Umar Amin go for domestic. And PCB, please be persistent with these new players. Just be patient and you will see the results in few years. Jamshid is good only for sub-continent teams, more like Shoaib Malik. So no harm, in bringing him in against India. I hire people for fortune 500 companies, and can share a secret with you here that when hiring we, look for attitude, character and discipline.

Please groom these new guys and Hammad is a very impressive lad. He and others like shirjeel, harris, umar akmal, sohaib, ahmed can bring back the glory which Pakistan has lost in last few years. As for bowling unit is concern, NO WORRIES AT ALL!!!

  • t20cric on December 2, 2013, 19:07 GMT

One of the best squad in recent times for Pakistan. Obviously still there are some mistakes. Hammad Azam instead of Umar Amin and Umar Gul instead of Sohail Tanvir would make this squad as strong as possible and the selection would be really competitive.

    For the Afg T20: 1.Sharjeel Khan, 2.Ahmed Shehzad, 3.Sohaib Maqsood, 4.Umar Akmal, 5.Haris Sohail, 6.Mohammad Hafeez, 7.Shahid Afridi, 8.Bilawal Bhatti, 9.Anwar Ali, 10.Zulfiqar Babar, 11.Junaid Khan/Sohail Tanvir

For the SL T20s Ajmal will come back probably take Zulfiqar's spot. This would be a great order but knowing Hafeez he will play himself at no.3 & Sohaib at no.6. Pakistan will have to work hard against SL bowlers though cuz SL have spinners above Tahir's standard but their pacers aren't to great(except maybe Malinga). Good Luck Pakistan & win this series.

  • bouncer709 on December 2, 2013, 18:11 GMT

Well I just read the news about ZTBL win in semi final where Yasir Hameed scored 61, and then looked at his profile, he has scored 61(not out), 34(not out), 37 (not out) 48 (not out) in current Faysal Bank T20 tournament going on ( not out in all the matches). and this guy one day record shows he played 3 (50+), and 2 (40+) innings in his last 10 ODIs he played for Pakistan, but despite of his good performance he was dropped. His cricinfo profile says he is technically more solid player than others Pakistan top orders, I still remember his knocks against India.....He has scored 3 centuries in ODI and 2 times crossed 90 figure, shows he has potential to play big innings. he currently seems in form plus he have experience, and should be given chance in ODI to strengthen batting deparment.

  • LionsofLanka on December 2, 2013, 18:01 GMT

One IRON MAN enough for 11 boys from Pakistan. 3 legends, 1 top class left armer, 1 sling missile , 1 swing juggler and so many at one end. It seems drought at other end. Tuk Tuk is preserving his records. What will be the ultimate result? But I feel the youngsters from PAK have opportunities to learn professionalism & skills from these SL greats.

  • on December 2, 2013, 16:58 GMT

Ya it is good selection. But view to my opinion selectors should include Hamad Azam instead of Umar Amin who is out form. And also please include Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan in test Squad while Abdur Razzak in T20 squad as an opener with Shahid Afridi. It'll will be nice testing and good moving for Pakistan Cricket!

  • MJ-Sid on December 2, 2013, 15:32 GMT

Not a good choice of the word "brittle" to define Irfan's body. Nevertheless if he gets fit by the test series he will prove a handful even on these flat/slow pitches.

  • UDShehan on December 2, 2013, 15:11 GMT

I think its better to play the match 1st & everyone can comment on it.remember SL is the Number 1 ranked team in the T20.to become number 1 you have to win matches so SL have done it very consistently in T20.so i think pak fans should not kep so much of hopes of wining matches here.SL is a very unique talented team who can beat any team easily.

  • on December 2, 2013, 14:27 GMT

  • keptalittlelow on December 2, 2013, 13:54 GMT

Its nice to see selectors persisting with youngsters, the favourable conditions in UAE will help these youngsters gain more confidence. However Nasir Jamshed desrves another chance in favourable conditions now, dont forget his woes in SA are no worse than Hafeez's in SA, so why aging Hafeez is still there but no Nasir?

  • m.Kash.k on December 2, 2013, 13:21 GMT

Agree, Umar Akmal needs to play up the order. Sohail Tanvir was a very good bowler when is first start due to his action and he was 'meant' be an all-rounder (i guess not after all) - i would not play him as he's cost the team quite a few matches, I would play Hammad Azam instead. I agree with the mixture of youngsters and experienced players.

