Australia v West Indies, 2012-13

Wisden's review of the first ODI, Australia vs West Indies, 2012-13

15-Apr-2014
At Perth, February 1, 2013 (day/night). Australia won by nine wickets. Toss: West Indies. One-day international debuts: J. P. Faulkner; J. O. Holder.
Quite simply, Sammy pulled the wrong rein by deciding to bat first. In recent seasons Perth had developed a reputation as a batsman's graveyard, particularly when a favourable breeze accompanied a lively pitch. Australia duly packed their line-up with pace, including three left-arm quicks for the first time in any format, and Starc was the spectacular beneficiary of a stiff north-easterly, which helped him swing the ball back into the right-handers at will in a spell of four for one in eight balls; he finished with a one-day best five for 20. Few had imagined there would be a lower score during the home summer than Australia's 74 against Sri Lanka at Brisbane in January, but West Indies obliged with their third-lowest one-day international total, after 54 at Cape Town in 2003-04, and 61 at Chittagong in 2011-12. Clarke kicked the dying dog by promoting Maxwell, whose haywire 35- ball assault ended the contest after a total of just 199 deliveries.
Man of the Match: M. A. Starc.
