The New Zealanders put in a dominating display ahead of next week's second Test at Headingley against Leicestershire at Grace Road. After Gareth Hopkins added another 31 runs in his 71 to boost New Zealand's first innings to 413, Chris Cairns and Daniel Vettori took four wickets each as Leicestershire were all out for 210.
The New Zealand tail added a further 87 runs to their overnight score of 326 for 7. Hopkins and Vettori extended their partnership to 53 before Vettori was caught by Tom New off Charlie Dagnall for 31 (344 for 8). Hopkins eventually went for 71, caught at first slip by Darren Robinson off David Brignull (392 for 9), but a late cameo innings from Kyle Mills took New Zealand past 400 before Darren Maddy bowled Chris Martin for 2 to wrap up the innings. Mills cracked seven fours to finish on 42 not out off 46 balls. The Leicester bowlers shared the wickets, with David Masters and Dagnall taking three each.
John Maunders then played a lone hand in Leicestershire's innings, which never really got going. Martin struck first for New Zealand, trapping opener Robinson on the crease for 13 in the first of five lbw dismissals in the innings (39 for 1). Cairns picked up Darren Stevens (61 for 2) and Vettori then trapped Maddy (106 for 3) and John Sadler leg before (146 for 4). Martin came back to remove Jeremy Snape in the same fashion (151 for 5) as the batsmen continually shuffled across their stumps.
Cairns and Vettori combined well, an ominous sign for England in the next Test, with Vettori bowling New (198 for 7), and Cairns doing the same to Dakin (198 for 8). Vettori then quickly removed Dagnall, caught by the substitute fielder for 2 (201 for 9) and Masters fell, caught by Scott Styris off Cairns, for 9, wrapping up the innings for 210.
At the close of play, New Zealand were 13 without loss, with Michael Papps not out on 12, and Stephen Fleming on 1.
