India in South Africa 2010-11 January 19, 2011

Albie, van Wyk drafted in for remaining ODIs

53

Albie Morkel, the South Africa allrounder, has replaced batsman David Miller in the squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs against India. Both players have not been included in South Africa's squad for the 2011 World Cup. Morne van Wyk, who is part of the 15-man squad for that tournament, has also been drafted in for the remaining ODIs.

"We've included Albie to assist with the balance of our squad in the absence of Jacques Kallis," Mohammad Moosajee, South Africa's team manager, told ESPNcricinfo. "We need someone to bat at No. 7, because we had Johan Botha coming in there, so we've now got Albie."

Miller managed just 36 runs in two innings while his contender for the middle-order spot Faf du Plessis struck a half-century on debut to secure a place in the World Cup squad.

India lead the series 2-1.

Smith has no idea how to use players. First he destroyed Albie, by putting him at number 6/7 and calling him to bowl in the powerplays. If Smith was the captain when Kallis was new, I think he would have sent Kallis to no. 7 and ask him to score quick fifties in every match.

Smith/ SA has to understand that not everyone is Lance Klusener. And even he couldn't do both the finishing job and good bowling for a long time.

Now it's time for David Miller's career. This is sheer stupidity.

I heard some rumours here that had Albie not played for SA until next week, he would have qualified to play for England, and England would have taken this opportunity hands down; and just to spoil the pommie plan, SA selectors picked him in the squad... Not sure how true it is though

I am a Pakistani and its good to know that selection blunders are not limited to our team only lol..Albie Morkel would have been a better choice than Robin Pietersen any given day!! The only reason I can come up for Pietersen`s inclusion in the WC side is the quota system in South Africa..lastly, I dont understand the hype about South Africa being the favorites in the world cup..they cant chase 191 at home against India and then let them win when they should have finished the match easily, goes to show their chokers tag is well deserved!!

resting steyn who is certain the bowling line up should have been - ablie, mclaren,, tosobe, parnel with tahir and peiterson. CSA should understand this series win was needed or testing the 13th, 14th and 15th player to make the list final for WC. they have gone the wrong way with peiterson, tahir not tested. waht will happen is kalis is unfit. Is parnel better or mclaren, or albe no one knows not even SA. is VAN WYK better or a second batsmen. Totaly Wrong? India Aalso should have played aswin or chowla

Remember what Mahinder Amarnath said about selection panel? He was not talking about Indian panel alone. This "Bunch of Jokers" is an elite club. India and Pak are founder member. England's membership was signed after that Pattinson (who) selection. Aus was recently included after Beer's selection. Leaving Albie out of WC squad? Ahhhh. Welcome to this elite club SA.

The Confidence that Dhoni is having on Albie is missing with Smith . This is where the difference lies between dhoni and smith . Dhoni Retained Albie for CSK . I am sure he'd have definitely insisted the CSK owners to retain him . But in case of Smith, he is not good at choosing players and not good at measuring the talent possessed by each player and thats why Dhoni is Successful than Smith .

I thought Albie's career was over. His hitting abilities have diminished greatly and he's not able to clear the field. Good news for India.

  • soorajiyer on January 20, 2011, 8:22 GMT

We would anyday have him in our team!

  • Kirstenfan on January 20, 2011, 8:06 GMT

@Seether1 - spot on, Robin P is not the answer, unless the question is "who played 39 ODIs over 9 years with a bowling average of 53 and once got hit for 26 in an over by Lara, yet went to 3 World Cups"...

  • A.Afker on January 20, 2011, 7:45 GMT

CSA too late now. If Albie was there SA already been made the series against IND.I think CSA is done big mistake in ongoing IND series as well as in WC selection. Since Kallis is not played they should have included Albie & Van Wyk instead of Miller & Ingram. Miller and Ingram shown in their inexperience in 2nd and 3rd ODI. If Albie was there he will carry SA to the victory in the 2nd ODI for sure. Further he can bowled at least few overs as well. He has lot of experience in the international arena. He know better than others about IND pitches since he played IPL in IND. Albie not playing mean that is good news for other teams but not for SA for sure.

