It was the first meeting between the two sides.
Umpires, Darrell Hair and David Orchard were officiating in their
62nd and 77th match respectively.
Naimur Rahman was captaining Bangladesh for the first time in a
ODI. He became fifth player to captain Bangladesh in ODIs after
Aminul Islam (16), Akram Khan (15), Gazi Ashraf (7) and Minhajul
Abedin (2) to do so.
Naimur Rahman's innings of 48 is the second highest by a
Bangladeshi on captaincy debut. The record is in the name of Akram
Khan who made 70 against India at Mohali on 14-05-1998.
Bangladesh's total (232 for 8) is its fifth highest in all ODIs
after 257 for five against Zimbabwe at Dhaka on 25-03-1999, 257 also
against Zimbabwe at Nairobi Gymkhana on 11-10-1997, 249 for six
against India at Dhaka on 30 & 31-05-2000 and 237 for four against
Kenya at Hyderabad on 17-05-1998.
The first over of England innings bowled by Hasibul Hussain
consisted of 13 deliveries-six no-balls and a wide.
The second wicket stand of 175 runs between Alec Stewart and skipper
Nasser Hussain is the highest for this wicket against Bangladesh by any
side. This obliterates the previous record stand of 123 between Saeed Anwar
and Rameez Raja for Pakistan at Colombo SSC on 16-07-1997.
The partnership is also the highest for second wicket by any side
on Kenyan soil. The previous record stand was of 150 runs between
Zimbabweans Grant Flower and Gavin Rennie against Kenya on 19-10-1997.
Stewart has now made fifty plus scores in his last five consecutive
matches starting from 74* (v West Indies at Chester-le-Street on 15-07-00),
101 (v Zimbabwe at Birmingham on 18-07-00), 100* (v West Indies at
Nottingham on 20-07-00), 97 (v Zimbabwe at Lord's on
22-07-00) and now 87*. Stewart also became third Englishman after
Geoff Boycott and Graham Gooch to score fifties in five consecutive
innings. The alltime record is on the name of Pakistan's Javed
Miandad who scored fifties in nine consecutive innings during the year
1997.
Hussain (95*) made ninety for the second time in his career. The
other such occasion was against Australia at Sydney on 17-01-1999 when
he made 93. Overall it was 23rd score in ninety for England.
Stewart won his ninth Man of the Match award. He has now moved ahead of
David Gower and Ian Botham and equalled Graeme Hick's tally
of awards. Now only Alan Lamb (13) and Graham Gooch (11) have won
more awards for England.