I don't feel Aridi has played well in the current position for some time, I would be tempted to move him around and tell him to keep his bat facing forward not upwards - legend though.

T20 is all about grooming young players for ODI's and Tests. Its a good move and hopefully promising showing some faith in young blood. We may lose a few matches until the right combination comes along but I would rather that than flogging dead horses which we have been doing for the past two years with the likes of Malik/Sohail Tanvir/A Razzaq.

In ODI's I think the likes of Umar Gul and Younis Khan also need to be taken into consideration as their experience can benefit the younger players.

  • huhohuhohuho on December 2, 2013, 11:53 GMT

good team but m rizwan should have been added hope he gets selected in the odi squad pak needs a good no 4 or 6 if hafeez becomes opener

  • Yousafahmed11 on December 2, 2013, 11:19 GMT

It will be a cake walk for Pakistan. SL coach already excused for their future loss. In tests, SL Fast track bullies will fight as it is a slow pitch, but cannot stop Pakistan from winning.

  • on December 2, 2013, 11:12 GMT

I have heard a lot of new names in these posts since the zimbabwe tour. and after hearing about them again and again I was curious to look at their stats. on paper there averages are good but the question is are they consistent performers? I m not saying sharjeel khan is a bad choice hammad azam is not good but my point is stats dont tell you the story. it is whether they can perform on the day or not. I would like to suggest PCB to give players 1 years contract. e.g combined our test odi and t20 we have 30 players all together. give them a years contract and assess them for a year if they perform then renew their contract if they dont just give the contract to someone who is performing in domestic level. this changes the mind set of players who play national or international. the players playing for pakistan will try to be consistent bcz they will know they will loose contract if they dont perform.

  • on December 2, 2013, 10:50 GMT

I must say .... Good combination selected for the very 1st time by the selectors. But I reckon Sohail Tanveer should be allowed as 12th man only

  • xylofon on December 2, 2013, 10:26 GMT

Dropping Jamshed is fine if for the right reasons and depending on what has been communicated with him - there is no reason to believe that PCB have elected the right people to support someone with an extraordinary talent so Im worried. Jamshed was no doubt useful in the last T20 WC, hope he plays again soon.

Nice to see Haris, Sharjeel BUT WILL THEY GET THE CHANCE IN MANY GAMES? I doubt it. So I am 50% excited.

If dropping Rehman is right because of him not belonging in T20 that might be right but not keeping him for tests is a disaster if that were to be the case. He has won a test match for us this year because of his batting which always impresses me, at least for Pak players. Its useful.

Zulfiqar Babar is fine, but is he T20 material? I doubt it. He is also easy to read after awhile for the short time that Ive seen him but I could be wrong, it would be nice to see more to be able to judge his qualities.

Where is Umar Gul? Mystery. And F Alam for test/ODI makes sense.

  • on December 2, 2013, 10:20 GMT

jamshed is averaging above 60 in asia so he should definetly be kept in asia cup, still missing our future hammad azam he should be selected in at least tests with his bowling and batting advantages in test, fawad alam is not ODI player but definetly a test player and shan masood should be tried in odi, yasser hameed should also be given another chance in tests. we need a proper wicket keeper batsman in ODI and test which we have 2 best options muhammad salman (faisalabad wolves) or muhammad rizwan or zulqarnain haider. imran nazeer and yasser arafat in t20 world cup

  • on December 2, 2013, 8:24 GMT

After loosing many series the series finally the selectors are taking bold and good desion. SARJEEL KHAN is a good choice .so trying out different players are always good u might get one for the future in them like Muhammed Amir...like to see Await Zia, Hammad Azam and Raza Hasan in place of Sohail Tanvir, Umer Amin.Team needs more cricket knowledge and sense on the field .I really feel shoot Maksood should bat at # 3 as he has 2 fifties so why change his position and Umer Akmal at # 4 be coz he should be given time to play his game freely he a attaking batsman .He is been just waster at no 6 .Haffez should bat at least at no 5 and 6 and try to finish the game as a captain or else should retire himself be coz he is just taking a place of a new comer .see Afridi bat at 7 and fails so he plays asa bowler...nor a batsman..Haffez should do the same.best of luck..selectors are doing a great job plz keep a eye in under 19 cricket team there are future hero's in this current under 19 team.

