Western Province Boland have named Shukri Conrad as their new head coach for the 2005-06 season. He has signed a two-year contract with an option for a further year depending on the success of the team.
Conrad's career includes coaching Gauteng B from 1999-2001, the Highland Strikers for two years and the Lions in 2004. He has also spent time as a TV commentator.
Conrad told iol.co.za: "I view my position as head coach for Western Province Boland as an honour and privilege. I look forward to the challenge and taking cricket in the Western Cape to new heights."
Dr Peter Cyster, chairman of Western Cape Cricket added: "We are delighted on the appointment of Shukri as coach of the Western Cape Cricket franchise team. We have every confidence that he will take [the organisation] to another level".
Conrad replaces Peter Kirsten who did not have his contract renewed, after WP-Boland underperformed during the 2004-05 season, when they finished bottom of the Standard Bank one-day league and second to bottom in the Pro20. However, they did manage third place in the Supersport series, only narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
