ENGLAND v AUSTRALIA 1980

At The Oval, August 20

15-Apr-1981
At The Oval, August 20. England won by 23 runs. Their victory was more easily achieved than the score may suggest. Having been put in by Chappell, England were given a fine start by Boycott and Gooch, who put on 108 for the first wicket. With Athey, in his first international match, maintaining the momentum, only some good closing overs by Lillee and Pascoe kept England from passing 250 in their 55 overs. Australia, in reply, were soon in trouble, their opening pair going cheaply and Hendrick, a late replacement for Dilley, who had contracted glandular fever, reducing them to 75 for five. Only Hughes and Marsh showed any batting form for Australia. Hendrick"s five for 31 earned him the Man of the Match award. The attendance was 13,500 with receipts of £61,000.
