Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 1st Test, Galle June 19, 2012

Misbah-ul-Haq suspended for over-rate offence

ESPNcricinfo staff
101

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has been suspended by the ICC from the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle because his team was found guilty of a "serious over-rate offence" during the fifth ODI in Colombo on Monday.

Pakistan were found to be three overs short of their target even after time allowances were taken into consideration. Following the defeat that cost them the series 3-1, Misbah pleaded guilty to the charge laid by the umpires and the penalties were accepted without the need for a formal hearing.

"As this was Pakistan's first serious over-rate offence in the past 12 months, Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees handed Misbah two suspension points while each of his players received a 40% fine (10% for each of the first two overs and 20% for the additional over)," the ICC said in a statement, " … the imposition of two suspension points means that Misbah will now miss Pakistan's first Test against Sri Lanka which starts in Galle from Friday, since such suspension points are to be applied to the subsequent international matches in which Misbah is most likely to participate on a chronological basis immediately following the announcement of the decision."

Pakistan had also been fined for a slow over-rate in the opening ODI of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh in Dhaka on March 11, but that was a minor over-rate offence and not a "serious" one.

The suspension will cost Misbah the chance to break the Pakistan record for most consecutive Tests as captain. Misbah was on 15 Tests, with nine wins, five draws and one defeat. Abdul Hafeez Kardar was captain for 23 matches in a row, while Imran Khan and Waqar Younis had led Pakistan in 16 consecutive Tests.

  • Razbo on June 20, 2012, 7:55 GMT

I concur with the opinions expressed by several of the posters here as to the absurdity of Misbah's ban for tests when the infraction was related to ODI. ICC should revise this rule.

I also believe that Misbah has good temperament for batting in tests and in fact even for the one dayers given that no other Pak batsmen are able to apply themselves or take charge of a game. Also, we should give credit where credit is due: Pak has only lost one test in 15 with Misbah at the helm. That is an incredible achievement given the ineptness of the PCB and selectors, and lack of international cricket in Pak.

The last two ODI defeats against SL were shocking to say the least. I would blame the selectors for persisting with Sami and yes, Misbah for not being more assertive, imaginative and positive as a captain. He should not allow himself to be undermined by other players. He should be creative when the complexion of the game changes. Self-belief is what allowed SL to win both the last two games.

  • ExplicitPlatinum on June 20, 2012, 7:49 GMT

Since Hafeez will get the captaincy for this one Test match, everyone needs to realise that this is Hafeez's best format. He even admitted it. He's more of a predictable duckfarmer in ODI's and T20's but we must give him a chance here. Umar Akmal should have gotten selected for the Test series. Plus, Junaid Khan MUST be playing. I pray to Allah that he performs well.

  • TATTUs on June 20, 2012, 4:03 GMT

Ridiculous and stupid! Why would a One day cause a test match ban. If over rate is slow in ODIs, then the captain should be banned from ODIs and not tests.

  • on June 20, 2012, 3:10 GMT

Misbah is a good man and a cricketer, but I disagree with his capataincy in that whoever he plays, the field placement does not change irrespective of whether openers/known batsmen OR tailenders are batting. He never pressurizes a new batsman by bringing in fielders. I believe SL won the last 2 matches because of better captaincy by Jayawardene and Pakistan lost it by giving it away, by poor fielding and having Sami bowling ( in the 5th ODI). Sami is so-so bowler, and should never be given the bowl in the last 5-10 overs of the game. he gave 75 runs in 9.4 0vers, come on that is worse than school cricket stats. Good luck in Tests, but we need a CHANGE, a Big one. It seems a guy has to make one good score (40-80) or so and he becomes a regular in Pak team for the next 1-2 yrs, and hardly scores more than 0 to 20--30 or so. ]Players should not only be good in their specific roles but also be great fielders, if they do not do good in fielding, they should be axed for a few matches.

MISBAH Best Captain After Imran Khan ... No DOUBT

Loved him He Is Calm and Do Him Job with perfection. Has to be retained as captain as long as he is fit enough. So far best man to do the job for Pakistan.

  • on June 20, 2012, 0:50 GMT

He's has a very good record as captain with only one loss, which makes PAK close to unbeatable in tests. Pity he lost the ODI series and will be suspended for the 1st test. He has a very good test strategy but not so good in the limited overs game.

  • on June 20, 2012, 0:35 GMT

We cant blame ICC to have double standards this time ...DHONI has been suspended quite a few times coz of slow over rate.

  • Just_love_it on June 19, 2012, 23:44 GMT

So Afridi gonna get his test comeback call ,so he can retire once more from longest format of game ?

