A round 100 from Dominic Thornely helped New South Wales overcome a moderate start on the first day of their top-of-the-table Pura Cup match at the WACA. The Blues eventually reached 305, and WA - who led NSW in the the table by just two points before the match started - reduced the deficit by 38 runs without loss before the close.
Phil Jaques and Matthew Phelps put on 81 for the second wicket before Phelps then edged Ben Edmondson to Adam Voges at second slip for 40. Jaques reached 50 before falling to a superb catch by the wicketkeeper Ryan Campbell (3 for 103).
Two run-outs then threatened to derail the innings, as NSW slipped to 5 for 154 shortly before tea. Ed Cowan attempted an unlikely single and was stranded for 12, before the skipper Brad Haddin (1) fell over trying to return from an aborted run.
But Thornely dug in, sharing handy stands with James Packman, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark and Stuart MacGill, all of whom reached double figures. The bottom five almost doubled the total, as NSW eventually made 305. Thornely was ninth out for exactly 100, which included 11 fours and two sixes, from 142 balls.
Justin Langer and Chris Rogers survived nine overs before stumps, collecting 38 runs in the process.
