ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA

Amiss and Fletcher, with a daring second-wicket partnership of 125 in eighty-six minutes, swept England to a comfortable victory with 5.5 overs to spare

15-Apr-1973
Amiss and Fletcher, with a daring second-wicket partnership of 125 in eighty-six minutes, swept England to a comfortable victory with 5.5 overs to spare. Amiss, a surprise choice to open the innings with Boycott on the ground where he recorded a pair in the 1968 Test match, sparkled in a knock of 103. His runs came in two hours, forty minutes, off 47 overs, and most of his nine 4's were hit through the off side field. He and Fletcher were together for 27 overs only while putting the result beyond doubt with some audacious strokeplay. The Essex batsman was in no way overshadowed, but Amiss was an automatic choice as Man of the Match.
The Australians were in a relaxed mood, Lillee bowling off a short run. They let slip a powerful position for by lunch they had reached 133 for three off 32 overs, the Chappells and Stackpole having scored freely. Then steady swing bowling by Woolmer enabled England to regain a grip on the match. Of the later Australian batsmen Edwards alone was successful. He reached his fifty in 22 overs but was poorly supported. Attendance 11,000. Receipts £9,660.
