†AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND 1986-87

At Adelaide, January 26

15-Apr-1988
At Adelaide, January 26. Australia won by 33 runs. England paid the price for presumptuous strokes by Broad and Gatting when they could not stem the subsequent collapse and lost a game they should have won with ease - a chuck that was to imperil their chances of reaching the finals. Australia, who won the toss, had done well to recover from a hostile opening spell by DeFreitas, with Border and Waugh (120 balls) adding 164 for the fourth wicket, a World Series Cup record. Border (122 balls) had lives at 29, Dilley misjudging a skyer, and at 51, when Botham missed the stumps front-on from six yards. These lapses should have been inconsequential, because England were 125 for two after 31 overs. However, two careless strokes, followed by the running out of Lamb by Marsh with a direct hit from twenty yards, gave Australia control.
Man of the Match: S. R. Waugh. Attendance: 24,664.
