AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN 1983-84

At Brisbane, November 25, 26, 27, 28, 29. Drawn. The weather was gloomy throughout the match, with many interruptions for rain and no play being possible after lunch on the fourth day, by when Australia seemed sure to win, Pakistan in their second innings being still 271 runs behind.

Zaheer, still captaining Pakistan in Imran's continued absence, decided to bat on a pitch which had a green tinge to it, but his batsmen made no better a fist of playing Australia's fast bowlers than they had in Perth. They were bowled out just before the end of a first day which saw three interruptions that restricted play by 125 minutes. Eight wickets fell to edged catches. The best of the bowling came from Lawson, who was helped by the tight control of his opening partner, Hogg, who did not have much luck, although he did capture his 100th Test wicket.

On the second day, Australia's early batsmen all made a start, but none went on to a big score, and even then the bowlers, particularly Rashid, were unlucky in that they several times beat the bat without result. On the third day Chappell, who had been badly dropped when 47 at second slip off Azeem, and Border took complete control. Chappell made his 23rd Test century and Border his tenth. Together they put on 171 in 219 minutes for the fifth wicket, equalling the record for that wicket in matches between the two countries.

Hughes's declaration left Pakistan with 70 minutes' batting on the third evening in dull light, but Mohsin and Mudassar scored 42 good runs before play was ended twenty minutes early. It began 45 minutes late the next day, and in 55 minutes before lunch Pakistan lost their opening pair and also Miandad before rain set in during the interval. Heavy rain on the last day left the ground almost under water. Lawson was Man of the Match, while the attendance was 25,627.