  • PakPacer on June 19, 2012, 23:21 GMT

This is bad news and i agree with Atif Subhani, we are going to rely to Azhar and possibly Asad, Asad is technically very sound but gets out b'c of impatience whether it be with rash shots or ill timed run outs. Mohammad Ayub should be tried in the middle order in place of Misbah. Also at what point will Mohammad Hafeez get criticized? as Doorie said, he really is the duckmaster.

  • on June 19, 2012, 23:21 GMT

O Come on, dont tell me that Younis Khan is going to lead Pakistan side.........

  • PAK-92 on June 19, 2012, 22:58 GMT

I reckon either Mohammad Ayub or Faisal Iqbal will play in the number 5 slot. The captaincy will probably be given to Hafeez or Younis but they are both badly out of form with the bat. If the PCB was brave, they would give it to Gul or Azhar Ali. And please play Junaid Khan as second seamer. Mohammad Sami will prove expensive and Aizaz Cheema is not as good as Junaid. Misbah will be a big loss for middle order because 2 of our top 6 are out of sorts and Taufeeq has no match practice. Hopefully the replacment will step up to the mark, and our spinners can do the job. Sri Lanka will be the favourites for this series, no doubt.

  • igorolman on June 19, 2012, 22:55 GMT

This is stupid. Why does bowling slowly in a one-dayer get you a Test ban? Very harsh on someone mostly responsible for bringing Pakistan out of a very dark place.

  • on June 19, 2012, 22:14 GMT

Pakistan need to stop old style batting. Pakistani opener M Hafiz strike rate is 67 lowest in the world. They need an opener like sehwag or santh jay sorya or somebody who can score quick. Hafiz is away too slow as an opener.

  • on June 19, 2012, 21:36 GMT

This ICC rule is a bit nonsense. He should be made to serve his suspension in the next ODI that his team plays - not in a test match. I don't see how it is fair to suspend a captain from a Test Match when his infraction was in an ODI match.

  • johnathonjosephs on June 19, 2012, 21:16 GMT

If the rain continues like this, I doubt this will matter because a draw is imminent

  • Mr.Shani on June 19, 2012, 21:08 GMT

Very bad news for Pakistan. Younus should be the captain for this test. Don't appoint hafeez captain and plz look for another specialist opening batsman. He has failed as a batsman. Just look his profile. He has a very ordinary average. Although he has proved himself a good bowler in limited overs. So there is no reason to drop him. We need his bowling in ODIs & T20s. Just change his batting order down to no. 6. And if he improves his batting technique (seems very accurate but needs to score consistently) then give him a chance in Test matches.

  • a.syed81 on June 19, 2012, 20:32 GMT

I suspect team management should introduce Afaq Raheem or Mohammad Ayub. Hafeez will be skipper I bat. In bowling Gul should company with Junaid Khan. No Sami plz

  • on June 19, 2012, 20:17 GMT

Huge damage for Pakistan but hope Misbah will lead Pakistan till his 40.

  • on June 19, 2012, 20:06 GMT

  • on June 19, 2012, 20:05 GMT

Not good news at all for Pakistan. The present batting line up without Misbah is in all sorts of trouble except Azhar Ali. And to some extent Asad. Pakistan would face serious problems in the first test match in these conditions. To me, SriLanka are already One up in the 3 match series.

  • Masking_Tape on June 19, 2012, 19:09 GMT

I feel bad for Pak fans. They lost the ODI series simply because of his 70's style batting and captaincy. This just shows he is just a overall slow guy. I really don't like him at all.

  • on June 19, 2012, 19:05 GMT

  • Mr_Attitude90 on June 19, 2012, 18:15 GMT

Certainly pak will miss Misbah in Galle test, In my view pcb would let younis to lead the team, hafeez should be rested. my 11 for ist test are, Toufique, Azhar, Younis(C), Asad, Ayub, Faisal, Adnan, Rehman, Ajmal, Gul, Rahat Ali

  • SamAsh07 on June 19, 2012, 17:57 GMT

Well they DID bowl 3.4 extra overs (considering the 22 extras). Tanvir may be good but he seriously needs to work on his bowling line. If anything bowlers should be charged for the offense because the bowlers are giving away the extras and delaying the time not the captain!! Crazy rule.

  • Haleos on June 19, 2012, 17:41 GMT

@Talal gous - there is serious competition from some younger players for that spot. They try to beat all time test match slowness in ODIs.

