England v Australia, 2012

Wisden's review of the fourth ODI, England v Australia, 2012

Richard Hobson
15-Apr-2012
At Chester-le-Street, July 7. England won by eight wickets. Toss: England.
Australia's woes continued, with Lee and Watson, two of their most experienced players, pulling up injured with calf strains during an emphatic loss that guaranteed England a seventh successive home series victory. Cook put Australia in on a seam-friendly morning, and his bowlers teased batsmen ill-used to the jagging ball. Survival proved challenging enough: Australia mustered only 15 runs in their first ten overs, and were six down by the time they reached 100 from the last ball of the 33rd. Finn, bowling with pace and hostility, twice found himself on a hat-trick, with Kieswetter's fine catch from an inside edge to remove Wade a highlight. Bopara backed up the specialist bowlers when Patel's spin proved ineffective. Hussey drew upon his time in county cricket to negotiate the movement off the seam, finishing with 70 from 73 balls, and Lee hit out profitably until becoming the 500th victim of Anderson's international career (only Ian Botham, with 528, had taken more for England). In what became his last game for Australia, Lee could not add to his own tally of 718. McKay's control made life awkward for England, but Cook and Bell saw out the early overs, and the techniques of England's top three were an object lesson for the demoralised Australians.
Man of the Match: S. T. Finn.
