Before a world-record crowd for a limited-overs international, Richards hit a brilliant 106 off 96 balls in 116 minutes with one 6 and thirteen 4s. His timing and superb placements played havoc with the Australian attack and field settings. Set an objective of just over 5 an over, Australia had a sound start from Wessels and Ritchie with 62 in 80 minutes, but, save for Hughes, they rarely looked capable of coming to grips with the task. Hughes's 71 came from 73 balls in 85 minutes yet included only three boundaries, an indication of the vastness of the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