  • short_cover on June 19, 2012, 17:09 GMT

  • superstar100 on June 19, 2012, 17:07 GMT

  • cooldxve on June 19, 2012, 16:54 GMT

This is a bad news for Pakistan because Misbah is the only batsman in Pakistan's thin batting line-up who can play under pressure. But let's hope that Younis Khan will be able to take this spot in absence of Misbah. I think he should be made captain (at least in this Test).

  • getsetgopk on June 19, 2012, 16:52 GMT

SL were behind too but this rule is based on annual assessment rather than on a per series or per match basis, they are keeping track of SL's failings as well and if they exceed a certain limit they will be punished as well, there is no indiference to Pak here. Besides, Misbah had no business playing ODI's

  • guitarboy on June 19, 2012, 16:42 GMT

Good luck Pakistan for the rest of the series...

  • on June 19, 2012, 15:47 GMT

Hafeez is not an international test class batsman and should not be in the side. We should open with a proper pair of specialist openers and drop Hafeez. Younis must Captain Pakistan in this test match.

  • getsetgopk on June 19, 2012, 15:47 GMT

It doesn't get worst than this, we needed Misbah to be dropped for ODI's and not for the Tests the complete opposite has happened here. Bad fielding, bad batting and now this, I guess its true, it pours when it rain! But all the best anyways.

  • SyedAftab on June 19, 2012, 15:38 GMT

  • sheequ on June 19, 2012, 15:24 GMT

As far as i rememeber there was vilation of over rate from Sri lanka team as well. They were about 20 min over in finishisng there overs. Right? if so, no decision to penalize them ?

  • on June 19, 2012, 15:14 GMT

As stated yesterday it was all de complaining and "advice' Afridi had for each bowler before every delivery . Afridi should be made to pay all his team mate fines. Let him captain the test team and see how badly they do. He thinks too highly of himself and truth is he can only bowl in asia and his batting is hit miss miss miss and misses again.

  • Sports4Youth on June 19, 2012, 14:20 GMT

Given the situation, any guesses who will be the temporary man in charge for the first test ? . I think it could be Younis Khan, Unless the team think tank decides to give Hafeez a try. In any case they are doing a lot of stupid experiments.

  • khurramsch on June 19, 2012, 14:19 GMT

was expected as it was 2nd within few months. No good for pak as in tests when younas is no in form misbah will be very important. And good test captain. Hafez is not doing well after becoming captain and become just a bowler. Hope misbahs replacement faisal or asad or ayub do well.

  • am5786 on June 19, 2012, 14:18 GMT

I was thinking otherwise when following the commentary here at Cricinfo, this is what was posted after Pakistan finish their innings, "6.20pm We are 20 minutes over time. Some work for Chris Broad there. And we have seen authorities have got stricter and stricter with time." Pakistanis were batting how come they were charged for slow over rate. I am just thinking now Mr. Hafeez is confirmed to play and will lead the team, seriously Hafeez needs rest he is totally out of touch, his place in the team can be as an off spinner (only in ODIs and T20s).

  • on June 19, 2012, 14:16 GMT

Misbah is a good Test batsman and his absence will be costly for Pakistan. As far as his captaincy is concerned he is not a good leader in any format of the game because he has a very defencive mindset. He should announce his retirement from T20 and ODI cricket and PCB should look for aggressive and brave captains for all the formats of the game.

  • on June 19, 2012, 14:14 GMT

Its all becoz of HAFEEZ. Misbah is a great Captain and Test player. well what's done is done. Mohammed Ayub should be his replacement and Taufeeq Umar/ Younis Khan should be Captain. Hafeez dosent have the skill to be a Test Captain.

  • Nasir_Mahmood_Malik on June 19, 2012, 14:11 GMT

One way of looking at it positively be to offer a test cap to someone added in the camp due to domestic performance and see what he has got.

  • on June 19, 2012, 14:08 GMT

  • on June 19, 2012, 14:03 GMT

Big trouble for Pakistan. Who will lead in place of Misbah, though? Afridi has retired from Tests, doubt PCB would let Younis captain, which probably means Hafeez will be forced to lead. This will be a huge test for him as captain, as he has not been in form of late.

Thats very bad news for all pakistani's becoz he is great test player as well as captain... Now see captaincy of Professor Hafeez who has no place in this test team...Best of Luck Team Pakistan...

Good news for Pakistan cricket! He should be banned for ODIs -not for test.....

Big trouble for Pakistan. Who will lead in place of Misbah, though? Afridi has retired from Tests, doubt PCB would let Younis captain, which probably means Hafeez will be forced to lead. This will be a huge test for him as captain, as he has not been in form of late.

A match late ban! Would have been better if this was done after the fourth ODI!