  • on December 2, 2013, 8:12 GMT

@mzm149: idelly it should be that way. all failing players should be dropped. but thats not how our cricket works. i said it not in their favour or justifying their selection. i said it that they are being selected just because of their name other wise their performance was not good. i dont see any other reason for their selection apart from this. not justified though.

  • on December 2, 2013, 8:06 GMT

Please add fawad ahmed in Odi Squad. I don't understand why??

  • on December 2, 2013, 8:03 GMT

hamaad azam and hassan raza ??? Can't believe they aren't in the squad.

  • mzm149 on December 2, 2013, 7:56 GMT

@Khurram S Chaudhary: I meant if one failing player is dropped other two should be dropped not the other way round that all should be retained. On one hand you are saying that no player should be above team and on the other hand you say Afridi and Hafeez are there for their name.

Nasir Jamshed is not my relative and I am not a selector. It is a good sign when a player performs for a good year and half. Then he completely goes missing. Mishandling of players, specially batsmen, has been part and parcel of Pakistan cricket and it will continue to be.

  • on December 2, 2013, 7:37 GMT

hammad azam and raza hassan are the future heroes of pakistan cricket. both are confident and have some international exposure also. why are they forgotten so easily?

  • on December 2, 2013, 6:55 GMT

@mzm149: thats not good logic that if 2failing players playing then 3rd should be there as well. they are selected for their reasons which nasir has not got. hafeez n afridi will make it in because of name and bowling &1off innings.

politics will always be there but that didnt mean that he should be kept in team because of that. i said it before this odi series in SA that more delay will only damage him more & it was the case. last month they were having plenty of domestic cricket and would have given him enough time. but now it is not the case. he has done enough so if he performs in domestic then he wont be easy to ignore

if sharjeel performs then its good for team. should we think about our team winning by any player or should we think about player? for me its 1st. it doesnt matter who plays. yes sharjel will perform according to his capacity but from a team supporter tht "hope he fails" even before 1st game. if he fails team will suffer no 1 else.

  • on December 2, 2013, 6:48 GMT

  • on December 2, 2013, 5:54 GMT

Would people please stop asking for Razzak, Malik and all of these older players to come back into the squad? They've had their time their performance in the T20 in Dubai was enough of an example. They've had their chances our team needs to grow for the future and for that we have to start excluding older players who are not performing. I can watch new players losing a match because they will learn and grow. We have to be future oriented if we expect our team to win.

  • AleemLatif on December 2, 2013, 3:46 GMT

We need more batsmen to be tried in the squad. So, Sharjeel, Harris should be given more chances in the upcoming series. Selectors also need to pick more talent from the current local T20 tournament. Pls keep Shoab Malik/Razzaq/Rehman/Farhat/Younis out of the squad. Anwar Ali is no good with bowling with his line and length and speed. Bring in Gul. Sohail Tanvir is good for T20. Sohaib maqsood is good inclusion along with Bilawal.

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on December 2, 2013, 0:50 GMT

  • Haz95 on December 1, 2013, 22:27 GMT

Brilliant squad, Tanvir isn't exactly my go to man but remember he's a decent death bowler...Amin I believe is talented, he is just struggling fairly, that's why he blasted a quick 25 attempting to save his spot, please don't ruin him, keep him and Haris along with 1 more new comer fawad and pak has a secure test line up. Let Jamshed gain form too. t20 XI. S Khan, A Shehzad, U Akmal,S Maqsood, M Hafeez, H Sohail, B Bhatti, A Ali/S Tanvir, S Afridi, S Ajmal, Z Babar/ J Khan. I doubt the inclusion of Babar will happen since our spin Trio is very, very strong.

  • Fineline on December 1, 2013, 22:20 GMT

  • Short_pitch_ball on December 1, 2013, 20:26 GMT

I wish and pray for the success of haris sohail and sharjeel khan, these guys are very talented and if utilised properly, can be the match winners. Haris sohail is an amazing cricketing stroke making player and sharjeel is a guy who know the definition of control aggression. They both shall me retained for ODI as well - hafeez shall bat at no 6 - Nasir must hire personal batting coach for him self to improve is batting. I just could nt believe the guys, saying he is a technical correct player. First things he cannot play square of the wkt, which is strength of all LHB in the world and as a result he cannot cut the good length and short balls and playing them with a vertical bat on swinging ball, one who plays cricket can imagine this great technical flaw .Secondly, to overcome this situation he started playing all the balls on leg side now and if u watch him closely his blade is always facing towards leg, while playing any length ball outside off stump.

