England v Australia 2001

At Bristol, June 10

15-Apr-2002
At Bristol, June 10. Australia won by five wickets. Toss: England. International debut: O. A. Shah.
Another enforced change almost produced an exceptional England victory. Owais Shah, given his chance when Vaughan withdrew with a bruised finger, combined with the recalled Ben Hollioake to lift England to their highest total of the competition, and Australia needed all their expertise in pacing an innings to overhaul it with three balls to spare. Shah and Hollioake added a crucial 70 after Trescothick and Knight had provided a good foundation through solid half-centuries. Once again, though, Ponting delivered for Australia, this time completing a magnificent century, with two sixes and nine fours in 116 balls. As the game reached its climax, Harvey, on his county ground, eased the pressure with the day's 12th six - over extra cover off Hollioake - to leave Australia needing five from the final over. Steve Waugh, predictably, hit the winnings runs. England's seventh successive defeat equalled their worst one-day sequence.
Man of the Match: R. T. Ponting.
