India in Sri Lanka 2012 July 13, 2012

Irfan replaces injured Vinay Kumar

ESPNcricinfo staff

Irfan Pathan, the India allrounder, will join the squad for the Sri Lanka tour after fast bowler Vinay Kumar was ruled out with a hamstring injury. Vinay will be sidelined for three weeks, and will miss the short limited-overs series that starts on July 21.

"Obviously, when I was overlooked initially, I was thinking about what are the areas I needed to work upon and was focussing on my training at the National Cricket Academy," Irfan told PTI.

"I am pretty satisfied with the hours that I have put in at the nets and in the indoor sessions there. After this call-up, the focus will shift to the Lankan series."

Irfan made a comeback to the national squad after almost three years when he was included during West Indies' tour of India in December 2011. Since then, he has played in India's last two ODI series - the Asia Cup in March, where he was preferred over Ravindra Jadeja and the CB series in Australia. He took five wickets, including a four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka, in the three matches during the Asia Cup at an average of 32 and got six wickets in the four he played in Australia. However, neither Irfan nor Jadeja were included in the original squad for the Sri Lanka series, with the emphasis of selections being on specialists rather than allrounders.

"I played 8 ODIs after my comeback and have got 13 wickets. I have scored around 100 runs in the five innings that I have batted. For someone like me, the more I play international matches, the better I will get," he said.

India will play five ODIs and one Twenty20 during the tour which starts with an ODI in Hambantota.

@ Ramesh Dharshana Perera, I think you are still not recovered from WC final. We Indians understand it and respect your emotion.

@akbarbirbal007 U want to make SL players also FLAT PITCH KINGS. No way. It is better to play in SL High School matches rather than RANJI Trophy.

@ Srilankan fans - Indians maybe flat pitch kings.... but we are always on the srilanka.... even in australia srilanka lost to india .... in bangladesh you guys lost too ... pathetic... i expect india would win this series 3-2 or 4-1 ... srilanka has good chances to win this series if it rains .. .D/L rule .. cunning tricks .. luck... Moreover this series will be boring for indian fans... So many matches played between india and srilanka ... and we are really bored of beating srilanka... The tournament would be India vs Pakistan ... eagerly waiting for that epic war... where real lions and tigers clash unlike toothless srilankan lions..

Indian Selectors & BCCI explained India's batting failure was responsible for their Whitewash in Australia both in ODI's + in the Test series. If that is the case, what batting changes have been made in the squad selected for the SL Tour? I see apart from Tendulkar opting out, NONE. Gambhir & Sehwag are still the openers. Kohli, Raina, Rohit Sharma the middle order followed by Dhoni, Irfan, Ashwin + 3 other bowlers. Tiwary & Rehane have been in the squad for at least 3 squads now, mostly warming the bench along with Rahul Sharma. These 3 may still be doing the same job. There is absolutely no change in the batting selected despite the Selectors explaining the Aussie defeats was due to poor batting. I find this very disturbing. If the batsmen fail replace them with new guys. Otherwise we will have a repeat of reckless batting seen in Australia. At the moment the Weak Indian bowling looks stronger than its batting with ZAK, Yadev, Irfan(?), Ashwin & Ojha(?).Result: Anybody's guess!.

Indians are the flat pitch kings,..Sri Lanka plays well in every conditions these days and we proved it in Australia , Eng and SA...Also SL pitches arent flat and NO team has chased 250 + score in Sri Lanka vs Sri Lanka...But SL playing India is boring..I preffer watching SL vs Nambia rather than them playing boring Indian FLAT pitch kings !