  • on December 1, 2013, 20:14 GMT

I dont uncerstand why u take all the time Sohail Tanveer, give more chance to Anwer Ali,he looks talented allround.and we need also 5 fast bowlers for world Cup 2015.Harris Sohail is a good choice but IF n IF he would b given a chance in playing Eleven.Harris have been in squad many time but in playing eleven only i or 2 time.it is unfair. Why u drop Rehman ? he can make 15-20 score at nr 9,.

  • on December 1, 2013, 20:12 GMT

Generally the team selected is good but I would have liked the selectors to persist with Jamshed as he is a quality batsman and will come good. I do not think Sohail Tanvir is good enough to be in the Pakistan team either in T20 or ODI. It is good young players are being given opportunities to represent Pakistan as soon players like Hafeez and Afridi would have to be replaced due to their inconsistent performance with the bat. Furthermore, they are simply not good enough against good quality bowling. I hope Umar Gul returns to the team soon as he is a quality bowler especially in this format. I also would like to see Kamran Akmal in the T20 squad as wicket keeper / batsman as I want Umar Akmal to solely focus on his batting.

  • somethingdifferent on December 1, 2013, 20:09 GMT

Very good and sensible selection. Good to see young players like Sharjeel Khan and Haris Sohail in the squad instead of likes Shoaib Malik and Abdur Razzaq, which will be beneficial in the long run. However they should be given an extended run to prove themselves. I would have liked to see Raza Hasan and Awais Zia for this format, as well. I suggest that once Nasir Jamshed plays some domestic cricket and gets his form back he should be drafted back in the side.

  • mzm149 on December 1, 2013, 20:02 GMT

@khurram S Chaudhary: you mentioned 3 or 4 other players that should be rested. But why are they playing still? Why just drop one player?

It's your wishful thinking that he would have made comeback after playing 2 weeks of domestic cricket. This is Pakistan where players don't make come back easily due to politics or whatever may be the reason. Examples are in front of you. Ahmed Shehzad came after breaks of almost 2 years twice. Nasir made his first comeback after 3 years. Taufiq Umar came after 6 years. Misbah and Hafeez came after 3 years.

As far as I think, Jamshed's career is over at least for 3 years. So we should close this discussion. Even if I wish or not Sharjeel Khan will perform according to his capacity.

  • on December 1, 2013, 20:00 GMT

@mzm149: and they should try new players here and there. because thats how you build your bench strength. for example in 3 rd odi yesterday, our bench strength was exposed badly when we went in with asad, amin, tanvir and rehman.

by giving new players chances in here and there we will know which youngster is good. and then we will have a pool of few players from where we can select best 14-15. otherwise if a player gets injured or out of form then we will end up with a completely new guy or back to old faliures. thats how you see farhat, malik, kamran, and few more back in again and again because we have either same players or some new from domestic who will be totally unknown.

you can look at SA how a player sitting on bench comes in and perform better. that gives you more solid options.

  • on December 1, 2013, 19:33 GMT

@mzm149: nasir was not performing for such long time along with few others. he has missed only 5 odis this year and played all others so how is that here and there series? this excuse can be given for umar amin/shafiq but not for nasir.

nasir was out of form unlike rohit. total difference. best thing for nasir to be playing in domestic. they already delayed it. it should have been done 2 weeks ago and he would have been back by now. that logic doesnt mean that you wish for a young player to fail even before his 1 st game. why shouldnt we try a good young player for a failing one? should be done for 3-4 more players in this squad. shall v keep selecting failing players for whole year? do you think they will bring back nasir for odis if sharjeel fails in t20?

same logic of yours should be applied to anwar ali then? why were you calling for him to be dropped after 1 bad game? his bowling needs improvement and he is not that good bowler but do you think 3 games are enough for him?

  • on December 1, 2013, 19:19 GMT

I was impressed with umer amin opening score although it was only 25 he played both side of the wicket and was fearless. I hope everyone stop knocking umer amin coz his quick 25 35 gives the batting team confidence and the counters the consistent tuk tuk which has a negative impact.