  • tirtha16 on January 20, 2011, 7:03 GMT

my pick for last two ODI s

    SA:: 1>Smith 2> Amla 3> Ingram 4> AB 5> JP 6> du Plesis 7> Albi 8> Botha 9> Morne 10> Styen 11> Tostsobe

    IND:: 1>Rohit 2> Parthiv 3> Kholi 4>Yuvraj 5> MSD 6> Raina 7> Yusuf 8>Harbhajan 9> Chawla/ Ashwin 10> Zaheer 11> Munaf

  • Abhiramb on January 20, 2011, 6:55 GMT

Also look at it the other way...... "Albie playing last 2 ODIs because Kallis can not!" - what happens if - "IF" Kallis gets a niggle and has to sit out of a few matches in the world cup? Will selectors then repent that they did not take Albie in 15? Great blunder to keep him out of the squad for the WC!! Anyway....good for India :-)

  • crimson518 on January 20, 2011, 6:51 GMT

Why is everyone going on about Albie not being in the squad. He hasn't put in a match winning performance in a long time and is way to inconsistend. It's not his fault though. The team managers have never used him right. Awlays pushing him down the order and then not leaving him any time to get his eye in and bat a decent innings. Plus if our top order batsman would play sensibly for once and not throw wickets away we won't need the big hitters at the end. The thing people should be complaining about is Rusty not being in the team. He is a much better bowler than Parnell and should be givin a chance to prove it in this ODI series. My WC squad: Smith, Van Wyk(wk), Amla, Kallis, De Villiers, Duminy, Du Plessis, Botha, Steyn, Morkel, Theron (or Tahir depending on the pitch.) Top batsmen down to 7 and more than enough bowling options.

  • on January 20, 2011, 6:45 GMT

@Srinibas... Sachin is in India no SA... get your facts right man...

  • Seether1 on January 20, 2011, 6:42 GMT

If you Indian fans think your selectors are bad, you have obviously never been exposed to the SA selectors. These guys take stupidity to a whole new level. Would have expected better of Andrew Hudson, who seems like an intelligent and level-headed man. Lets just hope that excluding Albie was a wake-up call he needed and they include him in the WC squad, which can still be changed before 8 Feb. i can't believe this is going to be Robin Peterson's third WC. He has done nothing to warrant his place. He is more famous for getting whacked by Brian lara than for his bowling.

  • Vatto on January 20, 2011, 6:40 GMT

U cant have a more bizzare selection. Albie has been an exceptional athlete... Thats the word... Athlete. He can contribute equally with bat, bowl and especially his outfielding and throwing... He was chennai's best bet... He was their best player in Australia in the ODI's. Dont know what went wrong with the South African selection. Anyone who can say his bowling is poorer than Wayne Parnell is a joker. And he is the crowd's favorite here... Miss u albie...

  • Chennai_mr on January 20, 2011, 6:28 GMT

Message to SouthAfrican Cricket Association. Albie was performing consistentaly for the past 3 years in IPL. out of 3 ..2 held in india. A very useful hitter in the lower order and a wicket taking bowler. Chennai super king respects Albie ability and they have retained him for their next season then why the hell South African cricket association not giving him a chance. Guys am very confident Albie is a very good performer under pressure and will definetely break in to top 15..

  • catalyst213 on January 20, 2011, 6:01 GMT

Albie is not only a great player but he is player who knows conditions in the sub-continent very well. If Dhoni was leading SA im sure he'll pick Albie up for his ability to change the game with the bat if not with the ball. SA lost 2nd odi because of the long tail and the 3rd one too. Are the selectors sure of what they are doing ?

  • GlobalCricketLover on January 20, 2011, 5:29 GMT

selecting Parnell ahead of Albie is ridiculous. Parnell is leaking runs and ruining the good work done by the other 3 seamers. Also no way matches the big hitting of Albie. They should replace Parnell with Albie and it would be a solid unit to win the world cup.

