At Sydney, December 8, 2004 (day/night). Australia won by 17 runs. Toss: Australia.
Cairns and Mills maintained New Zealand's interest until the 48th over, but Australia squared
the series. Australia were in control after another explosive Gilchrist half-century, which at one
stage included eight fours and a six from three overs. But they again relaxed and lost five wickets
for 21. Lehmann and Hogg led the rescue with a 74-run stand, and New Zealand needed a record
chase on the ground to secure the series. The middle order folded after a promising start. Cairns
heaved 50 from 40 balls, and Mills walloped four sixes to bring the asking-rate to a run a ball
with six overs remaining. Harris, who tore a rotator cuff while fielding, walked out at No. 11 with
the target 26. His hope of a courageous upset in his 250th one-day international was ended by
McGrath.
Man of the Match: G. B. Hogg. Attendance: 28,484.