  • mzm149 on December 1, 2013, 18:58 GMT

@Khurram S Chaudhary: We should persist with players to prepare them for world cups instead of bringing 2, 3 new players in every game. How are you guaranteed that new players will stay till World Cup? Giving players a series here and series there is what PCB is good at. Look at at India. How long did they persist with Rohit Sharma? He started delivering after 100 plus ODIs. If was a Pakistani, who would have given him such a long rope?

I am unable to understand the role of sohail tanvirhis place is not justified in the team in the presence of alot of talented seamers in domestic like muhammad thala, najaf shah, ehsan adil etc. Tough anwar ali is good with his bat but i think if we select him for his batting ability then why not hamad azam????

  • Saadcricketlover on December 1, 2013, 18:26 GMT

Excellent selection. I think we could've had Raza Hasan instead of zulfiqar Babar, because he is only 21 and babar is nearly 35, but still raza hasan needs to improve he has been good but also very expensive sometimes in domestic, he could be added with babar so he could improve, he is a good prospect for pakistan.

  • zarasochozarasamjho on December 1, 2013, 16:52 GMT

Glad Gul has been kept out - he has now become a failed bowler, incapable of taking wickets and gives away too many runs - his yorker has deserted him completely as batsmen have worked him out. His batting has never been good, apart from a couple of good knocks (but with no positive outcome for the team) in 50 odd innings.

  • imranmujtaba on December 1, 2013, 16:49 GMT

Good team, much better selection then in past - I hope they keep same team in ODI only bring Asad instead of Umar Amin, and possibly Afridi as a captain. no doubt bowlers if they are fit.

Nasir is poosibly good batsmen but he is out of form and poor fielder.

  • on December 1, 2013, 16:45 GMT

Pakistan already has 3 established reliable spinners, so no scope for Zulfiqar at his age nor is there scope for Sohail tanveer. Hammad azam would have been a better choice with forh coming 20/20 ICC championship in March2014.

  • synergy on December 1, 2013, 16:03 GMT

A good selection but I fail to understand the logic of including Sohail Tanvir after his dismal performance in the UAE & S Africa. I personally feel that Talha should have been picked instead of Sohail Tanvir as he has been performing brilantly in domestic cricket. I am very happy to see Sharjeel in the squad, he is a brilliant bat and a future star in the making.

  • laho111 on December 1, 2013, 16:01 GMT

Why umer amin again and again???? why didnt add shahzeb hasan, serfaraz who is high scorer in recent T20 cup and fawad alam.....why sohail tanveer again without performance. Nice to see Sherjeel khan

  • mzm149 on December 1, 2013, 15:52 GMT

@Prasanna_310: This happens in Pakistan. They don't groom youngsters. They destroy their confidence by pushing them in and pulling them out of team for no good reason, restrict them from playing their natural game and have different criteria of selection for different players.

  • Sports4Youth on December 1, 2013, 15:31 GMT

What good has Umar AMIN done to be selected again. In his comparision NASIR JAMSHED had alteast proven his worth on so many occassions. I dont like the idea of bring in ZULFIQAR Babar at almost 35. But the worst part of the decision is the inclusion of Sohail TANVIR. Also since taking up Wicket keeping job, Umar AKMAL is not doing great as a batsman. I would prefer Umar Akmal as a specialist batsman in limited overs games, his fielding is also good. Better to bring in RIZWAN or SARFRAZ for the wicket keeping duties.

  • RMCroos on December 1, 2013, 15:25 GMT

I completely agree. I just dont understand, what is it about TANVIR that the selectors like him so much. And Worst part is that MISBAH plays Tanvir in the eleven at the expense of JUNAID. Always we are told that he can bat. But I dont remember him ever having made any meaningful contributilon with the bat. HIS BOWLING IS BECOMING USELESS AT THE PACE OF 133 KMPH.

    .

  • on December 1, 2013, 15:23 GMT

Also Misbah Should be in T20 Squad against SL

  • on December 1, 2013, 15:22 GMT

  • on December 1, 2013, 15:22 GMT

nasir jamshed is very good prospectus. y sohail???.. and in one day hafeez must be dropped,, n thay have to consider muhammad rizwan as well.. imad waseem can replace hafeez, he is left handed batsman, and he is a great performer. raza hassan is also our future in our lef spin bowling, adnan rasool is good prospectus for offspin bowling, haris sohail can give depth to middle order batting, najaf shah and ahmad jamal is also our future in fast bowling

  • Sports4Youth on December 1, 2013, 15:19 GMT

Inclusion of SHARJEEL Khan is great news for Pakistan. He should be given fair opportunity. He can provide the much required stability to the ever failiing top order.