  • KunzMan on January 20, 2011, 5:23 GMT

I just read in this column comments and on facebook that teams can change the squad before Feb 8. Is this new authentic? Hope Albie gets in for Peterson in that case.

  • paapu4u on January 20, 2011, 5:09 GMT

Very good allrounder, not selected for the world cup!! This will be a great blunder. truly he is far better than peterson, amla in ODI's. Even dhoni retained him in IPL and what is CSA is thinking? He is well suited for subcontinent conditions. I saw him playing in chennai for the IPL matches. I had glimpse still. when he is playing in chennai ground, such a clean striker of cricket ball (3 sixes against DD aty final over. WOW). One of the clean hitter of spinners and seamers at pressure situations. he have to be consider for the WC.

  • on January 20, 2011, 4:41 GMT

If India wants to secure a memorable series win in South Africa, they must rest Murali Vijay for last two one dayers and allows Rohit Sharma to oepn with Sachin. This series win could evetually be a moral boster for Indians before the world cup.

  • timus6778 on January 20, 2011, 4:10 GMT

make albie play for India if it's okay with the proteas,,:P

  • indianzen on January 20, 2011, 4:03 GMT

I think the World cup squad annoucements is just a screw to tighten up the players, if the players play well in the mathces before Feb 8, they will be included in the squad replacing the non performers, unlike Indian Team. If Azharuddin would have remained active, he would still be playing as a middle order batsmen and a huge price in IPL 4 !

  • ammarh on January 20, 2011, 3:34 GMT

Don't play him in tests makes sense, leaving him out in odi,s does'nt. I see him as best current one day all rounder. He can bowl, can hit it a long way, what else u need in modern oneday games.

  • on January 20, 2011, 3:24 GMT

this is unfair they know that Albie can win them matches coming at No 7 but they haven't selected him for world cup . what they are thinking

  • sidganesh on January 20, 2011, 3:02 GMT

That's the biggest selection blunder in the history of WC! I'm sorry but what the hell were CSA thinking! Albie will be in the starting XI in ANY ODI side! Disappointed!

  • on January 20, 2011, 2:39 GMT

albie should play for south africa....he can bat well in pressure situation...remember his part in winning ipl 3 and champions trophy...dhoni always prefers him in the squad...he s a match winner and am sure abt it...SA ll definitely feel his absence in wc11

  • on January 20, 2011, 2:27 GMT

i want india to win one more match nd let dhoni to have a rest so that parthiv can be tried.we will see nd yeah this can be a second major tournament india wins under dhoni after we won in australia.

That's useless right now.I heard teams can still change their squad until february 8.If s.africa selectors haven't put their brains on their shoes, they'll replace peterson with A.morkel/r.mclaren.

  • Jim1207 on January 20, 2011, 0:07 GMT

I think selectors have announced wrong squads for World Cup and for last 2 ODIs. :D They must have been misplaced or exchanged over night by some intruders!!

  • number-09 on January 20, 2011, 0:00 GMT

I am from the West Indies, and really surprised that Albie is not in the world cup squad. Albie has saved SA on many occasions. Strange. Was looking forward to his game changing batting. One of the guys I really enjoy when batting.

  • on January 19, 2011, 23:36 GMT

I am not SAfrican but the last I remember of Albie was a batman being able to blast boundaries. The fact that he is not is the WC squad is a surprise to me. Many teams will be feeling a little bit better knowing that he is not going to be in the SA lineup. Knowing that SA has chocked on the big stage I think Albie would be perfect in the lower order slot. I think that SA has really suffered by the lack of the guys at the bottom to win them matches. The second ODI against India was basically thrown away. Mornie may be a better bowler but to me Albie is a better ODI hitter in the latter overs.

  • funky_dude on January 19, 2011, 21:56 GMT

This kinda sucks..I doubt Smith will play Albie...in case he does draft him into the team, what will selectors do if he ends up making good scores ??? Why on earth he's not included in the WC team at first is a big mystery we all will never get the answer of...

  • on January 19, 2011, 19:17 GMT