Though I am not happy about JAMSHED's exclusion. I think Jamshed is a good talent, he is young. His failures against a strong bowling unit of Styen & Co.should not be taken very seriously, especially when the entire Pakistani team was failing. He will definately bounce back, provided he is given fair opportunities.

Leaving out ABDUL REHMAN is the right call, but he should not have been the the limited overs leg of SA in the first place. ZULFIQAR BABAR is just 8 days away form becoming 35 yrs of age. One mush question the wisdom of bringing him in at this late age. also Ajmal is already 36, this is not good for the development of the team, especialy when Pakistan already have so many spinners and young fast bowlers coming up.

  • on December 1, 2013, 15:11 GMT

Finally good to see some young talent prevailing in the team. Hope it will be competitive contest,!

  • on December 1, 2013, 15:11 GMT

@Sachit1979: How is time running out for Haris Sohail? That guy has played only 1 T20 and batted in 3 ODis. Although he averages 50+ in FC, he hasn't yet played any test match. I don't see the logic of your statement, but you are right about Umer Amin. However immensely talented he is, he has yet to mark his authority. I found him very good while he was opening in the last game against SA, but as always, he couldn't convert.

  • on December 1, 2013, 15:10 GMT

good selection. near to perfect. nasir had to be dropped as he was not in form for many games. many people here are saying that they should have continued with him. i think selectors already delayed this decision. he should have been sent to domestic 2 weeks ago. still 1 domestic event is going on so its good for him to play some games.

finally sharjeel got a call and haris sohail returned. hope they will be selected to right format after t20s. haris has good 1 st class stats and sharjeel list A.

umar gul is fit and playing domestic so i dont know why he is bit there. irfan is still out of form.

i think that malik and razak will be sidelined for some time because of bhatti and anwar. both unfit at moment.

umar amin and sohail some how made it again. didnt justify place. but i dont think both will be in playing 11. ahmed-sharjeel- hafeez- maqsood- umar- haris- bhatti- afridi- anwar- ajmal- junaid

  • Equanimous on December 1, 2013, 14:45 GMT

It is disappointing to see that Jamshed has been left out. We needed to persevere with him and he would have come good. Extreme short sightedness on the part of selectors.

  • Prasanna_310 on December 1, 2013, 14:45 GMT

Jamshed's exclusion was easy option for selectors but not a wise one I'm afraid. He is clearly the best batsman in the lineup who is having worst run of form. He should not be discarded for future series though. I don't like Afridi in the team to, especially when they are looking to experiment. They cannot leave out Ajmal and with Afridi there and Hafeez being the captain, they can test no youngster. Raza Hasan had troubled Gayle in his golden patch of form, and even the indians. It is very harsh for him..

  • syed.r.karim on December 1, 2013, 14:41 GMT

form india, I am happy with the Excellent squad but the umar amin. Hammad Azam is the most unlucky as he has not been given fare chance to proof himself, I am waiting for One day squad, who knows the non performer jamshed, rehaman, Wahab , shoaib malik may be selected again.

  • mzm149 on December 1, 2013, 14:37 GMT

Umar Gul should have been selected instead of Anwar Ali. Junaid Khan should not play hit and giggle t20 so that he should be injury free for ODIs and tests. Bhatti and Tanvir should play with Babar and Ajmal as specialist spinners. Playing XI in first game will be:

    1. Shehzad 2. Hafeez 3. Maqsood 4. Harris 5. Akmal 6. Amin 7. Afridi 8. Bhatti 9. Tanvir 10. Babar / Junaid 11. Ajmal

  • on December 1, 2013, 14:33 GMT

How does Sohail Tanvir justify his place in the eleven, kukri shouldn't be included given his recent performances and also given he is a BOWLER that too a mediocre one and saeed ajmal is a better batsmen than him..

  • Sachit1979 on December 1, 2013, 14:24 GMT

Looks like a promising selection this time. Sharjeel if he could make use this opportunity could be a long term solution for Pakistan for their opening batting woes. Time is running out for Umar Amin and Haris Sohal too. They are talented but may not get more opportunities if don't deliver on this. Bowling looks balanced. May be Gul's addition could have augmented the depth in bowling. Overall from here, everything depends on their game plan. Hafeez, Afridi and Umar Akmal are more experienced in this pool now and expected to take more responsibility in batting.

  • sevugapandian on December 1, 2013, 14:20 GMT

  • ICCexpert.... on December 1, 2013, 14:12 GMT

Sharjeel should play all 3 t20s and should be a part of the of the one day series as well, he should play all 5 one dayers against Sri-Lanka, he needs time to prove his talent. He is arguably the best opener in the Pak right now.

  • soaf on December 1, 2013, 14:02 GMT

pakistan must get rid of sohail tanvir.pakistan is in a desperate need of a t20 fast bowler, someone like umar gul. junaid khan also is not a t20 material.his t20 record speaks it all.good to see some youngsters in the team.good to see irfan not included coz pakistan should take care of him for major wc2015 as he has every potential to be a menacing prospect in both odis and test.

  • ICCexpert.... on December 1, 2013, 13:57 GMT

First of let me mention that by selecting this young team Pak selectors are looking for the future, WC t20 and WC 2015. Or it might be the performance of the young guns like Shahzad, Bhatti and Anwar that has forced them to do so. The selection of Sharjeel shows that hard work pays, he should be persisted with and given full series so that he can prove his talent. I feel the selectors have been a little harsh with Hammad Azam and Hasan Raza, they have been in excellent form especially hammad with both bat and ball in the Faysal t20 cup. So I would only change Hammad for Anwar Ali and when Irfan is fit he should replace Sohaill Tanvir. Good luck team Pakistan

  • on December 1, 2013, 13:54 GMT

That looks like a fantastic squad!! I'm delighted to see the likes of Haris, Sharjeel and the return of Zulfiqar, who has been a revelation for Pak ever since his debut. Although, I'm disappointed to not see Gul in that squad because he is the best fast bowler in this format and is just as good with the bat as Anwar Ali, hence he should have been there instead of Anwar and Amin for Hammad or Ehsan would have been ideal.

  • Jda123 on December 1, 2013, 13:53 GMT

Good squad but a shame no Gul...

Jamshed had to be dropped was very poor, if Hafeez he fails in the T20 to make runs he should be dropped from ODI also.

Rehman should be in the Test squad but a good team

  • mainul079080 on December 1, 2013, 13:51 GMT

Pakistan selectors are now beginning to follow the path of Bangladesh. Being brave to to select the newcomers who are performers of domestic cricket will surely bring good results.I think Hafeez is a dynamic captain, experimenting the newcomers, not hesitating to include any performers in his squad. He should be praised for the selection, as he is the captain. But Misbah is afraid of best performers in domestic cricket- Haris Sohail and Fawad Alam to include them in ODIs and tests .They are better ODI and test elements than T20.It is high time to give Hafeez ODI captaincy.

  • on December 1, 2013, 13:51 GMT

I think Hafeez should be rested for the T20I agaisnt Afghnaistan, and Umar Amin should be captain and he should play at no.4 position. My Squad would be: A.Shehzad S.Maqsood H.Sohail U.Amin(C) Sharjeel Khan U.Akmal S.Afridi B.Bhatti A.Ali Z.Babar J.Khan/S.Tanvir

Dropping Nasir Jamshed from t20 is not a bad decision. But he must definitely be part of ODI squad. He is an excellent ODI player. He is not cut out for t20 because he is technically sound batsman who builds his innings instead of blind slogging.

  • on December 1, 2013, 13:30 GMT

Finally a good squad! Good to see Sharjeel, Haris and Zulfi there! Finally Jamshed is out, I'm sure Sharjeel will play because Haeez doesn't like opening anymore! Haris should play! It should be the same squad in the ODIs, only Misbah should be added and it will be 15 instead of 14! InshaAllah Pakistan will whitewash!

With the SA daemons behind them, I hope Hafeez, Shahzad score some runs otherwise they should be dropped from T20 team. Afridi should consider himself lucky to be in the team given his complete failure with the bat on SA tour. All in all, good selection.

2 disappointing inclusions are Umar Amin & Sogail Tanvir. Have not done much to justify place but as long as they are not in playing 11 most will be ok with it.
